I think it has been mentioned that the movie Transformers are biomechanical. Not organic. They are just composed of billions of self-replicating nanites just as we are composed of billions of self-replicating organic nanites: cells.

How does a TF repair itself if damaged, especially if that damage involves missing material? Let's say a TF gets cut, blasted, whatever, and material gets removed from it as a result.

Let's the TF is like us, and heals by having its nanites make many more nanites at the site of injury, thus eventually healing the injury. With material missing and extra material and energy needed to heal an injury, wouldn't it be logical that the TF has to obtain that material from somewhere? Wouldn't the TF have to eat in a sense, at least when its injured? Wouldn't the TF have to consume whatever materials his or her nanites are made out of just like we have to consume proteins for our cells to repair themselves and replicate?

Also, if TFs are made out of billions of nanites, do their nanites live forever? Or do their nanites, like ours, have to replace themselves every so often to keep the robotic organism functioning. Every so many months, I think, we replace all of our cells. Are TFs like us in this regard? If so, one would think that in addition to requiring energy, a TF would need a regular supply of nutrients to do this.

I think the answer would be Energon, or a Movieverse version of it (like the AllSpark is essentially the Movieverse Matrix)

TransFormers have been established to have a great lifespan, possibly even immortality. The only reason real known life isn't immortal is because our heart wears out and thus stops the constant regeneration. It's very much possible for TFs to have an everlasting lifespan, thus killing their vital components would be the only way of truly stopping them.

Did you read the rather humorous Shoulder entry on the TFwiki? =D

My comment regarded the Movie universe only. I'm not sure how TF lifespans is established in other continuities, but this is my view on the Movieverse.

With 'vital components' I essentially meant the head (which obviously contains a TFs personality and memory e.g. Frenzy) and the spark which is usually located in the chest area.

(Don't ask me how Frenzy was able to survive decapitation whereas Bonecrusher was not.)

Well, we humans have at least ONE major artery in that vicinity... It is called the brachial artery and it's actually closer to the armpit, but hey, same area.

And while they may not have to consume nutrients in the way we do, they've GOT to have at least SOME form of fuel. You can't generate energy out of nothing. You can't create energy, and you can't destroy it either. All you can do is change what form it's in.
