Just curious, is there a precedent for making a toy of a comic only character that is no longer in the comics? Scrounge I guess, but he wasnt released on his own and was just a redeco with a new head and an enlarged hole.
I would like Tarn but he is so damn niche for a toy of his class (voyager?) that I dont know f Hasbro would do it.
Anyways, about Skyshadow, there is no doubt this will be a new mold (not a redeco of Sixshot who is getting redeco'd already) and will get a redeco as Thunderwing. While I am not fond of redecos for the hell of em, this one makes pefect sense and i dont mind it one bit. Hasbro said their reuse of modes would be smarter for Titans Return and this is a good example of that.
However, him being a pretender turned into a figure with a titan master means that the next phase wont be a redo of pretenders.
Also this would assume that we have at least the following leaders coming out next year at retail:
Sixshot, Skyshadow, Overlord and Thunderwing (with Delta Magnus and Quickswitch being part of boxsets).
Dont know if we will get another one since we only got 4 new leaders this year:
Skywarp, Powermaster Prime, Blaster and Soundwave

Yeah, if anyone was expecting the next line to be a Pretender-based line - which, honestly, didn't sound viable in the first place - then if this is true then there's no way they're gonna do it. In terms of Pretenders you don't have many characters people remember - Bludgeon, Thunderwing, Carnivac and Catilla and that's really about it. You'd need some star power behind a gimmick and line of characters this obscure and to take away arguably the most prominent Pretender besides Bludgeon from the potential line would just not make sense.
Also, much as the character and design is great; I don't expect Tarn to ever happen because, well...

Not exactly easy to sell that guy to the kiddies

Voyager would be best for a Marvel or Dreamwave Armada Thunderwing, while Leader would work for an IDW Thunderwing.
Generations Straxus Darkmount. Released to mass retail by Hasbro in 2010, never appeared in the IDW comics again after 2008 (and was only ever a bit character in there back then anyway).william-james88 wrote:Just curious, is there a precedent for making a toy of a comic only character that is no longer in the comics?

I pray we dont get pretenders and here's why:
What would a deluxe pretender be? It's be a shell the size of a deluxe figure with a robot inside the size of a legends or smaller and a voyager would be a a voyager size she'll with a robot smaller tha. A deluxe to fit it. That's what they did back in 1988. Big shells with 1 point of articulation and a tiny robot. Who wants that again. I sure don't.

If I had to guess what will come after Titans return it'd be Prime's and character we haven't gotten yet with some gimmick. This is called the Prime Wars Trilogy and if anyone is reading the comics we know IDW is working with hasbro on Generations and in issue 55 Galvatron warns Optimus Onyx Prime is coming. I think John is setting up the next event in the comics.
I think the final installment will be the Prime's returning and we'll finally get a line with rest of the 13 Primes. We have alpha Trion, we'll get a couple more a Optimus Primes toys so that would leave 11 more Primes.

Tarn had a bigger presence in IDW than Straxus ever did.william-james88 wrote:Randomhero wrote:

Even him and Scrounge weren't that prominent in the Marvel Comics, as both only ever appeared in (the same) two issues out of 80 (talking of the US issues only, as the UK issues did give Straxus more attention). It's just that those two issues out of 80 happened to be very memorable ones.

I still say Straxus is an obvious and fitting retool of Galvatron. The robot modes aren't a great match because of how boxy Straxus is, but with some clever retooling they could get an update that looks close enough. The artillery modes don't need much retooling at all. I don't know who came first, but Straxus could be Galvatron. Or the other way around.

PLEASE mean we've got a Leader Thunderwing in our future!!
Emerje
I want a Voyager Thunderwing. Deluxe was too small... Leader is far too big.
He's usually shown in the comics as larger than average, especially if this ends up being done IDW-style where he's massive, nearly combiner size.
Speaking of IDW, anyone notice that the last three mentioned Leader class figures are part of Megatron's "Warriors Elite"? Bring on Heretech and Killmaster! But more importantly they are also "Point One Percenters" with unique sparks. Six Shot, Sky Shadow, and Overlord are all .1%ers, as well as recent releases like Fortress Maximus, Optimus Prime, Megatron, Minimus Ambus/Ultra Magnus, and Shockwave. Strange coincidence, right? And only Shockwave isn't a Leader or larger. Maybe Grimlock, Scorponok, and Tarn could be coming soon as well?
Emerje
I had wondered if perhaps we'd see a Skullcrucher/Kroc retool as Grimlock. The big issue is how much extra plastic that would seem to require. Plus they'd probably make the color for the head different from the stand-alone Clobber head.
Kind of what I'm thinking for Grimlock would involve actually flipping the Skullcruncher mold. So the croc head becomes a dino tail and the croc tail gets replaced with a dino head. The front legs almost work as hind legs with some re-engineering and the rear legs could become dino claws. An advantage is you could probably get a BW Megatron out of the tooling using Nucleon as the head.
Likewise a retool of Mindwipe with the Ptero head as Swoop and the bat head replaced with a pterodactyl.
I could also see an Axiom crew coming out of some of these molds, lthough it sounds fairly much like a club exclusive.
Weirdwolf retooled as Cheetor, Skullcruncher retooled as Rattrap, Alpha Trion as Prowl, and Apeface/Infinitus as Primal.
It's almost a shame about Funpub because the Headmaster-y gimmick should allow for unprecedented retooling on a budget and/or free up retooling budgets for beast/car mode tweaks. The head may be gang molded but I bet there are workaround to produce whatever head with whatever body they want.

