Takara Tomy Masterpiece Shockwave (MP 29 Laserwave) box art revealed

This Shockwave is very tempting. This might just be my first Masterpiece figure since Skywarp way back when.

Apparently. He's not the first Japanese release to do so, but barring direct US translations of names in recent lines, including any "Autobot" and "Decepticon" prefixes, cases like this are few and far between in Japan. Other examples include:

- "Destron Octone" for the Henkei release of Universe 2008 Tankor
- "Cybertron Hot Rod" for the Henkei release of Universe 2008 Hot Shot
- "Cybertron Inferno" for the Henkei release of Universe 2008 Inferno
- "Cybertron Cheetus" for the Henkei release of Universe 2008 Cheetor
- "Cybertron Streak" for the Henkei release of Universe 2008 Silverstreak (regained for MP)
- "Cybertron Perceptor" for the Transformers Collection reissue

Crazy that Japan isn't immune to trademark issues, isn't it? I think "Ligier" into "Rijie" has proven that already

Now, I'm reconsidering picking up a Star Saber as he's the only figure since MP-10 I don't have at least one version of. Ugh.

"Shackwave" and toy-color variants seem like obvious potential releases.
If a gray recolor does eventuate, what will be very interesting is how it's handled, character-wise. Will be cast as the same character as Laserwave/Shockwave, like MP-18S, MP-21G and MP-10 EVA; as a separate entity, like MP-18B, MP-09B and MP-10B, thus adding a new neo-G1 character name to the brand; or as a drone-type non-character, like MP-01B.

Me too. I bought a "Shackwave" off of eBay a number of years ago as it was a cheaper way to get the mold than grabbing a G1 figure. Now that my financial position is stronger, I'd love to have both together in a display.

I really hope he gets released here in the US. He's not a realistic looking gun like Megatron, so that shouldn't be the excuse if he doesn't.

Looking at Shackwave always makes me nauseous. That shade of gray always churns my stomach. But just the toy.

Even nonrealistic toy guns like Nerf and Super Soaker still require orange barrel tips.

And someone in the Twincast Podcast said that Hasbro said that they can't/won't rerelease Classics Megatron in today's market, so with that toy's altmode being a Nerf gun design on its own, Shockwave looks to be out of luck, sadly.

Import him without telling anyone. It is only illegal once you get caught

Not that I have a huge Masterpiece collection, but I might consider this guy... And I might go Takara, since it is doubtful if Hasbro can/will even release this guy, and if they did they'd have to color the front of his gun mode orange, which would just look awful on him!

I suppose, though, if I got him then I'd have an even number of Autobots and Decepticons (discounting cassettes). Of course, I have an even number now if you go by character rather then by different toys, since I have two different versions of Optimus!

Man, if only they would release a decent Deluxe or (preferably) Voyager Class "Classics" style version of the character. Then I could get my Shockwave fix that way...

Still, this Masterpiece version is a damn fine looking toy, and quite tempting...

Yeah, I considered that one, but it just didn't do it for me.

A little while back, I dug Alternaters Shockblast out of storage and threw him into my Classics collection as a placeholder. He works okay:



...although he does stick out a little bit in alt mode.

Still, someday I want a proper one for that shelf. I seem to recall that a Legends Class one is on the way, and unless he sucks I'll likely pick him up, but a Legends Class one can never be the main one for that character in my collection.

Give me a proper Shockwave, a Buzzsaw and maybe a better Lazerbeak, and the final Insecticon, and that shelf can be complete!

Now I'm so glad I never got Quakewave so I can get the Masterpiece figure instead for cheaper

Sadly, I must confirm that. I do always feel a bit off about that, given how anti-bootleg I usually am. But it helps knowing that they are of utter crap quality. One even broke once while transforming it!



So in a way, owning them is itself punishment for owning them.

I made damn sure to stay with official toys for the main six seekers, though. Even when for many years it seemed three of them were doomed to remain cost prohibitive con exclusives, I never once considered going bootleg for them!

I'm looking forward for him to come out so I can set it side-by-side with my KO G1.

Looking at those pics I have to wonder, what makes him a Masterpiece exactly?

To me it looks like they could just make him in a Deluxe and sell him in the Generations line.

Oh, okay then. Must have been some muddled memories mixed with logic that confused me.

Well, I recall that Pat Lee ditched the back pack in DW. But the hose and backpack are Shockey's signature.

Really don't like that clear, non-purple hexagonal window on his chest.

Was hoping for it to look like this:

I think the chest is clear for the light gimmick.

Then it's gonna look really weird with all that extra tech detail inside (which Shockwave did not have in the show, btw).

Those feet are still way too narrow. The chest bothers me a bit as well, but I can forgive it. Easier than the feet.

And Burn, I also think he's just a bit too simple, but that's just going by the photos. Let's wait until he's actually in hand, or at least we see a video review, shall we?

Why is being simple so bad? Both MP Grimlock and Star Saber are fairly simple and everyone that has Star Saber seems to love him and the only complaint you hear about Grimlock is his size. There's not really too much to Shockwave's transformation to begin with. The only thing I would really have changed on him is making the barrel slide into the backpack instead of the backpack sliding over it.

I didn't say it was bad. It's still a damn good looking Shockwave figure. But there's a certain quality to be met when it comes to being labeled as a Masterpiece, and we don't know yet if the figure meets that or not. Just because he's called a Masterpiece, doesn't make it so.

...he's too big for deluxe; maybe a large voyager, or small leader class. I'm cool with this being MP though; it is very g1 accurate.
