basically.
its probably the easiest way to explain this game is a pet RPG.

It really comes down to how you define the "pet" rpg game thing. If you are looking at it in terms of code or game play of coding, no. It may have started out as a pet project to keep people interested in the site while the news articles rolled in, but over time the complexity of the game has vast out grown the basic low level sit and wait pet projects you would find say on facebook.
In terms of game play, NV sums it up well. It is a text based game with a few graphics, but it really is no difference from playing a game based on characters with randomized timers and attack strengths.

I think this game has lasted as long as it has because of two reasons:
a.) Transformers and its fan base
b.) Non-pressure game play. You don't have to invest a ton of time to play but can get great returns for a little bit of time. People enjoy things that don't demand $, or excess time invested. Think about how popular Tetris or Sudoku is and it answers why a game like this is so great.

Honestly? No idea. Hasbro don't bother with us as this is non-profit making so is effectively a free advert for their products. Character and team names and alt-modes etc are hidden from non-players though which may keep us below their radar?
Someone here will know more than I do about this sort of thing though.

Plus Hasbro look at the site, and other sites like this, as a publicity outlet.
