It wasn't out of place though. William Hartnells portrayal was like that. They did dial it up a little but by adding in Capaldi's obvious shame and embarrassment they lightened the tone, AND demonstrated how much things have changed over the years.

Even the Second Doctor literally spanked a companion once. Bent her over his knee and everything. So, yeah. His comments weren't a regular thing, but they did happen. And there was a similar scene in The Five Doctors where First orders Teegan to bring them some food and Fifth gets very apologetic. "Fortunately, one mellows with age."

(Though in the case of this regeneration I feel it was the Tardis rejecting the new Doctor)
