Top 5 Best Shockwave Transformers Toys
Re: Top 5 Best Shockwave Transformers Toys
I think more should have been said about Alternators Shocky. I get that a lot of it might be a repeat for almost all Alternators, but still. Two sentences seems like too little.
IMO, I just can't get behind Energon Shocky and never could. If it were in different colours, then maybe. But the colours, the giant arm, the alt. mode ... I just could never get behind it. It'd be either BH or the FoC version for me.

Honestly, I feel everything above the top 5 is interchangeable with any other Shockwave figure and ranking. They all have as much pros or cons from one another which is why the actual top 5 we are left with are so great. But of course, these were the preferences of the authors. Maybe I should stick to top 5s then, you'd definitely have more than two sentences. And I could pretend the one each person wishes was included would be number 6

Re: Top 5 Best Shockwave Transformers Toys
I'll second what others seem to have said, and express my surprise at my boy BH Shockwave not making the list. Truly one of my favorite figures - that light-piped arm ruled! - but to each their own. Really, I don't see how Cyberverse Shockwave and Purple Whirl can make the list but not him. Many of the others were apples-to-oranges comparisons, like Shockblast or Animated, but Cyberverse and Cloud mostly stand out for their CHUG compatibility. On that front, the SDCC Shockwave's Lab set released him with a gloriously G1 trans-pink chest and trans-yellow eyes. Handily beats Cyberverse for articulation, arguably transformation, and probably aesthetic fit too.
I can't wait for a redeco of Siegewave with more clear plastic and a brighter purple. You know it'll happen eventually.
Silly nitpicking aside, the list was a fun read and I'm glad it was put together. Huge props to Nathaniel Prime and William-James, as always!

I would love to see a redeco of the Siege mold with G1-toy colors like that. For this release, they wouldn't need to release the armor since Hasbro probably knows there is a market for Siege Shockwave without the armor.

I'd love a "voyager edition" of Siege Shockwave. Without "battle damage" and "accurate" cartoon colors. But the irony is that such a release would be some sort of exclusive that would be the same price as the full leader.

I love living in a world where we have enough Shockwaves for a top ten. I kept scrolling waiting to maybe nod in slight disagreement but outside of the MP which I don't own ya totally got me, ya got me right in the Shockwave fanboy soft spot. And you can't call Animated Shockwave's tank mode lazy, not when it can huh-wha-huh?...that's right, turn into another vehicle, yes, four modes in total. I don't care if it's a "crane" and not a crane, dude, that's still four modes....

That and the armor might be gang-molded with him, making it cheaper to release him with it.

I'm glad that you agree with our choices for the list. I'm quite fond of Animated Shockwave, and he totally rocks no matter which version you got. He's one of my holy grail figures for me

No other Transformer has a face changing gimmick like that. At the time that was the coolest gimmick I'd seen and I mean jeez...I mean of all the gimmicks the way it so seamlessly shifts between the two it's just so cool, it's gotta be in my top five gimmicks. Top gimmicks, there's a conversation topic.

This might be a fun one to revisit on the basis of line-wide gimmicks. Titan Masters, Planet Keys, Minicons, Siege effect parts and so on.

Line wide gimmicks could be interesting, especially now that we have 4 lines in recent memory to add to the pile.

I bet the combining gimmick from Combiner Wars would be #1.

It's pretty much a given, considering how many KO's try to have several (unrelated) figures combine in some shape or form. Plus, it's so wide-spread among robot toy lines, and pretty much... generic I think it would be wise to actually exclude it (and make a separate list of which line or figure pulled it off the best).

That's a good point. The gimmick, it's just too good.
So good it could be excluded from a general discussion of gimmicks and their respective awesomeness.
But, then I mean you could say that anything from Minicon powers to Cyber Key weapons are just stuff that flips out. I mean everyone loves a flip out gimmick! ...I mean everyone else loves a flip out gimmick, right?
On the subject of combiners though, you know, there is a pecking order in that gimmick. Devastator? Pshh, one mode. But Scramble City now there was the real combiner innovation with all the limbs able to swap out with each other. I don't think a lot of the third party combiners, any of the hundreds...and hundreds of third party combiners really have that cross gestalt versatility.
Given that, Hasbro, Scramble City style (preferably Combiner Wars of course) wins out in the Combiner gimmick.
I think.
The Silverbolt Torso model I think was the first in the G1 line, and quickly became the standard for Combiner Wars too with how many times it was remolded. Favorite combiner, a very sacred and personal decision we must all make. But best combiner? Definitely not G1 Superion but maybe Combiner Wars Superion. He's the Patriarch of that new update to the style.

I kicked the older gimmick thread back to life too you can also post there.
I think at this point it'd have to evolve into a conversation of not which gimmick is best, but which in the line of said gimmick pulled it off best. I think the selections from 2016 are all great points but hey list any other faves if you have them.
Like, the original Headmasters were pretty cool for what they were, but there was definitely some diversity there before the concept was done with. Pretenders, Cyber Keys, Mini Cons - which individuals really hit their gimmick out of the park for you personally, you know?

Excellent revamp of the old list! And good to see Siege Shockwave in first place- I need to get him at some point. I know lots of people didn't like it but I for one think the power armour looks absolutely great.
Somewhat off-topic, but here's a question- if Shockwave were to have an "Earth" alt mode, what would it be? I for one would probably pick a Type VII U-Boat. Partly because having him turn into an actual submarine would be rather funny given the "It's not an upside-down gun honest!" thing, and partly because it's a really cool, sinister looking thing and it would suit him really well (plus he has a history of nautical alt-modes, see Hearts of Steel).

That sounds like an awesome idea. We need more submarine figures, and Shockwave would be a nice candidate for it.

Well, 3P already did it some years ago, including a pretty bad-ass Shockwave.
Still, I'd REALLY love to see a steampunk Transformers line. Not specifically HoS, but maybe something original. Like the Transformers arrived/awoke on Earth in the late 1800's. Steam cars, trains, blimps, mechanical monstrosities. With a style that would be like the Cybertronians in the Bumblebee Movie.
