To be fair, the end of AoE made it sound as if the next movie would be Optimus Prime in space looking for the Quintessons (or whatever Bay might retcon it to), but then why would he keep a semi truck alt mode?

As much as I agree with the criticism of Bay's predilection for military narratives or involvement, I agree more with ZeroWolf's point here. It's also being used/explored in the current IDW comics, and so far it's working fairly well (and much better than DotM/AoE, for example).
