Basically, The Doctor (4th, Tom Baker) and Leela end up on this big mining vessel. The majority of work is done by robots with the few humans having to do very little work.

Anyhoo, like always, something goes wrong, the humans start dieing and then suddenly they have a full scale robot revolt on their hands thanks to a mysterious controller.

So it parallels VotD very well. Both have robots (who look similar), the robots get out control and start killing humans, and the robots are controlled by a hidden controller.

Well, then it is a big rip off. Still an enjoyable ep though. But there was a really cheesy bit where Tennant was walking through the explosions.

VotD spoilers... I guess...

It was interesting. I was also thinking about "The Robots of Death," and even told my roommate the same. (We had watched that old episode a few months back.) Still, it was entertaining. Funniest moment for me was when everyone beams down to Earth. The Doctor is all worried, only to find that everyone evacuated London because something bad happens every Christmas :) And when one of the Hosts said, "Information: you're all going to die!"

When ya have a series as old as Doctor Who, one is bound to repeat occasionally, knowingly or not. I enjoyed the ep, but it was very echoes of the past, especially after the timecrash "brainyspecs" line. Did you notcie Rose's theme in there as the girl was killing herself? Um... sacrificing I men. Lots of noble suicides. That, I think, was the most disturbing aspect of the episode. It was also backed up by a rule of three! Three noble suicides? That's a bit much. We didn't even really care about the characters.

Everybody would have died if it weren't for the doctor. Everybody on the ship, everybody on the Earth. I could do without a bit of that kind of plot for awhile. I like the little stories.

My favorite bit of a line from the ep, though: "Time King of Ganymede"

I was watching Harry Potter and the goblet of Fire ( an unwanted christmas present) when I noticed David Tennant was in it. The first thing I said was "Doctor, My Doctor.. bad guy?" lol.

I watch too much Doctor Who. lol

Just wondering, did anyone spot what could be the new bad wolf/torchwood/saxon reference in this christmas special? It was pretty obvious in the last 2, but I missed anything that could be it this time.

Well, the new season of Torchwood has begun. I thought it was a good episode, learning more and more about Jack's past. I think he's the only one that can go from snogging to kicking ass to drinking all within five minutes and make it seem... well, believable. I am disappointed that differences in the ending of Season 1 and the Doctor Who series just seemed to be ignored, at least for now. I know there will be blamings on RTD for that major incongruity, but I hope the difference will sort itself out in time. Previews for what's coming look good too. Martha Jones shows up, stuff with nukes, weavels, giant bugs, aliens in denial, that sort of thing.

I liked the last few lines best:
Yanto: It's all over
Owen: Let's all have sex
Yanto: Just when I thought the end of the world couldn't get any worst.

Those last lines were pretty good. This ep was brilliant, thanks to James Masters performance. I hope he returns. All in all, a good kick off to the new series. But when she does turn up, I hope Martha is like she was in her first appearance. You know, good.

Speaking of inconsitancies, didn't the doc take Jack's wristband off him at the end of that ep? Pretty big hole considering how much it was referenced in this ep. Didn't see any other inconsitancies that couldn't be explained. Although you think they would have watched the President making first contact, and thus see Jack get killed (again) by the laser screwdriver. Then wonder what the hell he was doing there?

I have to disagree with you, m'afraid. The show is once again a platform on which Russel T. Davies can act out his fantasies by having Captain Jack snog every man (Why not the bloody fish? Would have been less expected) he comes in contact with. All of it- the plot of multiple bombs, and the laughable opening lines from the theatrical fish-man were cliché and unimaginative. The introduction of 'Oh, I found person X from your past!' followed by random silly 'NOOOOO!' flashbacks was very clumsily done, too.

Can't really name any major incongruities with Dr. Who. Other than fan speculation that the TARDIS landed in Torchwood due to a few bits of paper flying about- it's a blooper, we should live with it - it's no big deal, surely?

Few bits I liked, however. They seem a tad more professional than last time (Better idle chit-chat than the dire 'When was the last time your orgasmed so hard you didn't know where you were?') though sadly, the professionalism probably won't last- it appeared to be there as a contrast to Jack's reappearance.

Sorry of this sounds overly negative. I didn't HATE the episode, it just... well, has most of the same problems as previously. Maybe the watershed version'll be a lot better.

