I can't help but be disapointed though. I know and I am happy that it was even nominated for an oscar, let alone three, but I still feel a bit shafted. But not for me. Instead I feel shafted for all of the designers, animators, modelers, riggers and lightning effect people. I honestly don't think a better job could have been done to make them fit into real world cinematography. Not once did I think "oh man that looks so fake" when watching the movie. It was one of the few movies I've seen where the CG actually fit with the real actors. That in itself is a huge accomplishment that should be rewarded and awarded. Seeing it go to the Evil Twin of Narnia just leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth for the people that picked Compass.

Re: Transformers Movie Loses All 3 Oscars
Wow, I am just floored by Golden Compass winning. There was nothing new or orginial in the visuals of that movie. The Bear designs were done years ago, although tightened up. The fight scenes have been done and redone in similar movies, and the story line for the cgi is a classic. There was nothing new about this damn film!!!!
I am not surprised by Bourne winning. It was a damn good movie and it had excellent sound and music. Transformers should have lost in this cat.
Lets face the fact, Michael Bay will never get the nods from the old geezers at this academy. Besides, it appears that the academy is dying anyway. With a constant downward t.v. audience for 5 years, while increase in audience's in other award shows. I will say that Hollywood is bleeding heavily, and let us not forget, the Sundance Film Awards are for the art of movie making. Hollywood is for entertaining people!!!! It is about damn time that it starts to get back to its purpose.

Re: Transformers Movie Loses All 3 Oscars
I was disappointed too and the reaction in the audience showed it as well from what I heard.
There seemed to be a grumble and tone of shock when it was announced that Transformers lost but you know what people who really cares in the long run ? yes it would have been great but the film was a success regardless of the haters constant whines even in this thread already ( shocking ) and it just makes me wonder why they continue to live in 1984 the rest of their lives when Transformers first started here in the USA and acting like they have some sort of creative control over this franchise, if you don't like the 2007 movie fine but it's here to stay and the sequels are coming and no amount of hating trolls is going to deter my enjoyment of the films.
I sincerely laugh at most of the responses from them and expecting this to be Shakespearian dialog, complaining about shiny robots and explosions ? yet they wanted this based entirely on G1 which had what ? characters based on shiny robots, dialog geared towards 8-15 year olds and two diametrically opposed factions fighting for millions of years so I think a few explosions are in order for the new movie!
This current version of the franchise has survived death threats to the director ( an absolutely unforgivable low life tactic ) from hating trolls and babies whining on every forum from here to the official forums so Transformers not winning a few oscars is not going to stop it in any way so for those people open minded enough for different things then this is not a reason for us to stop enjoying the next installment of this franchise, it's just not a deal breaker in any way.

We just have to face it, even smaller categories like visual and sound are only considered "credible" by the Academy if they're attached to a high class film.
And despite Transformers taking CGI to a new level, the fact that it's not considered a high class film hurt it.
Why do I say this? Because they technical group had their awards last week and Transformers won there because it was judged on the work involved in producing the final CGI look, not the on the story like the Oscars are.

Even if that's true it hurt it winning an oscar not the ACTUAL technical achievement of the film that it took to create it.
Did it hurt the chances of a sequel ? no, they already decided that long before the oscars but they're certainly not going to stop what they already started certainly not after what the first movie accomplished so if a group of academy members voted for some
movie where we've seen all of those types of creatures environments and situations a million times before maybe they just wanted to play it safe and go with what looks comfortable to them but as I said before it's not going to change my view of the franchise or my decision to go to the sequels.

10,000 parts, fully rendered, ready to be inserted into live film, and that's just in Ironhide's gun. I applaud my fellow animators for winning for the Golden Compass, but dammit, the ILM guys probably spent the last few years without sleep creating those bad boys.
At the risk of starting something political, I'll bet the oscar committee is in the pocket of that damn Athiest Polar Bear Lobby.

Re: Transformers Movie Loses All 3 Oscars
I was hoping Transformers would win for visual effects, but given their hate of Bay and popcorn movies I suppose this was to be expected.
But for Golden Compass to win? Does anybody else hear the long resounding "WTF?!"? And they used the Polar bear shot!
Almost feels like a slap in the face if you ask me.
I mean, if they don't like Transformers can't they at least think of a better way to cover their tracks? Or if they felt Golden Compass was deserving, couldn't they have picked a better shot? Jesus...

are you kidding me! the golden compas! wat the...because you know a movie like the golden compas has NEVER been done before *cough cough* this just goes to show that a scifi/action has no chance at the oscars i cant even remember the last time one of that genre has been recognised
i guess the guys need to do better on TF2...(if thats even humanly possible) haha there are probly guys at ILM sayin "****! i knew ironhide needed more than 10 000 pieced in his cannons!"

