If that's meant to be a G1 Megatron, why does it look like he has wheels on his legs?

The purpose to be more like a new take on G1. They use similar looks, but newer styles, if that answers your question :MAXIMAL:

... y'know... I'm expecting a ton of people to say this, and I don't mean to sound like some genwunner and say "This is how he should have looked in the movies"
... but goddammit, I wish this is how he looked in the movies. It's such a cool design; it adds realism to the base idea and concept while adding a lot of new and streamlined elements without deviating too far from it. You can look at it and easily see Optimus Prime but also feel something very new and different about it.

Reminds me of when Don Figueroa did his own take on a Movie-style design for G1 Optimus:

Too G1 for me. We got enough G1 Optimuses, I'd like something a little different. Was hoping for something more like the original concept art, a more even mix of Movie and G1.

Okay I have a question. This design is awesome and all that, but who keeps buying these? They keep releasing them, and their over $1,000 usually right? Who is their market exactly?

I have to weigh in on this.. I know I will be getting allot of push back, but I have to say it..

I am so sick of these super high quality Statues coming out. I mean if Hot Toys Movie Masterpiece lines have taught us anything, it is that you can have statue quality looks, and still have playability and pose ability all in one, without the need for a high priced "breakable" statue. I mean, Resin is not a suitable alternative to straight plastic, as Resin can crumble and deteriorate over time, much more so then a good quality plastic..

Now don't get me wrong, I love the look and the design, and I do agree partly with some that the Movie Transformers live action could have looked like this, but Then again, the Bayformers Optimus Prime has grown on me, along with the fact that Peter Cullen was the voice, and to me, if Peter puts his name and talent to it, then it's Optimus For me..

Anyhow, I would rather have this as a full formed, plastic and diecast action figure with LED.. then pay for a static, or even if it was a poseable statue..who needs a Statue when you have Masterpiece Transformers, or some really cool action figures of them like the Ex Gokin, or the Pat Lee inspired and Dream Wave looking Ori Toy Optimus Prime.. Examples below:

IMG_9924a.jpg

and this is Definitely a Dream Wave version of Optimus, which I will get because the materials and the style will go great as a display in front of my Dream Wave Comic collection..

c3a87939-ea8a-43a0-8ebd-1c86ce86c4d2.jpg

512YpEFQr4L.jpg

I know, I know, the Revoltech is much more in line with the Pat Lee works..
2.jpg

but I really hope they make this guy at least the scale of MP-10.. smaller like the Gokin figures would suck..

However, what gives me hope for the Gokin Optimus is that we could be seeing a cartoon accurate Megs like this below coming.. and I will want them both for display with my Transformers DVD collection..

TB2o0vUgFX6009959.jpg

Image

But as far as another "Statue" goes.. No.. I don't want that.. Boring.. and With Kids, or pets.. too much money for something that will just take up space and is easily broken..

I would question this one in particular... Sure it's kinda cool looking. Like the guy on the previous page said, it would be pretty awesome if this is what the Bay movies gave us for an updated Prime. Or even if this was a transforming figure, I could see major appeal in it. But as it is, a thousand dollar statue of a design that really has no place... Other than having more money and space than you know what to do with...why would someone buy this?

I really do not know. I cannot afford these nor really have the inclination to, but who knows. Maye the high cost is because it is built in small numbers for a select few

Waste of Money IMHPOV why buy that when for the money you can get Masterpieces, or even the Wei Jiang Oversized MPP10? That figure is so much better.. but a super high end stylized Optimus Prime....?? Nah.. Pass.. Prime 1 Studios would do better to release their ultra detailed and high end sculpted figures in a Hot Toys 1/6 (12 Inch) action figures with LED light up features in Plastic and Diecast.. I would buy this with a price point of 200.00.

Or the same with their bayformers line.. But as is..

Not worth the cost. even if you're a Prime fan like myself, this is just excess, and not really worth it. I can only see this fetching a value below asking price in the future.. it's just not a figure that appeals to a large variety of masses. they could get more from their talents if they made a higher production run, with a smaller scale and full articulation.

There is a reason Hot Toys figures are so successful..

Nope, don't like it. I don't get how these companies can do amazingly true-to-the-movies versions of the Transformers, but when they do G1 they go as far outside the box as possible rather than give us the iconic versions. If I'm going to spend $1000 on an Optimus Prime statue (which I would never do anyway) it had better look like he stepped out of the G1 cartoon, not Gundam. Same goes for Hot Toys, when I first heard they were doing an Optimus Prime my first reaction was great, their movie figures are amazing screen accurate, this'll be perfect, I might even buy one. Then it was revealed, and while basically an over detailed MP-01 it was OK, but then they had to ruin it by driving the price up with needless Starscream armor.

