After the Great War, several Decepticons were granted amnesty, among the few was Soundstrike. He turned down the amnesty, favoring loyalty to his father, Mindmaster, than being spared of imprisonment or execution. Traveling throughout the galaxy, Soundstrike accompanied his aging father and his hulking bodyguard, Chromeclaw. It wasn't until 200 years post-Great War that tragedy had struck...
While avoiding potential hostile forces, Mindmaster, Soundstrike, and Chromeclaw were suddenly attacked by an Autobot strike team who had been on their trail for years. Mindmaster, who was fatally wounded, transferred his super intelligence to Soundstrike as a last-ditch effort. While purging his databanks of intelligence, his morality component, long overshadowed by his cold spark programming, had finally taken root. Mindmaster realized his role in the Great War was misguided, and was immediately hit with a wave of guilt for the atrocities he had committed in Megatron's name.
Mindmaster, in his dying breath, officially renounced his Decepticon heritage and embraced the Autobot ideology of freedom and justice. Before dying, he pleaded that Soundstrike do the same so that he may live for a prosperous future. Soundstrike, now carrying the super-intelligence that his father once carried, was horrified and indignant at his father's last words, believing him to have gone senile. With Mindmaster's death, the East Cybertron Trading Company had fallen.
When Mindmaster had died, Chromeclaw left on a self-imposed exile for the failure of protecting his master. Soundstrike, knowing that the Autobots and their descendants, the Maximals, were now on to him, decided that he must cover his trail and take on a new body and name. Rebuilding himself and naming his new form Chromeclaw in memory of the enigmatic bodyguard who had remained loyal to his father for all those years, the Predacon passed himself off as a Maximal military strategist. In the meantime, he forged strong bonds with the Predacon criminal, Megatron, who had disappeared after stealing a ship and heading off to the stars using only some "Golden Disk" as a navigation tool.
Some years had passed before Megatron had returned to Cybertron, in a repulsive, but powerful, form. Megatron began preaching that organic material is an abomination, and gained a great following, one of which was Chromeclaw. When Megatron told Chromeclaw the time-displaced journey, Chromeclaw, who had been brooding in solitary for a way to pay back the Autobots for killing his father, had finally found his answer: he would travel back in time and eliminate the Autobot threat that had killed Mindmaster.
