Posted by Bounti76 Mar 4, 2023 at 9:23pm CST 105,276 views
Thanks to Seibertronian Dominus Prime, we have our first video review of the upcoming not-yet-officially-revealed Commander Class Armada Optimus Prime! The video review comes to us from Chefatron, and he shows off several comparison shots with the original Armada Optimus Prime, as well as several other versions of more recently released Optimus figures. Other still shots below show off the figure with previous Commander Class figures Jetfire and Motormaster (in his combined form as Menasor. He looks like a good solid, chunky figure.

Now, onto the review!

So what do you all think? Are you looking forward to this figure even more now? Still not a big fan? Let us know your thoughts on the Energon Pub forums!

Not really a fan of Armada Prime. So it looks like I'll be saving over $90 this time out...

G1 and starting with TF:Prime are the TV media that I watched while "On Air." I only started catching up with the Unicorn Trilogy in the last 2~3 months (still watching Cybertron). So no nostaligia for any UT figures. I can count on one hand bot designs I like in Armada, and I can tell you OP is NOT one of them.

However, this figure looks very good & fun and worthy of a Commander. It's one I'll likely get with a pre-order... which is a first for a Commander class/price toy. I'm impressed.

Which one? Armada Prime?
That will be the next normal released Commander. So, available everywhere.

I wasn't gonna pick this up, but this review is tempting me.

Also, what are the chances of getting a Nemesis Prime out of this? Either a commander version or a voyager version with the cab only?

They didn't make the symbol on the side of the trailer "Autobot-shaped" so they may have left themselves open for a possible Nemesis Prime.

I don't get it. We know Hasbro can do better figures than this. Every mode looks terrible.

Assuming you're talking about Prime, then I must respectfully disagree. This looks like a perfect update to the now 21 year old toy. I think they nailed it, and its unlikely at the moment, but I'd love a Jetfire at least to go with him.

Kinda crazy when the legs are better on the original super mode :/ The shoulders have lost their shape too. Definitely needs better faction symbols on the trailer too but at least that is an easy fix.

Will be interesting to see the comparisons to the third party MP at some point.

Wait… what? How are immovable panels better than articulated legs?
The shoulders are the correct shape,

He looks pretty good. The only disappointment is his size.

The legs/hips should be wider/jutting out at the sides of the front skirting (no side skirts) which old toys legs are. The lower legs should have gun turrets.

Shoulders sloped sections should protrude more and noticable shape difference, so not even close to correct shape.

The silohettes wouldnt match up with the animation for sure and that's with out the other details. I'm also not keen how the leg treads end up on the back of the newer figure but they kinda disapear on the toon version anyways rather than staying on the legs star convoy style.

You meant just for the appearance of cherry picked elements. That's hardly what I could call "better." All I see on the original are not legs, but a box split in two. That's why as soon as I got Jetfire, those trailer pants were removed and never used ever again.

At least for the newer Legacy version, the legs look like legs and function like legs.

Granted, the missing gun turrets could be annoying for some, but I'm 100% sure some upcoming 3P upgrade kit will fix that. As for the rest of the little details, better go with that 3P "masterpiece" version. But for the majority of people, that Commander blow the original out of the freaking planet.

Technically RiD Optimus got me back into collecting but it was ended and the shelves were full of Armada. But I enjoyed the kids cartoon and their version of Prime a lot. I still have my original Armada Prime, Jetfire and Red Alert, but I may well get this guy. What a fantastic (and interesting) update to a fairly unique version of Prime.

All this talk about Armada Prime got me watching some old reviews, and I just noticed that G2 Smokescreen and Energon Starscream transform exactly the same way! And while G2 Smokescreen doesn't quite resemble any specific real life plane, Energon Starscream is quite clearly based off an F-22.

Which is also Machine Wars Megatron's alt mode! He doesn't transform the same way, as he was a flipformer, but most of his parts en up in the same place. the same applies to Machine Wars Skywarp/Thundercracker, although they transform into a different plane, a Dassault Rafale.

G2 Smokescreen, Machine Wars Megatron and Machine Wars Skywarp were repainted into Beast Wars 2 Starscream, Thrust and Dirge respectively.

The point of this ramble is that if they ever re do Energon Starscream, we could get a new G2 Smokescreen, Machine Wars Megatron and Megaplex, and Beast Wars 2 Starscream and Thrust just with redecoing and a couple of new heads. And with some alt mode remolding, we could also get Machine Wars Skywarp and Thundercracker, and Beast Wars 2 Dirge.

Come on Hasbro, it's a whooping NINE figures just by tweaking a single mode a bit. I'm sure that at least G2 Dreadwing & Smokescreen and Energon Starscream, could sell well, lol. Can't be sure about all the repaints, I'd be interested in them but they're sort of niche. But they're also cool planes with simple yet attractive decos, and probably deluxe size, depending on how big Energon Starscream should be. And you can say they're JAPANESE characters. They'd also be good fodder for "worlds collide" style packs. And Beast Wars 2 BB & Starscream have that wish fullfilment factor, since they basically use the same deco as that barely released Megatron and Starscream G2 set.

They could even do Botcon Waspinator if they wanted, since he was a repaint of Machine Wars Skywarp!

That may be a bit too much for the current Hasbro team as they've mellowed out so to speak when it comes to easy redecos/retools. I will give you Energon Starscream with G2 Smokescreen as the alternate head... as the unreleased G2 Starscream:

Machine Wars Megatron/Megaplex is already an easy redeco for Prime Universe Dreadwing using the BotCon release as a base, so they can get away with that

I'd be okay with only getting that, that whole wall of text is wishful thinking: I'd be surprised if they even did any single one of those characters in the first place. But pointless speculation is half the fun here!

The Energon Starscream mold was pretty much mush by 2009 with its use for BotCon 2009 Leozack and Skyquake. That mold has long since degradated by now, 19 years later.

And it's not just Energon Starscream that reused G2 Smokescreen's transformation. 2010 Terradive reused it with a few extra steps, and Generations Fall of Cybertron Starscream used it too.