At least the EX Gokin line had the right idea, as does the upcoming (way over priced) Soap Studio sofubi stuff, but I just don't understand why the higher end stuff has to keep going off the rails. Surely there's more money to be made in making iconic versions over unique designs.

Where's this design in the live action movies? Complex and realistic, yet still very familiar.

I agree about the comments regarding the "high end statues" that are very fragile. Not sure who they appeal to really. I only know one friend who collects these expensive Transformers display pieces.

I was turned off by statues 15 years ago when Hard Hero sent me a couple of the Optimus Prime statue busts they did. They sent me two, if I recall correctly. One for a contest prize on Seibertron.com, and then an artist proof for myself to say "thanks for promoting them". It was the first time a company had ever sent me a "sample" of something. Unfortunately, my excitement turned to disappointment when one of the antenna snapped off while removing the bust from the package. That was the first and only time that I have ever handled a statue collectible. I'd rather take my chances with GPS.

That's the first time I've ever seen a G1 Optimus Prime and thought he actually looks pretty cool and not just a bunch of red and blue boxes. Maybe Hasbro can take some cues from this for the next time they do a transformable G1 Prime figure cos it blows all their previous attempts at a cool G1 Prime robot mode away.

IIRC the Hard Hero statues were cold-cast porcelain, which is notoriously fragile. Most statues are made of PVC or something similar, which is far more substantial.

Agreed.. Tho, I don't mind a bit of stylization, however a true accurate plastic and diecast action figure of Optimus prime that is close to the G-1 TV show as possible is something I want, in addition to the MP-10 Hasbro Ver. I have, and the MPP10 Wei Jiang Oversized MP-10 KO I own (and Love!!) and that to me would be also acceptable.

However, as far as Gundam goes.. I would love to see an Alternative G-1 reality set after Victory (which should get a Hasbro release of the figure with a Dubbed DVD of the first season with if possible G-1 Actors Like Frank Welker and Peter Cullen and the rest who were in the Transformers Devestation Game.. now that would be awesome.. and if they release Star Saber stateside, they should do a minor repaint, with GOLD CHROME on all the yellow spots and the Chest. Like His knees would be nice.. etc..

But, on the Gundam side.. I would want a Prime unless of course he is a GUNDAM and also a TRANSFORMER.. I would love absolutely love a series with a DVD as well showing Gundam universe collides with the Transformers, and gives us a cool Japanese Anime done by Bandai in conjunction with Takara Tomy's License.. and produces a Gundam Transformers line of Model kits like this custom:

Image
Image
Image

I'd buy that! they could do a story where humans and Autobots combine their technology with their gundam programs and the autobots themselves become merged with the Mecha suits and become a powerful battle machine to thwart the Decepticons invading the Space Colonies and the earth united space federation.. or what ever.. that I would buy just for the fun of building a cool Transformer Gundam.. Two of my fav things!
Transformers Meets gundam would be an awesome treat!

Totally with you there. I was like, whoa, he looks cool, I can stand him off to the side in a separate display in another room, or on a DVD shelf if I like.. then the price point hits because of stupid upgrade additions.. and It ultimately for a non-engineered transformable figure of that price point.. Nope.. Pass.. but I did love the actual Bot tho, they did a really good job.. but not worth the price.

Emerje wrote:At least the EX Gokin line had the right idea, as does the upcoming (way over priced) Soap Studio sofubi stuff
I think that Ex Gokin figure is okay.. I haven't purchased it yet because for the price, it is way too small, and the head sculpt I am not a fan of what so ever, and in addition the chest seems way too small it should be a bit larger to give him a correct proportion, the anime wasn't the greatest, but there is a difference between 3D figures and 2D animation. My Greatest wish would be to see Wei Jiang do an upscaled KO of the Ex Gokin figure in metallic paints, but light like the colors of the anime, with some metallic flek in the paint.. which wouldn't be too bad, and a bit darker blues.. and make the scale of the Oversized KO since the Ex Gokin figures are Voyager sized, make the Optimus KO MP-10 scale, and also able to hold the MP-10 Matrix for added Fun. See my digibash below:

Image

Image

It would also be nice to see a KO upscaled Megatron to go with that Prime.. I would love a high quality animation faithful figure with articulation and diecast.. that would be good, with a limited run of characters.. just the popular ones..

