Hm. Not really digging the G1 Grimlock there. This version of the AoE Grimlock, however, actually looks pretty solid, especially compared to the bigger AoE Grimlock. I feel that the same kinda thing was going on with the voyager and... larger Predaking figures, how the one in the smaller size was better.

I am super, super happy about this. I know I'll be one of the few who say this, but I loved -- LOVED -- the Energon Dinobots, and I had to sell them and it really killed me.
I am unbelievably happy that this set is coming out, and hope like crazy the Swoop set will have Energon Swoop.

You can all let them shelfwarm. That means I'll definately get a set. :lol:

Curious about the Slag; not too happy about the figures that come to mind like the Animated one or that Japanese Beast Wars one.

I know it's "Slug" these days, spare me the pointless correction post.

The Energon line had some excellent figures, but this was not one of them. A poorly proportioned floppy mess further hampered by a poorly executed combiner gimmick that this set will be lacking due to the non-inclusion of the original release's partner figure, rendering an already poor quality toy's main gimmick nerfed.

Bouncy X was probably just talking about the figure's questionable proportion/aesthetics, but even without that it's by all accounters one of the crappier grimlock toys that's been released, and definitely not an exciting one to see paired with movie grimlock when there are vastly superior options (See- FoC Grimlock).

I understand that it's probably the best choice they had to work with in regards to homaging G1 Grimlock, but this is one of those cases where the G1 homage isn't the subject here. For it is the quality of the figure itself, not its G1 accuracy, that's being ridiculed.

I think the main problem is there are, in alot of peoples opinions, better figures that could have been chosen for this. Though I'll admit I wouldn't mind if grimlock can still combine with swoop, because I would find that a bit amusing, not gonna lie. Personally what worries me more is the very real possibility that Slag is a redeco of Animated Snarl. Not that there's anything WRONG with dinobot and beast wars ironhide's illegitimate lovechild, but it doesn't quite fit as a representation of the g1 character, in my own opinion. Though now I'm tempted to get one and recolor him as beast wars ironhide after he realized combining with prowl was terrible and got a non-combiner alt mode.

I have Energon Grimlock and I can say.. Poop. Not the best choice IMHO however it is good for those that do not have him and want to add him to their collections.

Back in early 2005, I hesitated and missed my only chance to buy Energon Grimlock and Swoop at retail, then kicked myself over it for years because I couldn't justify paying secondary market prices for it. So assuming Energon Swoop gets Evolutioned (-ified?) as well, I'm actually very happy to finally get to own the first stab at a combining Dinobot toy in better colors.

And I think we also need a reminder that Mega Dinobot looked slightly better back in the day compared to the first official fictional stab at a Dinobot gestalt, around the same time:

And yeah, rumor has that the ol' Diaclone Dinobot molds are lost/unusable. You wanna' shiny, new, "real" evolution pack that goes back to the beginning, you'll have to ask yourself if those exact-repro knock-offs really do strike you as more hideous in principle than the actual appearance of those Energon molds and the above pic, nice and official though they are.

IMO, they should've run with Classics Grimlock. Heck, Generations: Fall of Cybertron Grimlock probably would've been fine, just give him a slightly more Generation One-ish deco.

No doubt in my mind what they're going to use for the Swoop/Strafe set. Same goes for Bumblebee.

If the Optimus set uses the Classics Voyager, I'm going to build a time machine, go back in time to about eight months ago, and stop myself from buying the same figure for fifty bucks. I could hit two birds with one stone with this set, if each set costs as much as the Classics Optimus I got.

I'm curious as to what they plan to use for the Slag/Slug set. Surely not Animated? :-?

But in general, this "Evolution" mini-line... Starscream (and maybe Megatron) or bust.

Eesh, actually owning this figure, I dunno if it was a good choice. It's the only Grimlock I've ever regretted owning. I guess Classics Grimlock, while not perfect but still good IMO, wasn't what they were looking for? XD

I guess they wanted one that homaged G1 Grimlock better since Classics Grimlock deviates quite a bit from the iconic Grimlock transformation and look.

The options to from were probably Energon, Classics, Animated, Masterpiece (but I doubt it), and Generations Fall of Cybertron. and of those options, they probably wanted a Deluxe, reducing them to just Energon and Classics. And between those two, Energon Grimlock is closer to G1 Grimlock than the Classics toy is, which is a shame since, despite the stronger homage, Energon Grimlock isn't that good a figure.
