I think it's hilarious. I thought last years set was fully retarted, but after I accepted how rediculous it was I fell in love with it.

Same thing with this years set.

Yeah, we get the joke but there's no joke here. Drag Strip is a fembot. Apparently a very angry one according to the tweets. I was pretty resistant to this years idea, until this reveal. She turned it around for me, at least for the box set. I'm not feeling the ridiculous here. Jus' sayin'.
Last year though, as soon as I realized it was just more figures to thrown into my Classics display, I fell for em.

Honestly, I don't think this is such a bad idea. Now, don't get me wrong, I love G1 just as much as any other guy. Especially Drag Strip considering it's the only Stunticon (in any incarnation) that I've ever had.... But, honestly, I always thought that one of the G1 combiners should've had a female former on their squad... Particularly the Decepticons. I'm not too broken up about this.

I love it! To me it's now the only interesting one in an otherwise boring ass repaint party.

Hope it is so unpopular that i can get it for cheap. It's awesome.

A little surprised at the 50/50 mix here. From other boards, much more of an 80/20, maybe even a 90/10 in favor...

Gauging just the reaction online, this will be our most popular set yet, at least on the same level as 2007.

A female Drag Strip in the Animated Universe made perfect sense and a huge thanks to all the Seibertronians that get that ;)

Looking forward to the last two reveals!

Well, I actually like this repaint, and I am happy I guessed correctly.
But, it's not as if wasn't the first time Drag Strip looked too feminine.
http://tfwiki.net/w2/images2/8/86/Universe2008_DragStrip.jpg
See, they even made a girl (Fracture) out of that mold, so there's where they got the inspiration of using Arcee as a template, and I'm happy it turned out that way.

...And the name was kind of "spoilerific". (Drag Strip, come on, YOU saw that coming).

Starting with the 2008 set, each individual exclusive has been a hit or miss for me, the sets as a whole have been a miss. I know the sets sell out every year, but I feel like some better choices could be made (and let's be honest -- they're only selling out because of the limited numbers and that people are buying extra sets to resell on eBay -- I wouldn't use the fact that a limited exclusive sells out as a metric for success especially when there are many collectors out there like me who simply buy every single Transformer that is released). I understand that you guys are intentionally going out of your way to avoid the 2007 fiasco, but I think you guys have gone too far the other way now where I feel like you are frustrating some (notice I said some, not all) die-hard and big money collectors like myself.

I think turning Drag Strip into a female was an unfortunate and poorly thought out decision. The name Drag Strip could have been applied to the molds used for Breakdown or Dead End and no one would have said a word and this whole discussion wouldn't be happening. But applying the name Drag Strip or Wildrider to a female mold implies many tongue-in-cheek thoughts/comments that are not appropriate for a family based convention.

I hope you guys will take things like this into consideration in the future.

If this box set was Classics/Generations Stunticons the I would order it in a hearbeat.

My wallet is breathing a big sigh of relief that it's only animated.

Postby Son of Primus » Fri Feb 11, 2011 12:50 am

Personally I don't care that Drag Strip is now a female character in the BotCon Animated universe, I just find the whole Animated thing to be a pass. It had some decent figures and some great homages and characters, but was just something I could never get into. The only animated figure I own is Arcee and that's because with a replacement head she fit right into my Neo G1 collection.

Now don't get me wrong, I think there have been some fabulous Animated figures, but it's just not my cup of tea. With that said, this is the only BotCon set I will be passing on fully, as it has no where to go in my collection. It looks interesting enough and for people who are fans of that toylike and style I think (and hope) they will enjoy it.

But Animated to me seems like an interesting way to go for an exclusive set, for me I wouldn't think there would be enough "collector demand" for it. I could be completely wrong, but logic would dictate that the majority of collectors who are a member of the Transformers collectors club would be adults and therefor more interested in the "G1 Universe" than in one from a recently canceled show aimed towards today's children. Again, not to say there are not adult Animated collectors out there, but to me it just seems like an odd way to go.

I really, really want this set - but I can't afford it. Dragstrip is particually cool.

If rather the female was Drag[/i]strip than [b]Wildrider.

However - if I do get one of the jobs I've just applied for, I'll be trying to get a full set of Animated figures, and these will definately be a must in the collection.

Dude... C'mon... You KNOW that's not why they decided to pick Drag Strip as a female. Drag Strip is, simply, the most nimble. I mean, my mind is just as far in the gutter as anyone else's and I didn't even consider the name implications until someone brought it up in the forum.

Honestly, if I could just send some money with someone who is going to BotCon I'd totally buy this set. Putting a female in the mix, for once, makes me like it that much more. I mean, I bought the movieverse Arcee Sisters and those were.... Sub-par at best. At least I know that all of these are decent sets.

You have some good points there Ryan, but here are a few things to consider. 1. This isn't a mass market release, it's a convention exclusive. Which means that the people buying it are old enough to go buy alcohol. The 'tongue-in-cheek thoughts/comments' were already happeneing long before this convention set was even announced. It's all in the eye of the beholder, if your mind is in the gutter, you're gonna make the comment. If it's not, then you won't. That doesn't mean that Has/Tak needs to thing harder about what molds they use based on the names and if an adult collector is gonna be like, 'Heh, heh...'

That said, I think the animated Dragstrip looks horrible. The coloring clashes, at least to my eyes. And yes I have the Dragstrip exclusive from Hasbro. It also looks like Headmaster decided to pop a squat on a fembot's body and attach himself...

Our position. She was very thought out and we did take the name in to consideration. But please don't blame us because people are being playfully "childish" with the harping on the name.

Kids will no more make that connection than they will with names like "Blowpipe" and so on. I know for one that I did not make the connection with "Erector" when I was younger, and heck, I was a teen at the time!

With all due respect, for anyone concerned about the family oriented nature of the show, stop making the jokes. But last time I checked, in cartoons aimed at kids, toys aimed at kids, video games aimed at kids, there are sexual innuendo's put in there that only adults get. THAT said, this was NOT even intended that way. Drag Strip was the best choice to be made in to a female looking at the toy options and character options. We also know that this "joke" will have a very short shelf life, especially once her characterization is revealed.

So yes, Drag Strip. Ha Ha. Its funny. Okay, now lets move on to the fact that she was very inspired, will be an awesome female character and will look great on any Animated fans shelf!

Oh, I know we would not get 100%, even among those who LOVE Animated, and honestly, the set reaction is exceeding expectations... I am just surprised that the reaction is more 50/50 here. Maybe there are more hardcore G1 peeps here. Skewing it a bit. Of course that is a whole nother topic, as I grew up with G1 and have (almost) always embraced the new takes on the brand/characters i.e. BW, BM, RID, Animated to name those at the top for me

Gauging just the reaction online, this will be our most popular set yet, at least on the same level as 2007.

A female Drag Strip in the Animated Universe made perfect sense and a huge thanks to all the Seibertronians that get that ;)

Looking forward to the last two reveals!

I'm more surprised that you're surprised than I am by the fan reactions. You know what your audience is by now and that you can not please us all. As a big fan of both Animated and the club, even I had a negative kneejerk reaction to Animated for Botcon. Drag Strip for me is the turning point. I love the deco and I'm curious to see where the next two reveals take us. One way or another, I'm going and I'll have a great time.

I'm not saying I'm one of those people, but how about a hint as to whether the at-show toys will cater to those collectors a little?
