Barrelbrain is a brilliant tactician. When Mindmaster needs advice when and where to deploy troops, Barrelbrain is his right-hand man at that moment. Despite his high seat in the Company hierarchy, he has a rather serious problem: although he tries his hardest to stay away, if he is in the vicinity of a battle, even if it is a minor skirmish, he will suddenly turn from the one of most intelligent Decepticons you will ever meet into a delirious, unstoppable killing machine. It is only after there is nothing left to kill does Barrelbrain snap out of his stupor. This unfortunate personality error is a side effect of a life-saving event unintentionally caused by his previous allies, the Autobots.
Despite being bred for war, the younger Barrelbrain was one of the most beloved commanders in the Autobot military. Although he seemed to be a harsh and uncharismatic leader, in the inside he was was the epitome of the Autobot cause. He unquestionably loved his troops, and likewise his troops loved him. It wasn't until the accident that he began to be despised: attempting to save one of his soldiers from a collapsing building in the midst of battle, a beam had crushed his head. Medics at a nearby field hospital had saved him and reconstructed his head, but with the side effect of the animalistic portion of his mind taking over when a battle is sensed. Deemed unfit for both military service and civilian life by the Autobot hierarchy, Barrelbrain was put into stasis, crated and was prepared to be shipped to an uncharted portion of the galaxy where he would never be found...
...that is, until the ship transporting him was attacked by a ship belonging to the East Cybertron Trading Company. Mindmaster, who commanded the vessel, had heard that a powerful former ally of the Autobots was aboard the ship, and was delighted to find a hulking, heavily armed Autobot warrior in stasis. Reactivating the Autobot, and using his shrewd persuasive abilities to his advantage, Mindmaster convinced Barrelbrain that the Autobots, despite his excellent military career, had always wanted to get rid of him because they felt that he was undisciplined. Spark-broken, Barrelbrain sadly pledged allegiance to the Decepticons and the Company as an act of revenge against his former Autobot friends.