Straxus turned into a flying nothing in Marvel. Just because be turned into a flying nothing. That's why his robot looked nothing like his alt mode. That was the problem with all marvels Cybertronian modes. They were just nothing's driving or flying around.

If you're going to make Straxus become someone else, I think Beast Wars Megatron would be a novel approach. We know he had a name before Megatron, generally, and we know Straxus has a tendency to become a second Mega/Galvatron. Fits with people's desire here to see a BW Megatron as a new villain in IDW's G1 comics.
One idea I played with when I was hoping to pitch comics was Straxus becoming G2 Megatron. This frees up G1 Megs to either remain Galvatron or be an Autobot, depending on the continuity, while introducing G2 Megs. And from there, my idea is if G2 Megs is a separate character, he can be the very early incarnation of BW Megs.
It fits in a weird way. He's a purple-faced Megatron. he starts of a lot of the engineering/color schemes you see into BW. He also has "Megatron" written all over his body in G2 as though, you know, maybe he's trying TOO hard to convince everyone of who he is.
So in my head, G1 Megs is free to go into exile/stay Galvatron/stay an Autobot. Then Straxus creates the G2 Megs identity for himself to seize command of the Decepticons and proceeds to evolve into BW Megs. It's a clean solution to a range of problems in most G1 continuities.

Meaning characters we only saw in the comics, and principally characters we only saw in the IDW comics. Of that only Minimus Ambus and Drift exist as toys.

Re: Transformers Titans Return Product Reveals, News, Updates, Rumors, Leaks and more!
Loving what Hasbro has planned for 2017 so far. They're knocking those IDW inspired figures out of the park! So since we have all the Phase 6ers coming out back2back what are the odds that Tarn will be a mold mate of Megatron and Blitzwing?
Other DJD figures like Tesarus and Helex would be complicated (but could be leader class mold mates) but Vos could simply be a Legends class Shockwave repaint and Koan could be a Hardhead repaint, Nickel could either be a remold of that upcoming legends Bumblebee or even Cosmos, heck even The Pet could be a repaint of that Titan Master Sawback. Hope Hasbro is already on the move with these. It'll defiantly assure hardcore TF fans that they won't be sweeping us to the side for that Bayformers stuff next year.

Jihaxus was around before IDW, Windblade was a toy first and so was victorion. The comics are just cross sale platforms.
Nautica is a good example though.

Also Nova prime if you count battlecore OP.
Edit: also the rumoured nautica coming next year
Jihaxus was around before IDW, Windblade was a toy first and so was victorion. The comics are just cross sale platforms.
Nautica is a good example though.
I'm no comics guy, but does sentinel count?
I am not a G1 fan, please treat my opinions as such.

His face design and color scheme are IDW-inspired, but the character concept itself originated from Marvel G1, with Animated being the first franchise to give a toy to a character bearing the name.Hellscream9999 wrote:william-james88 wrote:MemphisR56 wrote:Jhiaxus. Windblade. Victorion.

Straxus got a toy in 2010
Good stuff, good stuff. But is it the same thing as Tarn getting a toy? Straxus (and scrounge) are classic comic characters. Would Tarn be seen the same way?
The new IDW characters and designs we did get in toy form that I know of are Gen Deluxe Megatron, Drift and Minimus Ambus and those were current (principle) characters that stuck around.
Jhiaxus. Windblade. Victorion.

I wouldn't throw in Winblade and Victorion. They're in the comics because of Hasbro. Not the other way around

When it comes to Nautica you don't even have to do a new toy. You can just use the Winblade mold and give her new wings, head, chest and vehicle cockpit and it would be just close enough to pass as her.
