But I don't hate The Golden Compass (because i've never seen it). I, and many others, have expressed our disappointment that Transformers didn't win.

And those who have seen both films have expressed their belief that Transformers was a better movie visually.

They're not hating the movie, they're just of the belief that the better movie missed out.

Why therefore, should they be glad that The Golden Compass won?

I'd be willing to bet that out in this great big world of ours there are plenty of people who have seen both movies and would say that Golden Compass was a more deserving winner instead of Transformers. In their opinion, the better movie did win.

Sky Glory of Iacon is not saying that people should only say positive things, but rather that there are better ways of expressing the loss of a favorite team/pick/whatever than with the way that most people have been acting. Language such as "This is flipping bullshit" is really no way to be acting towards any sort of loss. Sure you can be disappointed, and you don't necessarily have to be glad that the other team won, but the fact of the matter is that the other team DID win and you can either accept the defeat gracefully (while begrudgingly cursing under your breath) or you can bitch, whine, cry and moan about something that you can't change.

Now that's not to say that everyone has been acting negatively. Still, I think it's an attitude that some people should learn to adopt.

Everything below this line is responses to other random things on the board. Above applies to the current flow of the conversation.

I'm Sorry, I'm quoting everyone again. :-(

This could be true. After all, they are bears and bears are Godless killing machines after all. I wouldn't put it past them. *nods* Where is that pic from, btw? Hilarious!

Burn wrote:What I find odd though, I realise the Academy Awards are American based yet are pretty much used as a world gauge but a number of movies nominated each year barely get a mention in Australia.

The Bucket List was nominated wasn't it? Only opened here last week. I guess that's why I find it hard to follow the Oscars because a good chunk of the movies nominated are barely heard of over here.:?

I personally find it kinda sad that the American Oscars is considered to be some sort of World Gage. There are so many wonderful foreign movies out there, but unless you actively go out and search for them you will never hear about them. That's what I get for living in a country full of people who don't like to read subtitles. Living in the Midwest doesn't help, either. :P

"The Bucket List" wasn't even close to being nominated in any category, but with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman I bet that is a great movie.

Burn wrote:Why do I say this? Because they technical group had their awards last week and Transformers won there because it was judged on the work involved in producing the final CGI look, not the on the story like the Oscars are.

Maybe that is what the whole problem is: each type of awards show base the winners on different criteria. At at tech awards show the judges are going to be "experts" or close to in in this field and judge the special effects based on... well, technical stuff. Then at the Oscars they would give the award based on... something other than just the technical stuff? Okay, I don't know details, but in those simple terms that could make sense of the differences between awards shows, eh?

People's Choice Awards of any Kind + Me = I stopped watching any sort of People Choice Awards when I realized they they were just another way for Corporations to keep people from thinking for themselves by constantly shoving their products and trends down the publics throat by trying to convince everyone that their trends are "cool" and "the in thing".

Then again, I'm a cynic.

Not really, no. Academy Awards are decided by the best in the industry, and to be able to decide requires an invitation. People's Choice Awards and MTV Movie Awards are chosen by random idiots who think they know movies because they go into a theater then talk on their cell phone all throughout Pirates of the Caribbean.

You're not going to see a John Grisham or Tom Clancy adaptation, or a Tom Hanks or Denzel Washington movie advertising that it won a People's Choice award, because those guys are so far above that.

Armored Talking Ass Kicking Polar Bears > Large Sentient Robots

So I gotta agree with the judgment of Golden Compass beating out Transformers.

Plus the cgi, while in Transformers it was good, it wasn't spectacular, you couldn't really see the actual cgi robots for too long, but in Golden Compass it was always there, up close, and looking awesome.

And that brings up another thing I think that would have helped the TF movie was more screentime for the bots.
With a less complex design it would have gave the bots more screen time because you didn't have to do so much at each frame. Thus sparing money for more bot time and animators didn't have frayed nerves around deadline time because they beat the deadline.

