I was wondering if it was Welker. Glad it was him and not someone else. It was ok, but the flanged effect, even just a little bit, would've made it better. I mean SW's voice is his most distinguishing characteristic, and they didn't use it. Cullen's voice for #1 made the movie for me. It would've been the best G1 nod to the fans of ROTF if they kept the voice. I wonder if this was Bay's decision, Welker's or both??

Yea his G1 voice would have been better. But I hadnt even picked up on that until now. I was tripping out with him being a satellite and all. Which I think was kind of brilliant. He even shot out ravage which was cool. Maybe the original voice actor was not available?

This version was similar to his G1 counterpart, in the cartoons he gathered intelligence and data for the Cons. He played that to the hilt in ROTF. The 3rd movie will definetly have more Soundwave kicking ass and taking names. I hope they introduce Rumble and Laserbeak in the 3rd movie.


I thought Welker's Soundwave was perfect for the movie. Was Calm cool and collected.

You mean not being able to understand like this movie's plot points? A vocoder voiced Soundwave would EASILY have been audible with the sound set up in theaters. I don't buy that excuse one bit.

Uhhhhh then that's not the same voice. No vocoder means not the same.

im so tired of hearing "g1 fans" complain about his voice. if you are the hardcore g1 fan you think you are then you would know that that IS Soundwaves voice, welker did the voice the exact same way he always has, they just didnt as strong of an effect over it (as many fans who know what they are talking about already stated)! so if you call your self a g1 fan and are upset about soundwaves voice in the movie, take a break from comming to this or any other transformers site rewatch g1 and then come back and admit you were wrong.

They use a synthesizer/vocoder for his voice in G1. I watched that show a million times growing up and it's the voice any legitimate fan identifies Soundwave with.

The voice he ended up with in this film was without syth/vocoder. It it was like all of the other characters he's lent that voice to in his time. He did it for the Devil in Eddie Murphy's "The Golden Child" and the Devil in "Spawn" just to name a few.......

Look I understand the fanboys wanna stick up for this movie, but it's getting out of hand with the excuses. The ROTF people even stated they didn't use the original voice because they thought it would be too hard to understand. Ummmmmm I know I never had a problem understanding him. And to think he'd be inaudible on the sound systems in theaters? C'mmmmmmmon.

Welker still had that emotionless pattern I know and love but how can I say it? Only way I can describe is misuse of money. Get a dog for Mojo to hump--Like that there's nothing else they can have them do like bark their heads off. Fill the college scene with male eye candy--no eye candy for the females, added balls on a robot, lack commonsense composing Mikaela's wardrobe, the jar jar twins over used and don't rent--not buy-rent a synthesizer for the voice which after Oppy's is my favorite.

Personally I think the voice was perfect.

Seems to me that Welker always used this voice for Soundwave, and the synthesizers were added latter... however in the movie they just didn't add the synthesizers!

And there you have it kids! Just blows me away that we actually get another original voice actor back to reprise a role and it STILL just isn't good enough. That's where the real "WTF?!!!!" part of this thread should come in. How many times, how many ways and by how many people dose it have to be reiterated that this is not, nor was it EVER advertised as being, the G1 series.
It's getting so folks can't even just enjoy a damn movie for what it is anymore. What is so horribly freaking wrong with society today that it is creating issues like this?

Ya that's convenient. If I peruse the board I'll find defenders of the nonsensical plot lines defend it as a nod to G1 in it's level of plausible absurdities.

You pay homage to the original. They used Prime's voice right? Just because Welker voiced him, it doesn't leave many of us satisfied because it's not the voice. Why can't we have that? We have to put up with all the other BS this movie is laced with.

What you're hearing is intermittent moments when the effects of the vocoder dies down. Look, there's no arguing this, the TF2 team openly stated they ditched the original SW voice......for reasons that to this day remain ridiculous.

