Maybe because everything about them looks terrible... From their hideously, over-blocky beast modes, to their hampered bot modes, all the way to the anorexic combined mode (which somehow manages to look even worse now in that three-quarter view)
Razorclaw shoulda been a chunky ultra/leader class figure
There's nothing wrong with these, they look great. People are too f-in picky. You all expect 3rd party looks for Hasbro pricing.
All of that, plus nostalgia goggles. Seriously, take a look at the side-by-side comparisons shots of the G1 Predacons and Predaking compared with this modern redo. Anyone pretending the originals were somehow less blocky, better proportioned, or better sculpted, is lying to themselves because reality doesn't stack up to their unreasonable expectations. The ONLY thing the G1 figures were compared to these new figures is better armed.
Onyx honestly looks like he was instead based directly off of the Binder of Revelation design for himself, Onyx Prime (hoofed feet, clawed hands, bird-mask head, multi-layered torso/shoulders with triangular features, etc.) instead of a preexisting Pretender's inner robot.JelZe GoldRabbit wrote:o.supreme wrote:I'm not sure how you can tell just by looking at the PM itself what Pretender shell it could go with. Prime Masters are primarily styled after the inner robot of the shell they come with, you can see that with Metalhawk, Cloudburst, Skullgrin, Submarauder and Octopunch. Their retools Landmine, Bludgeon (both from Metalhawk), Waverider (Cloudburst) and Bomb-Burst (Skullgrin) keep the chest of their progenitors at the very least.
Onyx Prime doesn't seem to be based on a Pretender from what I can tell, so chances are he has no shell to speak of, or it's a very obscure one. He may never have been meant for the regular Prime Master Class.

My only true complaint is the lack of a gun. I would have like both bots to come with a gun that combine into the double-barrelled gun for the big bot. A missed opportunity. Oh well... I'll just have to make one I guess.

My good sir, may I suggest the following as a solution to your armament dilemma?
You are quite welcome!

I'm hoping that Hasbro will be selling Onyx separately somehow. This is an expensive set to buy just to complete the Prime Master set.
I can guarantee one hundred percent they will not sell Onyx by himself, it's like one of those 300 dollar lego sets that has a really cool exclusive figure.
Ohhhhhh i hate those sooooooo much!
It's a special edition version, onyx will be getting a retail release, it'll just have different colors
Yep, if it was our only chance at the guy they would be calling him an exclusive instead of a special edition the same way they're calling the clear Megatronus that comes with Blastoff a special edition.
Single Megatronus should look like this:
The core should be orange without the yellow paint and with a pink-ish symbol and no black outline. The bot mode should have black arms like in the art and like how all Prime Masters' arms match their upper legs.
Doesn't mean there'll be a wave 4 of Prime Masters in PotP, they could be held over to wave 1 of War for Cybertron, it wouldn't be the first time we've seen lines mix.

I was looking at this last night on TFWiki. It's definitely different from the other Prime Masters, not just in design, but as I mentioned before his parts are odd for being all orange except for his upper legs which are black when all of the other PMs have their head, upper legs and arms match.
So, wild theory, what if they based his shell off something bestial, but still humanoid like Oilmaster?
The orange and black would actually work. They can do the back in black plastic, the front in orange and paint it up in silver, brown, and gold to get the colors right. The weapon can resemble a bird or something to give the Double Pretender vibe.

I grew up in the 90's and never discovered him until well into the 2000's, so your 'nostalgia goggles' argument holds absolutely no water; these things are hideous. Abominus and wolfwire and all of the studio series prove hasbro can do beast-formers and beast combiners right, I expected something better looking for my money
