I've got to say, I only picked up [Optimus] Prime because I am a slut for G1 (or G1-ish) Optimus Primes
I find this is very weak reason to buy a sub-par toy, especially if it is a representation of a character you worship. Hasbro knows there are fanatics and zealots out there that will buy anything just because it's a ______ (name of character of your choice) toy and will not discern the quality of the toy due some emotional attachment to the said toy.
Heck, I love Wolverine, but that doesn't mean I am going to buy a toy wearing a pink tutu and with joints looser than Kanye West's lips on Grammy night representing him. Think of it this way - the more you buy crappy designed and engineered Optimus toys, the more Hasbro/Takara will make them. This definitely would not do the character of Optimus any justice.
That said, I'm extremely relieved that the bulk of the effort on the design and engineering was focused on Silverbolt and the crappy design and engineering went into Optimus. I would had been extremely unhappy if it was the other way around.

Agree. With Devastator, you can see some degree of thought put into the engineering of the toy. Can's say the same with Optimus, unfortunately. The only plus to the Optimus Prime mold is that they are using it for Menasor - a gestalt character that has not seen the light of the market since 1986-1988. While far, far from perfect, it's at least a reappearance.

I can only agree with half of what you said - most fans aren't multi-billion dollar companies with people hired to know and represent their product. I have issues with this toy purely from an engineering perspective (i.e. Mixmaster should had been design much better given it's a voyager size figure with lots of space to play with to hide the limbs and conceal parts that would had made a better looking vehicle mode). Hasbro has no excuse to be lazy, especially when this toy will command hundreds of dollars. Each.