I fail to see what's so glamorous about Polar bears over robots that can seemlessly turn into vehicles. Well, guess Bay's just gonna have to turn it up a knotch in TF2. Still I call 1 out of 3!
As a matter of fact, how can you guys consider yourselves fans if you're so bent on the movie not winning? Seem more your priorities are on groping your personal egos.
I am also a fan of Pullman's novels and I think the movie got a bad rap because the catholic church thought the movie was making them look bad. So I am kinda glad it won. So chill dude the older they get the more they know what they are doing. It is much more diffacult to CGI living breathing animal than a robot that turns into a semi-truck. You have so much to add to the polar bear: breathing in and out, muscle movements, also mouth lip movement. Compaired to the Bay Bots they had too much detail on them to really do it right without forgeting something. Also all that detail was distracting at times.

thats an indication of how hard they worked to animate, if you counted all the polygons that were used, it would take you a very long time

Re: Transformers Movie Loses All 3 Oscars
I am very disappointed in this result, but then, I've always been disappointed by the Oscars and I always mean to watch them but I *always* forget. This year is no exception on both counts.
Pleased with Bourne getting awards, that was an awesome film. I saw Pirates 3, Golden Compass and (of course) Transformers in the cinema, and for simple application of special effects, Transformers wins hands down.
I'm not saying that as a fanboy, I say that as a critic. True the direction was a bit poor in the fact the robots blurred a lot in the fight sequences, but for time and effort (I've watched the extras on the TF DVD, I even use the program they use) they deserve an Oscar. Photographing car parts and modelling them all in Maya and animating it seamlessly in a live action sequence?
Golden Compass, I saw, as a lower quality Lord of the Rings. True the Daemons were pretty damn good CGI, but there were some awful scenes; the battle at the end in particular. A wide shot of the army of guardsmen with their dog Daemons... not only did ALL of the dogs look exactly the same... the soldiers themselves looked identical to each other!
I know... what's done is done, and the Oscar's continue to insult the film lover in me. In the end, the Oscar's are increasingly meaningless. DVD sales, trailer downloads, hell even Golden Globes and BAFTAs, are more accurate.

same here. What should have happened is when the golden compass people come in to accept the award prime should come in and be like AUTOBOTS RELIEVE THEM OF THEIR OSCAR and they swing in and Jazz steps in GIMMIE THAT! that would rock.Eradicator wrote:What the friggin ****, Golden Compass beat Transformers for special effects?!

Hey my origional stament was taken way out of context. I wrote it once I heard that there was a Megatron Cameo in the show. That is normaly a good sign for a film that it will do something. Once I hit submit, I found out that we lost.
It was a matter of bad timing, that still however is no reason to post a reply like that.
Very uncalled for.

There was first Bonecrusher then StarScream then Megatron, they were not nearly as complex or detailed as the movie versions but it was still cool to see in the introduction of the Oscars, I have it recorded on my new Tivo system which I am loving enormously!

Lord of the Rings had better special effects. And no, this isn't good publicity for the Golden Compass. People forget that this is the visual effects category. How the hell is GC going to back up its claim for visual effects with an obviously fake polar bear? If it HAD to win something it should at least look like it should win said category, not because the Oscars felt sorry for them.
You think stringing thousands of polygons is easy? I may sound over-dramatic but from what I've heard, its like piecing millions of Lego bricks. Those guys lost sleep trying to finish up before the deadline, not to mention cutting corners because of the budget.

Ya know before this becomes a flame war and I am called names. Lets all be good sports and be glad The Golden Compass won. I mean its not like we can change the results can we?
I know, I know it hurts when we don't win but that is life we sometimes win, we sometimes lose. Losing isn't bad it can be a good thing to experance. It makes us work harder and makes us more determined for the next time.

So basically if my basketball team loses, I should be glad the other team won?
Still doesn't make sense to me.
Or do you simply believe that you shouldn't be allowed to express your opinion unless it's positive?

Yes, cause in the end it was just a game. You played your best and hating the other team won't change the game's outcome at all.
