Hobby knife. Always makes it much cleaner than when you twist them off the sprues.

This is a good question. Based on my (somewhat limited) modelling experience, I'm going to use small wire cutters to clip the weapons from the sprue, then carefully sand off the plastic nubbins. I'd like to know what other suggestions people might have.

I just twisted them a little and used toenail clippers. Nice and flush against both the inside and out. Absolutely no problems.

Magnusalpha, sanding chromed parts is the last thing you want to do. Seriously.

The chromed weapons are not going to be sanded. The unwanted tiny remnants of plastic from clipping the weapons out of the sprue will be removed, that is all.