But the makers behind Transformers WERE really happy with the result, unless they are lying on the dvd; they slugged it out and did damn good work.
You can be an amazing modeler, texture artist and animator for making a bear that walks and talks, or a cat for that matter. But surely, photographing every small part of nearly a dozen cars, making them into textures, scaling all these pieces to create an actual car, animating all these pieces so they move in perfect synchronism into a robot, who can then move as a robot? As well as lighting it as actual car parts would with their current environment reflecting on them? That requires more than just amazing Maya workers.

To me, screen time of these elements does not enter into it; its a Special Effects award, given to the amount of work the crew put into achieving the desired effect.
And there WERE some dodgey CGI moments in Golden Compass.
Of course, this is my opinion, but having seen how the Oscars give awards, they don't have much credibility anymore. Therefore, this result doesn't change my mood :P Transformers is the best CGI I've ever seen, up there with Gollum, and Oscars cannot convince me otherwise.

Thanks.

Even though I don't vote for such awards I feel that I am enough of a movie buff to form an educated opinion on what is and isn't a good movie, much like a number of people who do vote for those awards.

So thank you, for pretty much labelling an every day average movie goer like myself an idiot. But you know what? I'm not offended. Because I would much rather value the opinions of random idiots because like me, they go to the movies to be enjoyed, not to sit there and analyze every frame.

Meh i saw it and it looked really fake. Tfs actually looked like they could be there. Because we know what real poler bears look like so we have something to compare it too and they look too CGI to look real.

Wow, talk about some word-twisting!

I myself am an average movie goer, but I'm talking about the kind of people who take movie shows like that way too seriously. (Hence the other two paragraphs of my post)

Pffts. Who needs the Oscars? As a fan I acknowledge the hard work put into that movie.

And heck.. if there are Transformers Sequels, than they are more likely to win.

For example, LotR:FotR, and LotR:TTT didn't win big. But LotR:RotK took home everything. Of course, my memory is fuzzy so I don't know if the previous two actually took home more than RoTK.

Your memory is fine. FotR and TTT only got one or two noms, perhaps an actual oscar for the musical score. RotK got 11 noms and won all of them

The oscars are a FN joke anyway. I hear people saying they watch the oscars to see what people are wearing. Yeah we can really take that show serious. Its all riged and fixed. Big FN joke. TF should have won something. The visual effects where breath taking.

Yeah, and look who is deciding what wins: The best and brightest in the Film industry! And we all know THEY only pick terrible movies to win, like No Country For Old Men, Godfather Parts I and II, Rain Man, Schindler's List, Forrest Gump, Braveheart, Crash...obviously they have no taste in movies.

I am not surprised by this at all and to be very honest, I am heavily amused. The special effects were good, but not spectacular. I've seen better and obviously, so did the judges.

EDIT:
RotK got 11 noms and won all of them

And this is the one I was referring to. I can't wait to see what can top this because I get covered in goosepimples every time I see this movie. I am utterly stunned by the effects and in the theater I had a sudden fangasm and squeed rather loudly. I have never done that before in a theater, and haven't since.

I think TF totally got ripped off in this category. The Golden Compass! A box office flop! Since when does a box office flop beat a hollywood blockbuster in the oscars? And we are talking Robots that range in between 15 feet tall to 37 feet tall vs. Talking polar bears! Transformers might seriously have the best special effects I've ever seen, its total crap it didn't win an oscar!

im not really surpised that it happend and pissed me off all completly if they did winners who makes the most money at the boxoffice then i can understand but i ddint see the show and from veiwing the past resposnes obiasly i was wrong on how they pick the winners in a way i thought they did the show is fixed.

way i would have picked the winners is who made the most money at the boxoffice and dvd sales that how thought the oscars would have done it guess not maybe it will happen at kids choice awars this saturda if they have enught votes i dont klnow about you guys but im getting tired of seeing the samefilms winning over and over again like shrek and others i can think of at the time shrek is good film but let it go allready first was good i didnt see the third one yet but i for one didnt like the second compared to the first shrek it seemed to let go in the comedy section.

and piartes 1& 2 where both had good comedy and action but the last pirates seemed to me they where just looking for the action stuff in it

That would be horribly lopsided. Just because a movie is good, doesn't mean it makes a lot of money, and just because a movie makes a lot of money, doesn't mean it's good.
