The Dr Who (and spin-offs) Thread *potential spoilers*

Welcome to the General Discussion area where just about anything goes! This area is designed to discuss all matters and does not necessarily have to be Transformers related. Please keep topics relevant.

I've been watching both shows and reading DW books now and I'm still confused by all this!

What is RTD trying to do, drive us all away?! It's succeeded on all those who haven't been keeping taps on The Doctor since the new series began.

I thought they'd confirmed Ben Kingsley was going to be Davros. What state he would be in is unknown, but I thought the casting was a definate. Or have they withdrawn that statement?

He should be kept in Torchwood, where his dark demented character belongs. He's so much more interesting when allowed to fully explore the human nature. There was very little reason for him to be in the series 3 finale.

But Piper????

That fool was stuck in a parallel universe where no one can get to. It was made explecitly clear that no one can ever cross again or the multi-universe would implode. Hence, the teary farewell. But if she is coming back, then there was no point in that at all.

Now, not being a huge who fan, I'm sure there are others who are gonna be alot more upset over this than me (DB, Burn, you two spring to mind) but come on people, this series is gonna be pure crap! Far too many people in it. Move forwards, not backwards. Get rid of RTD and have Moffat write the entire thing. Only then will we be guaranteed of a proper, well written series.

I'm touched that you would like me to write the next Dr Who season, and a little worried that you know my surname ;;)

Best thing to do is admit that this a tv program based entirey in a fantasy universe. Heck, transformers pay more attention the the fundamental rules of the universe than Dr Who does.

I'm gonna accept it and move on. Not in the least because I like Piper :P

Yeah. They said that Kylie wasn't going to be in "Voyage of the Damned", too. And look how true that ended up becoming.

Anyways, I'm sad to pass along some bad news on the DVD front. There's been a bit of a reshuffling on the release schedule, and now it looks as if "Timelash" is getting a April 1st release.

But wait, you say. That's the day that "Planet of Evil" and "The Time Warrior" are coming out, right? Well...that's only half true now. "Time Warrior" is still coming out that day, but "Planet of Evil" is being moved up to March 4th, taking the place of "Rembrance of the Daleks: Special Edition" and "The Complete Davros Collection", both of which have apparently been kicked to the curb.

http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Doctor ... anges/8554

Now, I know that "Timelash" was the only story released in the UK that hadn't gotten a US release yet, but if this rescheduling had to involve the release of another story, couldn't it have been another one? I mean, I really, really, really wanted that Davros set, and the thought of that waste of tape replacing it is kinda...unsatisfying. (And why am I thinking it's because of some brouahaha Big Finish has raised about a US release of their material?)

None, I'm afraid. Seemingly it's so far only on at UK Cinemas.

Special effects look better than usual, and from the trailer the sinking is due to 3 nasty looking meteors. Also shown is the Titanic re-entering what I presume is Earth's atmosphere.

Ooh! Tiny clip's just appeared as number 8 on the doctor who official site. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/drwho)

Because they (and by that, I mean the cameramen) made a big deal about focusing attention on the life preserver with "RMS Titanic" on it.

If they're referencing what I think they're refderencing then it wasn't meteors that took down the Titanic on her maiden voyage, it was a massive reality failure.

Quite an easy one, so only 10 cool points available for the reference (I'm getting more stingy handing out the cool points since someone admitted to cheating and using the wiki on a previous one of these).

A reality failure caused by an Infinite Improbability Drive creating a double improbability negative. *coughs*

No, it's not the H2G2 Starship Titanic, though it's a good reference.

Haven't watch it yet as it's only just finished downloading and I need my sleep.

But if the figures hold true it looks to be the highest rating DW episode in the last 28 years!

Unofficial figures show that the 2007 Christmas special Voyage of the Damned was watched by 12.2 million viewers, a 50% share of the total television audience. This is the highest rating the show has achieved since its return in 2005.

The programme was the second most watched of the day, being beaten by the edition of EastEnders immediately following Doctor Who.

The audience peaked in the last fifteen minutes of the show with a massive 13.8 million watching, nearly 55% of the audience. The five minute breakdown shows that over 15 million watched the last five minutes of the programme.

The day was a triumph for the BBC, with BBC One taking 9 of the top ten places. Against the Doctor, Emmerdale on ITV1 could only manage 5.8 million, with the Evening News only getting 3.8 million.

The previous highest rated episode of the new series was Rose, which got 10.8 million viewers. If confirmed these figures will make Voyage of the Damned the highest rated episode of Doctor Who in over 28 years. It has the largest audience since the 1979 Tom Baker story City of Death, which had the advantage of being broadcast when ITV was on strike.

In the Children's Charts, Doctor Who was top of the list with 2.2 million under 16's watching, an incredible 65.3% share of the audience.

Final figures, including data for those who recorded the programme and watched it later, will be released by BARB in two weeks time.

I won't give away any spoilers about the show BUT in the "trailer preview" for the upcoming season there is one creature that surprised me (of course I am a bit behind on my new season rumors and such).

From what I read that story involves the Ood's homeworld.

I found this year's special to be a let down from previous years.

I also found it to be lacking even more originality than ever before.

It seemed to be they borrowed elements from Titanic and Poseidon Adventure.

But what I found even more unoriginal were the "Hosts". You could call it a nod towards the Tom Baker "Robots of Death" story, except it's RTD and he seems to be of the attitude he can borrow things from the old series, remake it, and treat it like an original idea.

There were a few moments of laughter, the stand out moment of laughter for me was the Queen's evacuation.

David Tennant was of course, brilliant as always. But he seemed to have been let down (again) by another lack-lustre story from RTD.

I did enjoy it, but not as much as I hoped to. And the previews for the next season didn't excite me as much, not since I saw that promo pic of the new look Sontarans. Probably the only thing to look forward to is the return of The Ood.

That’s funny. I always thought it was “borrow things from the old series, destroy it utterly, then throw it away when its usefulness was over.”

Then tweak it slightly, make out like it's completely new and throw it away again until next series.

I liked the episode. It was a fun, brainless romp and a better ending than I was expecting from RTD since he usually has trouble finishing stories. Don't know about the hosts being a copy since I aint seen Bakers eps, but it was a good ep all round.

And Torchwood series 2 comes to BBC2 in January, according to the voice at the end of the series 1 finale. Thought people would like to know. And Martha was in the promo pic for it. Looking forward to that.