But this should be done as well..

there could be a market tho very small for one of those statue pieces I suppose. I can see comic shops buying it, or a fan club, or even maybe a movie museum or fancy store or Movie themed restaurant.. but for me, I think honestly what is surprising is that this figure feels like a super upscaled detailed version of this prime, which I can find for a fraction of the cost and still have that same aesthetic feel, and posability and play are high with no stress over my bank account, and more left for my continuing hunt for Masterpiece Transformers.. Buying that statue would set my collecting back and whole 6 months.. and who knows what I will miss having to wait, or the price discounts because of such a stupid investment, when I could buy a figure very much like it, and still get that same feel, just smaller and less fragile..

To Me, this statue...
Image\

Reminds me of this...

Image

I'd rather buy that.. Infact, I may do so now after seeing that statue, I have a better appreciation for that prime figure, and Normally I would pass, but this guy is sweet.. and less expensive and more fun!

However, If Hot Toys ever did the movie bayformers in that Prime-1 Studios quality, and that new Prime in a 1/6 scale around 200.00 each, I would buy them all!!! Especially if they do them like the Ironman figures with diecast and plastic and LEDs!! As for the statue.. No..

This figure, based on the Instagram commentary, seems to be part of their Generation 1 statues despite looking very movie-esque with the head. He also comes with Laserbeak. Check out the teaser below and let us know what you think in the comments section.

Not to mention he's standing where Soundwave's canon is supposed to be so that's already a strike against what's sure to be a colossal disappointment.

This thing is beautiful. It feels like a blend of AOE Optimus and G1, with the aesthetic strengths of both. But I wish it had a bit more detail, because the movie designs to me were the best at capturing the "car-to-robot" look.

Seibertronians, we have some more news out of SDCC for you, as always provided by Seibertron himself. This one comes from the Sideshow Collectibles booth, who have made quite a few Transformers busts and High-quality statues in the past, Ranging from the Bayverse into G1. The Prime1 Studios Optimus was a particular show-stopper this year, and if you'd like to take a look, Seibertron has you covered with a whole gallery and a video! Check this statue out in all its glory down below!

Super interested in this figure? It's available now through Sideshow's website for a Prime-sized price tag.

Will you buy it? What do you think of the almost G1-Fall of Cybertron mashup design? Leave your thoughts in the comments!

Seibertronians, we have some literal big news tonight. Just after we premiered the new gallery for Prime1 Studio's G1-inspired Optimus Prime statue, it appears Sideshow and Prime1 are at it again. They've unveiled two completely new statues, one of the Decepticon leader himself, G1 Megatron, and one of everyone's favorite Munky not Trukk, Beast Wars Optimus Primal (seems like a familiar insect tagged along as well-and met an unfortunate end). We've obtained some images of both, along with Optimus and Nemesis Prime, although unfortunately, Primal's still in his Gray-scale prototype phase, but fear not! Megatron's viewable in all his colored glory! Check 'em out below!

But the movies aren't G1. Why is every other non-G1 Megatron allowed by the fans to have their own unique and original designs but not Movie Megatron? Or any of the Movie characters?

Well...

The movie was very obviously intentionally aimed at fans of G1 - notice that before the movies, every other iteration of Transformers featured entirely different settings and beyond Optimus, Megatron and Starscream a very different cast of characters. Only Energon broke this trend and even then it was mostly just references in the designs due to the anniversary. The movie went full-out G1 with it's Autobot cast - hence Ratchet, Jazz, Ironhide, Bumblebee - and was a blockbuster movie aimed at cashing in on 80s fans' nostalgia. So it's only natural that said fans would want the designs to be more reminiscent of G1 more than any other series, especially given there were a lot more viewers to this than the likes of RiD and Cybertron.

Seemed more to me like it was aimed at mainstream action popcorn movie audiences unfamiliar with Transformers than anyone else.

Kurona wrote:notice that before the movies, every other iteration of Transformers featured entirely different settings
"Present-day Earth" was the main setting from 2001 to 2005, with "out in space" as a secondary setting during that time, and both of which the movies all take place in as well.

Kurona wrote:The movie went full-out G1 with it's Autobot cast - hence Ratchet, Jazz, Ironhide, Bumblebee
With Jazz being the only one of those four who bore any physical resemblance to his G1 counterpart, and not even in his color scheme.

Not to mention how three of those four were barely even in the movie at all.

Let's not beat around the bush here. The real reason is cuz a lot of G1 fans wanted and still want live-action G1 movies instead of live-action non-G1 movies. They want what they grew up with to be done and be seen in a real life live-action format (nothing wrong with that) and won't accept anything new or different from that (therein lies the problem).

