I wasn't attempting to ridicule you. If I were attempting to belittle you in any way shape or form I think that I'd do a little bit better than 'get a grip'. It wasn't actually you that I was directing my comments at either, hence why I explicitely stated 'I'm sick of purists'. It's fine that you didn't enjoy the new series, where are you from out of curiosity? I think that if there's any criticism of the new series is that it is overtly a very British show, with the traditional zany British sense of humour that other cultures sometimes don't react to.

OK no problem,I was tired when I read it so I kinda overreacted and in answer to your question I'm British.
It's intresting that you consider the revived Doctor Who very British in how it comes across as I think RTD has largely tried to change this and "Americanise" the show as much as possible with things like the overblown story arcs, obsessive political correctness,1000mph pacing, pointless referencing of other things from popular culture and the whole "style over substance" approach and that more than anything else is why I've gone off it.

As an Australian who was brought up on British shows and later American shows (plus the odd homegrown one) I really don't see much "Americanisation" in the new series. Not if you compare it to the movie from a few years back.

New Who definitely still has that British feel to it. Why? Because Brits easily do sci-fi better than the Americans. :P

Sorry to revive a stagnant thread, but for those who have watched the preview of "The Next Doctor" what is the consensus for the special?

Seeing Tennent and Morrissey together again after their last work together in Viva Blackpool is a bit strange but oh well. The Cybershade seems different but nothing special so far.

And not to harp of bcm77's comment that RTD was Americanizing the show, I really take objection to that statement. You want Americanizing, look at "The Office", "Life on Mars" or the horrors of the US version of "Worst Week" and "Coupling".

What the current production teams have done (face it, RTD had much to do with it, but he couldn't have other the effort of many) is modernize the show. As a Brit living in Canada and getting somewhat of the best and worst of both worlds, there is a lot of difference to what we are given in Doctor Who and the spinoffs than what is spat out during North American Prime Time, and why I find myself watching very little from the network feeds. (NBC,ABC,CBS,FOX,CW,CBC,CTV,Global etal)

A question to ask yourself, if you took away a couple aspects like episode length, (but really a two part now is pretty much an old 4 part serial minus two cliffhangers) advances in technology (which would have been taken advantage of regardless) and changing public opinions (which always effect things regardless) Had the show not taken the prolonged hiatus broken only by "Enery Within" (aka the McGann episode), would the show be that different than what we've been getting recently?

I'm quite looking forward to it, but then again I'm not overly critical like some folks. Has it been confirmed that Morrissey will be the next Doctor, or is this going to be explained away as some sort of alternate universe/time bubble thingy?

I know that Morrissey is one of the odds on for the role but I have doubts that he is actually playing "The Doctor".

I'm not sure if he's a con artist or something but it was clear than "Ten" doesn't recognize him, and he in turn doesn't seem to know "Ten" either. Strange seeing if he was "The Doctor" that which ever one is older doesn't remember the other as "Ten" did with "Five".

I think it's very different from American shows, and that's its charm.

It's certainly British: hopelessly cheesey and low budget and regularly bashes the yanks. :P

I don't see the problem with making references to popular culture. It's hardly family guy.

With the exception of "Worst Week" I didn't like any of the other shows so I have little intrest in seeing the US versions.

Back to Doctor Who one of the other actors that's supposedly in the running to replace David Tennant is Paterson Joseph who previously appeared in series 1 as the character Rodrick in "Bad Wolf/Parting of The Ways".

Whilst I would doubt that such a choice would be made for any other reason than political correctness I wouldn't be against it providing he made the character intresting again and that each episode didn't mention his ethnicity at every possible opportunity like they do with Captain Jack's sexuality.

It won't be anyone previously seen in the show: it'd be too easy.

Other than the fact that he's a really good actor, of course.

Strange that Sympatico is releacing a story that the BBC hasn't, or even Outpost Gallifrey for that.

That would be perfect.

As for the news about Paterson Joseph, I'll hang fire on the news actually being confirmed in other sources before voicing my opinion.

Well the long wait ... wasn't really worth it.

Very mediocre episode riddled with the piss poor writing of RTD combined with a ridiculously predictable second Doctor plot line.

If this is what the next few specials are going to be like, this just backs up my theory RTD is going to do his best to leave the show in a steaming pile of crap and make it hard for anyone following to pick up the pieces.

It was a decent watch, but in the end non as satisfiable as I was hoping for.

Would have made a good mid season episode but for the x-mas special... a bit lacking.
