I've been a long time message board rper, but I've always been best with my own created characters, I'm too afraid to tackle a character that already has a story for fear of messing it up (a lot).
That's a common reason that a lot of people avoid canons. But I would encourage you to keep them in mind, they are quite fun
That said, you could certainly apply for a fanmade (ie, your own) character also. You just have to be more mindful of limitations with those.
You're more than welcome to join us when and if you feel the itch
I am still working my way through The Convergence (I have read through the other active threads), I really do like the way things run around here. Too many times I've seen things ruined because someone comes in and goes into god mode and spoils everyone's fun. It makes it all the more tempting (as I like strict games so no one gets trampled).
I came to the conclusion this morning when I had [absolutely] no distractions (the power went out :/ ) that I could probably handle [my beloved]Soundwave for a cannon character, but I would never dare on that one, since its a major character. But I will keep considering things (I also briefly considered Shrapnel, which is funny coming from me since I hated him in the G1 cartoon, but in FOC he grew on me).
Once I finish reading, the paranoia in me fears I will miss something important if I don't read everything.

Sid would really enjoy if someone picked up Shrapnel. It seems the Insecticons are one of the least favorite of the players and sadly looked down upon in the story by the other Cons. As for Soundwave, you would be correct in your assumption that he is a bit too important for a new player to have especially with at least one current application out there by a more seasoned player which has yet to be approved.

I would certainly not discourage Shrapnel hahah.
But yes, even after you've worked through an app, got approved and everything else, it will still take a little bit to feel comfortable. It did for me when I first came back and I had played here beforeThere's plenty of us here who will help where and how we can. The fact that you're doing so much reading of the pre-existing material will help quite a bit on its own. It's not required, but it's very handy when players do it.

Don't forget the other side of the coin if you do decide to join. There are loads of characters in Red who are fresh and capable of being developed to a player's liking.

Megadeath is a crazed, insane, and brilliant Decepticon scientist with a penchant for mass homicide. In all other respects, a welcome soldier in the Decepticon ranks if only he had not committed treason. Now the DJD hunt their quarry with a delight rarely seen but often spoken of in hushed, frightened whispers of the Con ranks. Having dealt with Megadeath's subordinates, the five justice's attention now refocus on their primary quarry.

Unfortunately, there's 30 years of love for 'Cons in my heart. (I do have a secret crush on Ultra Magnas though. Don't tell anyone... I don't want you to have to 'disappear'). Besides, Foxfire has been working on me all day today

Totally understandable... Everyone has their preferences to be sure. For the most part, at least from my perspective, many of the cons are incredibly similar in terms of personality. There are differences of course but few offer the diversity and challenges of the Autobots. While I am not saying choose one side permanently over the other, I do advocate delving into both factions. One character you might fun would be Brawn. Others would include Bumblebee (a true challenge as he is an iconic character), Gears and Cliffjumper. Different characters with vastly different personalities. But they are personalities that can be easily tapped into for those who are uncomfortable in playing Canon characters.
Decepticons are looking to fill their seeker ranks, though admittedly I am unaware of which ones are presently in need of filling. At present I am hoping to land my lone Decepticon Big Fish in Thunderwing... so I am definitely in the market to get people to grab some Pretenders. Mayhem Attack Squadron is but a small part in a much grander scheme, but even still, Thunderwing will treat his advanced guard with a grand degree of levity and respect.

ctrlFrequency wrote:Okay, so here's the deal. Someone, who shall remain nameless... has successfully convinced me into throwing myself into writing. And actually it's with a fanmade.
However, there's a few things I'd like to actually discuss regarding the concept. Mainly it's electronic warfare.
The idea behind the character is a Deception escort plane (alt mode of an earth EA 18G Growler) specializing in jamming radar, communications (and possibly if I can work out the points) sonar. I am specifically keeping the range on the jamming small as that's something integral to Soundwave's character (specifically the communication disruption). However, that's not the issue (just something I wanted to point out)
As I was going through The Growler's real life payload, I found a few weapons I think will need to be approved. Specifically 2 types of missiles, one that is anti radar (air to surface), 1 that is air to air, with anti jamming. I also wondered if the jamming pods (of which there are several types) would need to be considered weapons. I would consider them weapons.
As for the missiles The first one is a fire and forget radar guided missile that can switch from active to passive radar once launched and home in on jamming equipment in addition to being a traditional blow ya up missile.
The other is really is a pretty straight up, locks in on a ground radar and blows it to bits.
How would we feel about these types of weapons? I am cool with whatever, just give me some heat seekers and I'm fine. Give me the other two as well and I'm cackling off in the corner plotting.. but you know, I don't' have to![]()
The Growler carries a nice assortment of receivers and transmitters. Which I'm sure they're okay, though I don't think that receivers would be a problem, but the transmitters (jamming pods), as I mentioned, seemed like they should fall under 'weapon'.
If you want I can post the character in the New Characters Registration, right now, as I have it typed out, it is minus all the specifics on the missiles and jamming systems. But I can easily add that in to post if you want me to.
I do get a bit nervous over these things because I don't want to have to redo a character over and over (cause that just gets annoying for the moderators), I'd rather do it right the first time by asking questions first.

All of this when you could just write the app and see what happens.
