Since the game doesn't take disguise into account though, that makes the difference semantic.Their forms are different enough to warrant different tactics, which is what's important.
I'm just trying to decide whether I think only canonical pairings should be allowed for Transmetal Alts, we should look for stuff that goes well together, or, if Transmetals are tournament prizes, the winners should pick whatever they want.

Oh, sorry...
I'm not really up to scratch with the whole Beast War era, but I always thought that they didn't have G1-style triplechangers, with three distinct modes. But, if they have something similar, use that. They're probably going to need as much as possible to draw existing players into defecting, in order to balance the factions out more.

that should go for triple changers aswell.
Well of course.
Also, unorthodox candidates for BW Triple Changers -
Alternators Ravage 2 - Land Animal/Car (yes I know the toy doesn't have an anthropomorphic robot mode, but for game purposes, it'd look cool).
Since Ravage turns into a Transmetal (I in Japan, II in the US) cat in the toy line, and a cassette in the show, we could be silly and say that all the cassetticons so far adapted into Predacons (Ravage, Laserbeak, and Buzzsaw) could have beast-mode and a cassette mode (however useful that may end up being.
B'Boom, Transquito, Inferno, Tigerhawk, and TMII Megatron all technically had third modes. Of these, I'd say B'Boom and maybe Tigerhawk should get Triplechanger status.
The Seacons (they were Maximals in Japan right?) were all technically Triplechangers, having weapon modes in addition to crazy looking Beast-modes.
Oh, and are the pre-Earth-Alts (from the IDW comic and Botcon) going to show up as rare Maximal/Predacon Alts? I'll go skim the Planning Forum and see if that was ever mentioned.

I dont remember Inferno having a third mode?...I know Scavenger did.
And what about Tarantulas. He had the Motorcycle mode.

Inferno and transquito both technically had third modes in their directions, but Transquito's sucked, and Inferno's sucked even more. Transquito looked like he was at least designed with the third mode in mind, like B'Boom, but Inferno was more like a funky partially transformed mode.
I think originally, his jet engines were only supposed to be exposed in his third mode, but after finishing it, they realized he looked fine with his jets exposed in robot mode, and thus, his third mode was rendered pointless.

Ahhh ok. I just figured his jets were more like boosters, kinda like G1 decepticons had in either their feet or backs. Least thats how i've always seen em.

If we were sticking to canon then the Autobots and Decepticons should be considered outlaws/rebels for not getting the mandatory upgrade to Maximal/Predacon

It really doesn't, at least, not to any particular canon.
What's your point?

Oh, duh.
Anyway, I didn't say that so much out of interest of keeping it canon, as out of interest of making the pairings look good.
With G1 triplechangers, as has already been stated, they looked completely different in both modes, so you can just pick any two altmodes and say its an Autobot/Decepticon Triplechanger.
Transmetals of course had a very different aesthetic, and coming up with noncanon combinations that will stay true to that theme is a little tough.
On the other hand, I don't know how necessary it is to be concerned about it. Transmetals/Triplechangers are going to be quite rare - rare enough I think we could stick to canon alts without concern of running short. And even if they were in large numbers, I think the number of Transmetals actually is greater than the number of other multichangers. Though one could take G1 Quickswitch, G1 Sixshot, and RID Megatron/Galvatron, and get multiple triplechangers out of them...
I want to see how these lay out as is...
(note that for simplicity I'm using the v1 Alt Classes)
Autobot - 9 (Not including Multichangers)
(G1) Springer - Helicoptor/Car
(G1) Sandstorm - Helicoptor/Car
(G1) Broadside - Jet/Ship
(G1) Metroplex - Base/Tank
(G1) Fortress Maximus - Base/Spaceship(?)
(G1) Tracks - Racecar/Airplane
(G1) Hotspot - Firetruck/Base
(G1) Scattershot - Jet/Weapon
(Cy) Optimus - Firetruck/Airplane
Decepticon - 14 (Not including Multichangers)
(G1) Blitzwing - Tank/Jet
(G1) Astrotrain - Spaceshipe/Train
(G1) Octane - Airplane/Semi
(G1) Apeface - Land Animal/Jet
(G1) Snapdragon - Land Animal/Jet
(G1) Motormaster - Semi/Base
(G1) Onslaught - 'Tank'/Base
(G1) Seacons - Sea Creatures/Weapons
(G1) Trypticon - Dinosaur/Base (?)
(2008) Blitzwing - Tank/Jet
(Cs) Astrotrain - Spaceship/Train
(U2) Octane - Airplane/Truck
(Cy) Megatron - Car/Jet
(En) Shockblast - Tank/Spaceship
(En) Mirage - Ship/Spaceship (That's a stretch...)
Maximals - 8 (Not including Optimal)
B'Boom - Land Animal/Weapon
Primal - Land Animal/Hovercraft
Rattrap - Small Animal/Racecar
Cheetor - Land Animal/Airplane
Depthcharge - Sea Creature/Spaceship
Rhinox - Land Animal/Tank
Airrazor - Air Animal/Jet
Tigerhawk - Air Animal/Tank
Predacons - 7
Transquito - Insect/Weapon
Megatron - Dinosaur/Hovercraft (wouldn't look good though)
Tarantulas - Arachnid/Motorcycle
Rampage - Sea Creature/Tank
Waspinator - Insect/Jet
Terrorsaur - Air Animal/Jet
Scavenger - Insect/Tank
So we have at least 6 gimmes for each faction, which is probably more than we'll ever get.
Still, I'm sure a lot of us would rather make our own, yes?
None of my Transmetal characters have analogs there.
But also there's still the concern of keeping them balanced... Would certain Alt combinations be 'broken'? But to discuss that we'd have to go into the details of v2 Altclasses and Tactics, which isn't my territory...
Odd... The board won't let me post Fire Truck as a single word...

That's what I guessed. Silly censor program.
Chaoslock - good call on Perceptor, but as far as I know, Galvatron's two altmodes would be the same class for game purposes. Without knowing the final details of the v2 Triplechangers, I don't know that there would be a point to that.
UC - Jet/Skyfire's gerwalk mode would be a second robot mode, like Counterpunch.
