Box office

So according to the estimates for this weekend Harry Potter will have a 52% dropoff because of Chuck and Larry.

Transformers only had a 48% dropoff in its second weekend.

Also Potter is up to 207 million after 13 days(once sunday is over) while transformers was at 224 after its 13th day.

So what was it that people were saying about Harry Potter kicking Transformers ass at the theaters?

Oh and for those that still want to complain Transformers is up to almost 400 mill internationally. They've made there money back twice over and you still want to say its a failure?

Give me 400 mill and I'll let you call me a failure anytime you want.

Keep in mind that some of that money goes back to the theaters, so not all of that is profit. I recall the profit numbers being something like 60% of the domestic take + 40% of the international take, though I'm not entirely positive.

According to BoxOfficeMojo-

Transformers: In Release: 20 days / 2.9 weeks

TOTAL LIFETIME GROSSES
Domestic: $262,969,000 64.2%
+ Foreign: $146,657,283 35.8%
-------------------------------------------------------------
= Worldwide: $409,626,283

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix:
In Release: 12 days / 1.7 weeks

Domestic: $207,541,000 37.1%
+ Foreign: $351,300,000 62.9%
-------------------------------------------------------------= Worldwide: $558,841,000

Transformers didn't get the international launch that Harry Potter did so the UK and Japan numbers aren't in yet, but based on the numbers available now, unless it manages to make 200 million cumulative in the UK and Japan... and, keep in mind that the last Harry Potter book launched this weekend, so many of the hardcore fans spent the weekend reading that instead...

I don't think anyone's calling Transformers a financial failure, are they? That'd be like calling Norbit a financial failure.

Norbit
Production Budget: $60 million
Domestic: $95,360,247 60.1%
+ Foreign: $63,298,761 39.9%
-------------------------------------------------------------= Worldwide: $158,659,008

And everyone knows how hilariously awesome Norbit was.

It depends on how much of the take is generated during the first few weeks, as domestically it's set-up so that the percentage that the theater makes per ticket depends on how long the film's been out. With big-budget films like Transformers the theater usually keeps less than 10% (or, in many cases, less than 5%) opening week. They rely on concession sales (which is why your sodas and popcorn cost $4) and on the people who come in near the end of a run in order to stay in business.

I was just pointing out to some people that based on the same amount of time in theaters (13 days)that the movie has actually done better than harry potter and had less of a drop off at the box office than the wizard did.

The real test will be how Simspons may affect it and once the international markets are all open and we see the grand totals.

To my knowledge working in the movie theaters for a couple years the main source of income is in concessions. Ticket sales go directly to the box office. I would think if the theaters got a percentage of the ticket sales that their concessions wouldn't be so expensive. At least that was always the take I was given on it for years. Can anyone confirm where this may be true or false?

On the note of the percent drop I think Transformers has way more replay value than HP5 right now. I thought that film was the worst of the HP films honestly. The story was good and it was well told, but I just didn't care as much as I did the previous films and that's where I think it failed on a seeing it again and again kind of thing. Transformers I could see a bunch of times in theaters. I've only had time to see it 3 times right now, but I love it every time. I will be going back for more!

According to the local Drive-In that I frequent, it's true that they make their money on the concessions. Tickets generally go directly to the movies themselves. And that's how it is for the entire industry.

Which does suck.

Ah well, even if a percentage of ticket money goes to the theatre, both films would be affected, so who cares.

It damn well better should have!!!
Christ, the advertising blitz, the money they must've paid to have "Transformers" show up in every aspect of one's life, multiple times!
I go into work... people are drinking Pepsi with autobot and decepticon symbols on them... the skater kid is wearing a new shirt he got at Hot Topic with a logo on it, the newspaper ads have images in the electronics sections, the classic rock station's playing a commercial with a bimbo asking if her new car has "energon cannons" while a guy asks if it runs on "allspark cube" energy. Go home, there's banner ads running on nearly every website I'm browsing.

Know what's sad? I know I'm not even remembering all of it.
So yeah, after all the advertising money... it'd have been nearly impossible to crash too bad in North America.

Potter? No idea what the advertising budget is, but I only get about 1 unavoidable collision with the fact the movie's in theaters a day.

The real test will be how Simspons may affect it and once the international markets are all open and we see the grand totals.

It's not going to be doing Potter kind of damage overseas.
Americans may have been duped by media manipulation, but the rest of the world sees "look what those weird americans did to it lol".

Keep in mind too, the United States military is not all that popular at the moment with the rest of the world.
Flag-wavers here might be getting squirts of patriotic enemas, but abroad... hardly. Who wants to see a damn "Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines!" commercial if you're not from the USA?

Simpsons?
Yeah, I can't imagine they'll do that good, coming close to Potter or Transformers, overseas OR domestic.

Good thing its not a military commercial or a recruitment video. 200 mill overseas seems to think that people are watching it not for the military, but for the big metallic things that this website likes to call "Transformers"

Yeah, who went to go see the musical? You know you want to see John Travolta dance in drag. Well, some people did, apparently.

Actually, the next big day is this Friday when the film is released in UK or Wednesday in France, Germany on 2nd August or 6th in Japan. The DVD is nothing until these MAJOR regions open and provide another $200million odd to the box office total.

I dont think any film that triples it's budget can be called a failure.
Transformers will make over US$500 million, seeing as it still has Western Europe to open in. The Simpsons Movie will cut a huge scythe through the UK opening though.

It'll blow both Transformers and Harry Potter out of the water.
Awesomesauce; Use it, you know you want to.
