How about medals for achievements, like 100% strafe, 1 hit Kill, stuff like that?
**EDIT**
Medals are given for many things, not just combat. There is the Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct, Serving in various theaters, Emergency Service and many others that aren't directly combat related.
Actually most ribbons are medals, the medals themselves are actually only worn for certain formal functions. The ribbons stand in their place when just worn on Dress Greens/Blues for other functions. The ribbon is usually the colors of the medals "ribbon" that holds the medal.
For Example:
National Defense Service Medal
National Defense Service Ribbon
Notice the colors. The ribbon is worn when the medal is not.
