I honestly don't know, I'm not an engineer and it's not my job to design these things!
However, I think that a more realistic gun of that size may have been harder to transform into a decent robot (hence why they only really ever got it right with MP Megatorn, as G1 Megatron's robot was poor). They might not have been able to make a decent, articulated robot out of such a small, realistic gun. I don't know.
To be honest, I only really dislike the looks of the gun mode because of the colours. In chrome, or without the green and purple, it would look okay, but that's nothing to do with the design
per se.
I never really liked him being a gun, anyway, though, in truth. What I can say, however, is that Hasbro must have had a reason for doing what they did.
