Okay so after a little digging around the minibots are indeed from the microchange line but they are done in the choroQ style of cars that takara first created years previously (their trademark being super deformed vehicles with little pull back motors).

I always thought they were like a sort of lame disguise mode, trying to imitate a plant.

It's not half as bad as Mach kick's "Protect Mode". The one on the lower right.

That's more of a "we need these guys to do something else aside from forming the big guy" mode. So I'm guessing that was the gimmick of the BW Neo line then, all of them have this weird third mode

As Magmatron, but a maximal, here is the info from the wiki:

For Beast Machines, Magmatron was brought over in a box that reflected his Japanese origin, with Japanese text and other elements from the Beast Wars Neo packaging added. He was slightly changed from his original release, with his missiles and sword "rounded off" to better conform with United States safety laws and has a less "glossy" sheen. He was available as an exclusive to Target stores. His bio card describes him as a Maximal, and also places him on Vehicon-dominated Cybertron. However, his separate beast modes still retain their Predacon spark crystals.

I don't know, but I always wondered why a supposed Maximal had Predacon spark crystals when I was 10. Then I learned who he really was. As it stands, I have Dinobots Magmatron and Universe Nemesis Prime standing next to each other, behind my BW Megs and Primal. Both were assigned to the opposite faction, both bear their original faction marks. There's something karmic about that.

So which one stands on which side? Is Nemesis with the Maximals or Predacons?