It was most certainly aimed at general action movie audiences, yes; but we're not tackling yet - we're tackling what the Transformers part was aimed at. Because if it was just a generic action movie, you could call it anything. You could make it anything. You could just make another Die Hard movie or Bay could just make another one of his terrible movies based on real life disasters. But why was it Transformers in particular? Who are they aiming at?
Well, considering the age rating, the events of the movie and the sexualization, I'm going to assume it's not Hasbro's usual target audience. That usual target audience being, of course, kids who do not need G1 references thrown at them to buy a product. All they need is something they find cool thrown at them to buy a product. I sure as heck didn't get Energon Ultra Magnus as a kid because I thought it was a great reference to G1 Ultra Magnus in name and colour scheme, I bought it because oh my god my Armada Optimus can have massive shoulder cannons.
And most G1 fans don't really care about those new Transformers franchises that happened since they were a kid, or don't even know they exist. Some did, obviously. We're on a website full of them, but that's a very small and niche amount of people. Transformers (2007) was made as a Transformers movie rather than a generic action movie to target and cash in on a large audience who as children 30 years ago were captivated by a world-wide phenomenon. I don't like to put arguments as objective fact, but there is no debating that. You can't possibly argue that it was targeted at any other facet of the Transformers fandom.
So, if it's aimed at those fans... it's pretty natural that a lot of them would come away thinking "you know I really wish that guy calling himself Megatron actually looked like the Megatron I saw as a kid".

Admittedly, my use of the term 'setting' was a bit too broad and inaccurate. When I said it I meant more the themes and subject of the show. Armada focused on collecting mini-cons, Cybertron focused on saving the entire galaxy from a black hole, etc. The point is that they all went for something a little different than being G1-based in story.

Yeah, Jazz is the only recognisable one of the bunch. I just said they were going for a G1 cast, not that they did it particularly well.

In any case, this discussion is likely best not to take place here as it's a completely different subject. Don't want a repeat of that whole Masterpiece Energon scenario...

Because when you do movies you go back to the source, to what made the franchise popular in the first place, and go from there.

Spider-Man got to look like Spider-Man.

Batman like Batman.

Superman like Superman.

And Megatron looked like a blob of metal parts with zero resemblance to the iconic character. He didn't even have his arm cannon, it's the least the the designers could have done.

Kurona -- also, they paid millions to the original voice-actor of Optimus Prime. They could have tagged a famous movie-star instead.

IMO this Prime 1 Studio got the right mix of on-model details and new "realistic" details. (for a live-action movie.)

By 2007, there were lots of sources to choose from. All those other examples you listed didn't have to keep drastically reinventing the looks of those characters every year or two to keep things fresh over the years to sell more toys. But Transformers had to do that because what made Transformers popular in the first place also nearly killed Transformers too.

Yes, I'm sure all these other obscure TF cartoons and toys up to 2007 were just as well-known and iconic as the originals. And that it's totally a coincidence that Hasbro is still basing its toys on "G1."

And these other franchises did change in the comics...

.. but the movie makers knew how to pick the iconic looks for them.

They were to every kid who grew up with them as much as G1 was to every kid who grew up with it, yes.

Every 1 to 2 years, though?

Less kids, I'm sure.

Earlier than that, I think. But that's already ten years. Companies tend to go back to the original once the "flavour of the month" dries up. Even "G2" was the "G1" toys with weird decos and some new figures that could have been released in the original line.

I don't know how many years apart. But they change enough to have a selection; and the movie-makers usually pick the iconic looks. Bay's Megatron wasn't close.

Even in the 2007 animated series they made sure to make Megatron instantly recognisable..

Nope, they didn't go with an iconic Batman costume for any of the movies. The iconic comic Batman costume is blue/black cowl, cape, gloves, trunks, and boots on a gray spandex body suit and yellow utility belt, but every movie from '89 to present have clad him in the drastically different all black body armor from head to toe. They've since become the expectation for the movies, but they have only the barest essentials like the ears in common with the original source. Remove the ears and the Batman logo from the chest and the '89 movie costume would not have been recognizable as Batman at the time.

Was there ever a "Batman" film where Batman didn't look like Batman?

-- where someone looked at him and said.. wait, is that supposed to be... Batman...?

Never happened. Batman is instantly recognisable in all of them. They took his attributes and ran with it.

And Megatron?

If you go back, I didn't say that they should have used the original model for film; but something like the Prime 1 Studio sculptures. They stuck the perfect balance imo.

That Primal is GORGEOUS. Too bad it'll probably cost a zillion dollars.

In other words, just another manifestation of the "TRUKK NOT MUNKY" mentality.

I will grant that the movie designs are ugly, but this has nothing to do with whether or not they resemble G1. The aesthetic is just horrible in and of itself.

And look how well that did. It lasted a whole TWO YEARS before Beast Wars had to "ruin" the franchise back to viability, and if that hadn't happened there would BE no Transformers today.

And then there was Machine Wars. How did that go over, exactly?
