Mensa's Bracket Challenge 2012 Champion: Transformers

Posted by El Duque Apr 10, 2013 at 7:16pm CDT 25,510 views
Remember Mensa's bracket challenge that was going on toward the end of 2012? Our beloved Cybertronians fought their way past several challenging opponents, which included My Little Pony, G.I. Joe, and Lego to face the timeless classic, the ball, in the final round. The results were posted earlier this year and it turns out we won!

Over the last six weeks, both the public and American Mensa members from around the country cast nearly 78,000 votes on 64 toys in four regions — timeless, pre-1950s, 1950-1980 and 1981-present. Each region was made up of 16 competitors, seeded 1 through 16, based on the strength of their résumés.

In the first round, the top seed from a given category faced off against the 16th seed from the same region; the second seed challenged the 15th seed, and so on. During the sixth week, the winner was chosen by you, the members...but which was it?

Transformers
1980-Present - Seed 4

The boys' version of the Cabbage Patch Kids, Transformers set the toy world on its ear in 1984. Anyone and everyone just had to have these "robots in disguise." They could transform into everyday objects, usually vehicles or weapons, and a cartoon series and, eventually, films followed, turning a whole new generation on to these toys.

Wow, the final results took their sweet little time to come in!

Of course, the toughest opponent was LEGO.
However, that final round was kind of underwhelming. Sure, the ball is timeless, but it's more like an everyday object. Like a fork or a spade.
So, Transformers just won.

And I'm very glad!

Yeah, Lego deserved to be the closest call.

And here we were worried the poll would be spammed by Bronies; those numbers seem to imply that word never even made it into their circles. Or maybe most of them just care about the cartoon more than the toys, IDK.

Even Bronies are smart enough to know which brand has the better toys. It's more the fiction that gets their attention (and even that varies to significant degree). ;)

I'm a brony myself and let me tell you, most bronies consider the official toys as shit. Especially if in the bracket, ALL pony is considered. Meaning the most magority made of the older gens, the part we dont care about.

Soooooo, Transformers all the way because even the oldest gens are awesome.

More like we spammed the poll. :p

I dunno, as much as I love Transformers, I still think Lego deserved to win. I mean, you can build a Transformer out of Lego, what does that say? The possibilities of Lego are endless.

But, as a TF fan, yay! :APPLAUSE:

Yeah, but a Lego Transformer still looks like a Lego robot, and it can’t transform very well, if at all.

True you can build anything with Legos (little blocks and some nicely molded pieces), but Transformers are fascinating as 3d puzzles, visually exciting, dynamic as toys or statues, and fully interactive in two different modes. With Legos you can do a greater variety of things with them. But with Transformers they excel in their particular aspect, that being fighting robots and alt modes.

YES!!!!!!!

Well done Transformers! You have shown that you have been able to destroy th handheld, RC cars (no offence, ROTF Wheelie), Lego, the classical ball, the Joes and the Ponies & Bronies!!!!!

After I post this, I'll smile at all of my Transformers toys for 30 years of success! But remember one thing: if any other toyline trys to destroy you, tell TakaraTomy & Hasbro to light our darkest hour.

'Til all are one!
