In rural parts of the UK it's still very possible. It's very expensive to install broadband wires to one house halfway up a mountain. Presumably that goes for most other countries too.

I'm sure that there are places that still use dialup, but I'm in the middle of the desert. We still have good net.

Middle of the desert, or in a town in the middle of the desert? It's not the remoteness that's the real issue, it's when you're remote and the only available customer.
