Hasbro Announces Its Newest Sustainable Packaging Initiative; Company to Improve Product-to-Packaging Ratios for Range of Global Brands

Effort will reduce environmental impacts by minimizing material used

PAWTUCKET, R.I.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Global branded play leader Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ: HAS) today announced plans to reduce materials used in product packaging for many of its highly popular global brands, including MY LITTLE PONY, NERF and PLAY-DOH. This new initiative will result in an approximate 15 percent improvement in the average product-to-package ratio of brands and products included in the initiative, with retail availability of Hasbro products in the more environmentally-efficient packaging beginning this year.

Over the next two years, retailers and consumers will begin to see an even broader range of packaging efficiencies put in place, including redesigned disposable boxes and blister packs that use less material. As an example, a more efficient package design for the 2013 MY LITTLE PONY assortment pack is expected to reduce the size of shipping containers by 20 percent, creating transportation efficiencies.

Packaging that serves the dual purpose of long-term storage, such as game boxes, is not included in the initiative.

"Improving Hasbro's product-to-package ratio underscores our long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability," said Duncan Billing, Hasbro's Global Chief Development Officer. "This initiative is designed to streamline our manufacturing processes and reduces our use of natural resources, providing consumers with more manageable and environmentally responsible packaging for our products."

Reducing total packaging size is the most recent effort in a series of sustainable packaging initiatives by Hasbro, all of which are designed to minimize the environmental impact, including:
•Phase-out of PVC in packaging: In 2011, Hasbro announced plans to eliminate PVC from all new core toy and game packaging beginning in 2013.
•Elimination of wire ties: In 2011, Hasbro replaced all wire ties in its packages with ties made from paper rattan or bamboo mix to reduce environmental impact. The effort eliminated approximately 34,000 miles of wire ties — more than enough to wrap around the circumference of the Earth.
•Increasing recycled content: In 2011, Hasbro achieved its goal to derive at least 75 percent of paper and board packaging from recycled material, or from sources that practice sustainable forest management. By 2015, Hasbro plans to increase that target to 90 percent.
•Responsible paper sourcing policy: Hasbro implemented an aggressive paper sourcing policy in 2011, providing guidelines for suppliers regarding sustainable paper sourcing to help ensure that paper used in Hasbro products aligns with the company's commitment to environmental sustainability. Among the policy's key requirements is the expectation that suppliers will source paper with as much post-consumer recycled content as practical and financially viable. The company has communicated the policy to its suppliers, and has made it a part of its company-wide quality assurance procedures.

In addition to these leading sustainable packaging initiatives, Hasbro is committed to continuous improvement in corporate social responsibility. The company's CSR efforts focus on three key priorities: product safety, manufacturing ethics and environmental sustainability.

In recognition of Hasbro's companywide CSR efforts, the Ethisphere Institute named the company one of the "2012 World's Most Ethical Companies" in March 2012. Hasbro was also included among the 2012 winners of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Climate Leadership Awards, which recognize corporate, organizational and individual leadership in addressing climate change and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

They can reduce the size of the Kre-O boxes by over 50% and still fit all the pieces inside. Most of the box is empty. I guess they feel the bigger than necessary boxes makes the product look bigger so they can justify the high prices.

I'd much rather they work on packaging that doesn't get destroyed somewhere between manufacture and when I buy the figure. The packages for my PRID Ratchet and Arcee were just destroyed, but there was only one of each so I had to go for the smashed to hell ones or go without. Fortunately the figures weren't damaged.

TFP packaging is already noticeably smaller than previous lines, and not just because the toys are smaller. I'm all for reducing waste.

if they could place the weapons for the voyagers in their hands they could really reduce the size of the boxes. also why not attach the weapons to the deluxe vehicles in package? that would trim down the plastic as well.

Give some love to The Netherlands Hasbro, we're sick and tired of not finding TF and Star Wars in stores and at a reasonable price. It all comes from the same damn factory so why can't we get it here.

I don't think the quality of the packaging will be affected. So the MOC/MIB collectors may not panic.
What will be good out of this is Hasbro will save money on Packaging and shipping cost. Maybe the price of the figures will not increase too quickly because of that.

Furtermore, the MOC/MIB collector will surely be pleased to know that their collection will take less wall/shelf space. Same thing in store. So maybe the stores will accept to bring in more toys.

Let's picture related be a thing of the past.

MISB collectors are gonna have a field day with this. PVC is needed to keep plastic lasting for a long time. Without it, probably 6 years before MISB figures becomes loose figures all on their own.

You know if they just make 1/4 of the amount of bumblebees, it will really prevent a lot of waste. Not even make more of the other figures, just make 1/4 less bumblebees, and there you go.

No more plastic twist-ties? Rejoice, for this truly is a glorious day! There shall be dancing in the streets; for too long have our people lived under the oppressive rule of the evil twist-tie! No longer shall we struggle for minutes on end trying to free our action figures from their cardboard prisons, too frightened of scratching the toy to use scissors!

this has nothing to do with the environment(ok maybe a little cause im sure they get a tax break for it) they're main reason for this is so that we dont realize that their stuff is getting smaller just by looking at it in the box. I hope this doesnt effect the MISB collectors, they already screwed us over by replacing the twist ties with rope. Still dont see why they need to tie them down in the boxes anyway, just weave the figure into the platic insert like so many other figure companies do. What i really hope is that they use the money they save on the packaging to make the figures better and make the pricing reasonable again. Getting tired of waiting for a sale or coupon to come around so i dont have to spend an absurd price then take the figure out only to have it break or have 10 stress marks pop up after transforming it twice. But on another note I have a better idea, stop making so many damn bumblebees & primes that'll help save the earth (and whats left of our sanity) right there. Just think of how many bees & primes are sitting in landfills right now cause stores couldnt sell them all. And most importantly just think of all the figures we missed cause bumbleebee & prime were clogging the shelves.

Hasbro is such a caring company!

And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

In an upcoming announcement, Hasbro will explain how in keeping with their commitment to protect the planet, they have been using less plastic and almost no paint in their TF figures so as to lessen environmental impact when the toy breaks on the first transformation and ends up in the local trash dump.

These guys are regular tree huggers! :P
