As much as everyone seems to be knocking the new Optimus, I like it. I kinda wish the leader Megatron they are making would be voyager size instead to go with this Optimus.

Anyone have any guesses to what Protectobot or Combaticon from G1 will be phased out and replaced in this line?

My wagers are Groove (replace with Off Road Repaint New Character) and Blastoff (replaced with one of the Jets of Superion repaint, new character. Although I hope I am wrong about Blastoff as I really like it. I would rather see Vortex gone, but we all know Alpha Bravo is Vortex in disguise, so he is in for sure, along with Onslaught.

That's not correct. Hasbro created the term "Generation 2" for the rebranding of Transformers in the early 90's. It was emblazoned on the packaging for each toy, and the term "Generation 2" was also used for the tie-in media at the time, which consisted mostly reruns of the original Sunbow Cartoon with "Cybernetic Space Cube" scene transitions added and a new ugly 90's CGI opening, which even spoke the phrase "Generation 2." The term "Generation 1" was developed by fans to describe the original toys that came before, but the term became so pervasive and popular that Hasbro and Takara Tomy have officially adopted the term for the original line of Transformers and all associated media, including modern revisits of that continuity family. This can be evidence from "Generation 1" call outs on packaging for various reissues on G1 toys and the subline imprint "G1 Series" for the toys of the latter half of the Universe 2008 line that fit that motif.

I stand corrected on G2. I was correct on G1, however.

I surely hope not. If so, Arcee and Chromia are going to be VERY tough to get. If at all, outside of scalpers and the like. Just like with RTS Windcharger.

There! You learned how to count to three today! Yay for you!

So...what do you call the years between 1994 and 2013? Because I'm pretty sure Transformers existed back then.

well i sense some distaste for anything thing Beast era , UT, RiD, Animated , Movie, and to some extent the Aligned related in what Shockblast2 posted above #-o >:oP

Which would make this "G3" something he made up. Oops.

LOL....do you know how to count?

If so, G3 should not be too hard to understand. See my prior post if you need help with that.

Official use, vs. non-official aka fan term. Look up my post on the previous page on the matter ;)

You know G1 and G2 were never called that until the fans started the terms, right?

Look at the comics and toy packaging: "Generation 2" started with Hasbro (even if the symbols originated in Europe), so that particular term was official from the very beginning in the US. "Generation 1" on the other hand, can be considered a derivative of that made by fans, but it was still made official by Hasbro years later. Your "Generation 3" does not exist when Hasbro's concerned, and probably never will. Not saying you shouldn't use the term, just understand we don't consider it official.

That's my stance on the matter. Now, I would advise moving that particular subject to a new thread altogether, and keep this thread focused on Combiner Wars.

That is actually a good idea as I see no discussion board on the matter. And just for the record, it is isn't "my" G3 title. That title has just as much validity as G1 did when fans started using it as well. And why not? It really has no other logical designation. But, I agree that this is about combiner wars, so lets move on that subject.

Who do you think the replacements will be for the other gestalt members down the line?

While it is indeed true that fans were first to use the term "Generation 1", the very name, "Generation 2", which we established was invented by Hasbro before "Generation 1" was named by fans, directly implies that what came before belongs to a presequent "Generation." Because you are a fan of numbers, you know that "1" comes before "2", so the fan creation of "Generation 1" is a very natural evolution from Hasbro's introduction of the concept of "Generation 2."

shajaki wrote:anyone else think its odd that the megatron slated for this line, isnt a combiner torso? food for thought.

Well, the Megatron to go along with this new subline is a Leader Class figure, so my guess is that combining other characters with Optimus Prime as a torso is supposed to put the two faction leaders on somewhat "equal footing." Megatron is naturally bigger, but Prime can combine with other Autobots to become more powerful and become roughly leader Megatron's size. Or, maybe we will get a Voyager Class Megatron down the road at some point that is compatible with the Combiner Wars deluxe limbs. I'd certainly love a Leader Class Optimus Prime with a trailer too. Who knows for certain right now?

Anyone he wants (who is a compatible Deluxe sized Combiner Wars figure). A lot of people are hoping for redecoes of the Stunticons as similar looking Autobots to homage the episode of the original cartoon where Optimus and several Autobots attempted to infiltrate a Decepticon operation posing as Menasor.

Yes, and I wish it was. I would love to see the Leader one reclassed, like they did with BH Optimus.

Hasbro has picked some strange characters for Leader class. Chief of which is Thundercracker. I don't see that one being very popular at retail.

I don't see that happening with Hasbro, BUT that would make a cool custom job for the person who would want to take it on. Cool idea though.

I think Hasbro putting Optimus into the mix is to help draw in younger fans who are not very familiar with the combiners of the G1 series. Not sure why they would not do the same with Megatron.

Sure, but the natural evolution of the current series, which is called Generations, would be G3, since it is the third generation of stand alone figures in their own line. What separates them from classics is the fact that Hasbro purposely set out to redo some of the G1 bots, and even called them that on some of the packaging. That is not the case with the current run, and the fact that they used characters that did not exist in G1 proves that out.

Pretty sure Vortex will be Alpha. I thought what you thought about Blastoff as well. Maybe so, and I hope, because I really like Blastoff as it is my favorite Combaticon. Maybe Offroad will be retooled and repainted into Swindle, and it will be Brawl who gets the axe?

So funny when a whole legion of people completely loose their sh*t when something is done slightly different with a franchise.

Blades is Alpha with a different head.

Doubt it, since people would be expecting another use of the Tailgate/Windcharger mold for that instead, or a redeco into Tailgate and/or Windcharger from any new mold Rook despite Hasbro releasing a new Tailgate and Windcharger so recently.

Probably just another new guy like AB and Offroad.

There are a few problems with calling the current Generations line "Generation 3", one of which is simply ignoring the decades of product and continuities that came after Generation 2 but before now. The second problem is that Generation 2 is a continuation of Generation 1. This is supported by the tie-in fiction and the stance of Hasbro and Takara Tomy themselves that Generation 2 the future of Generation 1, with many familiar G1 characters being upgraded into new bodies (or at the very least, getting a new paint job). If you want to use the term Generation 3 in parity with Generation 1 and 2, then you are implying that Generation 3 is continuous with Generations 1 and 2. Since Generation 2 is the future of Generation 1, and Generation 3 is the future of Generation 2, then Generation 3 is the future of Generation 1. At the end of the day, it's all still Generation 1. I know that's not your point of view, so I don't think "Generation 3" is the trend you want to set.

Lets be fair to shockblast, Fansproject used the term G3 for their CHUG Optimus trailer so he's clearly not the only one who thinks that G3 should be a thing we use.
