I think the proper term would be "energon efficient", and yeah, the origins have largely been left unexplained. Though I've heard some unoffical sources say that the Maximals and Predacons were the result of a combination of Pretender and Micromaster technologies.


I think I'd generally regard the eighth issue of DW's MTMTE, and the Transformers Ultimate Guide as official sources - as I recall, they both pretty much beat the reader over the head with the 'implication' of the connection.

I'm sad that the Predacons are somewhat lagging behind the Maximals, when the Predacons are clearly the superior faction. We have by far the coolest alt list of all 4 factions. The Maximals only have 3 or 4 major threats to their credit (and I'm not stroking your egos. You know who you are.) Whereas the Predacons have Spidey, Sil, Bun Bun, Carnosaur, Loremaster, and myself, amoung others. Give in to the animal nature that dwells in your heart. The coming darkness compells you. Ask yourself, which would you rather look like a Pony Princess, or a Klingon Bird of Prey? The answer is simple. Go Predacon in Version 2.