Soundwave was always my favorite character growing up and he has a huge following they really messed up the whole character in ROTF, a stationary sattelite!? give me a break. i understand that this is a whole new storyline and look for the transformers but they need to stay true to the old formula, i need a starscream story line and more soundwave but props to bay to atleast have ratchet come from soundwaves chest.

Soundwave has always been about cominications, so a satalite was very fitting.

IIRC in the G1 series, there were two or three incidents where Soundwave's voice wasn't synthesized or given the vocoder effect. One was were Megatron stole the anti-matter formula for his fusion cannon and another ith the Return of Optimus Prime. There was an episode somewhere the the second season which I can't quite recall so yes basically this IS Soundwaves voice.

Correct, at least three times in G1 its heard - Welker got it bang on

They just didn't use the synthesizer thats all - i think they made the right choice

It was a suitably good voice but I would rather it had the effects on it. I do not buy the reason given for changing it.

Whats next? Shockwave gets 2 eyes cos he would have no depth perseption with only 1!!!!!

I still don't see what's to complain about. Synth effects or otherwise...we still got the exact same voice actor providing the exact same voice work he did in the original show. Far as I'm concerned, end of discussion xD

Would you have preferred they find a new voice actor for him? Would you prefer him to have SpongeBob's voice instead? I can think of about a million ways that would have actually been bad. :3

The problem is that Soundwaves G1 voice is an iconic part of the cartoon. To say that this isn't a G1 movie isn't really true, its using some of the characters from G1. Most of the series that ran after G1 had some form of connection to those characters. So you can say that all TF series are linked to G1.

I don't know of any series where Soundwave didn't have that electronic sound to his voice, it may not always have been the same effect but I'm sure it was always there.

I know its an odd thing but if you are going to make a Transformers movie you SHOULD keep the elements that make the character who they are. Otherwise, you might as well give them a totally different/new name. If they had all been brand new characters then maybe people wouldn't find so much to complain about as we could have accepted them for what they are and not what we consider they should be.

You know what, screw EVERYONE!! Dump Welker AND Cullen from TF3. In fact reset the whole @$%* thing. Dump all the current human actors. Bring in total unknowns, bring in brand new Voice Actors and lets spend 2 1/2 hours watching Unicron suck the crap out of our planet while indiscriminat robots blow the hell out of each other. And right at the last 5 minutes we get to watch Prime (Voiced by special guest VA Paul Rubens) pull some new, unexplained kind of matrix out of his exhaust port, shout "Light our darkest hour!" and destroy Unicron and transport all the Transformers back to a restored Cybertron.

How's THAT sit with you people??? NOW you have something worth bitching about!


...and before 80% of you ask, Paul Rubens is "Pee Wee Herman", so there's something else to get stuck in your brain like the chours of a really crappy song.

..........but no. There wasn't a single thing wrong with this movie. It was the equivalent of celluloid perfection. We're not allowed to point out anything.

I can only imagine what the staunch supporters would've done had Cullen not voiced Prime.

Ok, I can understand complaining about the plot, or lack thereof. I can understand complaining about the overuse of four-letter-words. I can understand complaining about useless new characters. But such heat over a voice? I mean, c'mon...it's not like Soundwave's voice was incredibly out of character. I don't hear anyone complaining about Wheelie's new voice. I mean...his rhyming, sing-song speech patters were soooo defining and iconic of him, weren't they?

Personally, I'm much more irritated about what they did to Jetfire. As a character, it works, sure. But as the character of "Jetfire", no.

Sorry guys, that came across just a little bit harsher than it needed to be. I'm a smoker (spare the lecture, I'll only get my ire up) and I had gone without since yesterday. I turn into a real ***hole when I have to go without but I found someone to take pity on me (actually they just didn't want to put up with me being a grouch) so I've had one and I'm much better now.

I still think there are a lot of ungrateful, misguided people out there turning this into something WAY bigger then it needs to be but at least now I won't be as likely to go for someones throat as I would have 30 minutes ago. And I make no appologies for the Pee Wee Herman reference either. That one was thrown in solely for the purpose of screwing with your heads and I hope it causes angst for someone somewhere.