In a related note- as I posted on Outpost Gallifrey, why hasn't anyone suggested the giant bugs are the Wirrn? Seems to be people turning into them, too- or at least, people with the same forearms as the bugs.

Saw the Series 2 premiere tonight, I liked it :) James Marsters is great, but I already knew that from being a big fan of Buffy & Angel. It was like watching Spike on Torchwood, but with a bisexual nature ;)

The major inconsistency that I found was... why does it seem like the TW team were without Jack for months on end, when that entire "year of Saxon" was rolled back? Did Jack hang around with the Doctor and Martha for a while before going back to TW, or maybe he took a vacation?

Everything with The Master was rolled back. The only ones that remember that year happening were those at the centre of the "time storm". Jack, The Doctor, The Master, Mrs Saxon, and the Jones'.

It would be understandable if Jack disappeared for a little while to come to terms with what he witnessed. When Gwen asked him where he was you could see he was struggling so it probably took him a while to come to terms with things.

Or we could simply put it down to poopy writing. Which quite frankly, is what i've come to expect from Torchwood. Only redeeming factor for this episode? James Marsters of course. Everything else was pretty bland.

It only rolled back to the 8.02, when the paradox machine fired up. That happened after teh president was (thankfully) killed and Jack was shot as well.

How long they went without Jack depends when the end of Torchwood was. They missed the election, so that's a couple of days at least. There's no telling what date doc went to to recharge the Tardis, so there's no way to know how long his team went without him. Except they had enough time to go to the himalyas, thus explaining why they didn't see Jack on Cloudbase. Bad tv reception there. :P

Yes, and that year was rolled back. To 8.02am on the morning of 'First Contact'. Which makes me ask this: That year wasn't rewound for those on Cloudbase, so are they all 1 year older now? My bro actually brought this up when the doc said he was 113 in the Christmas ep so he was 112 in the last series. But if he didn't rewind in time, then he was 111 in the last series.

Ah, the questions those who have never watched Who before come up with. :P

The Doc should actually be well over a thousand, seeing how Doc 7 was hinted to be 953 (he also has a 900 year diary).

You've never heard of SJA?

We did discuss it in this thread! Pay attention! :P

But seriously, check it out, it's good clean fun and despite being aimed at young teens I found it really enjoyable.

Classic Series actor passes away.

Kevin Stoney, the acclaimed actor who portrayed two of the greatest villains in the original series of Doctor Who, has died at the age of 86.

Stoney first appeared in Doctor Who as Guardian of the Solar System Mavic Chen, confronting William Hartnell's Doctor in the 1965 story The Daleks' Master Plan.

Three year's later, he returned to battle Patrick Troughton as Tobias Vaughn in the Cyberman epic The Invasion.

Stoney's last contribution to Doctor Who came in 1975, playing the Vogan Tyrum in Revenge of the Cybermen.

The actor was also well known for roles in such classic series as Blake's 7, I, Claudius and The Tomorrow People.

So this week's Torchwood.

Had a lot of potential I felt, but in the end turned out like it was ripped off from "The Hand of Fear".

Mysterious hand/glove out to resurrect it's self/some demon thing through Sarah Jane/Owen.

And I was expecting more for the stories with Martha in them but so far the last two haven't been anything great. And what happened to the alien sleeper cell story arc? I expected that to be an ongoing plot this season as it had a heap of potential but so far .... nothing.

i haven't gotten to the Marhta ones yet but it'll start on Saturday. That is, if I even feel like watching them. It seems like Torchwoods getting more and more boring. That or I'm getting tired of watching jack make out with everyone. I know, not every episode but it gets old.. fast.

And from what Burn said, the next 3 won't be any good either.

Season 2 of Torchwood is a MASSIVE improvement over the first season.

Though with all the "demons" they seem to have to be dealing with, i'd love to see a Torchwood/Supernatural cross-over.

I totally agree with both points. But the sad thing is I'm losing interest and fast. I've started watching Naruto on Cartoon network during the commercials and forgetting to click back over. I hate Naruto and I still find it better than TW.

At least Supernatural has me on my toes with suspense. I can't wait to find out what's going to happen at the end of the season.
