So will there be tactical advantages in the battlefield in the game itself? If a map is being used and topology is included, does that mean for example, that you can gain the high ground and use it to your advantage?

the map is on a global scale, not battlefield scale, there wil advantages to controling sectors on the global map
there is as yet no plans for enviromental effects in missions themselves yet.
