I've been having similar feelings, but ultimately decided not to dive back into MOTU. I have all the animated series on DVD, and all the Dark Horse collector books featuring every aspect of the franchise from animation, to comics, to toys, and I'm ok with that.
Truth be told, I had way more MOTU than Transformers as a kid as well. Everything from 82-85 and about half of what came out in 86 and 87.
I grew more into Transformers as time went on, but that was mostly because of the animated series. I had less than 10 original Transformers toys as a kid, but started collecting them more right out of high school during G2 and BW. I did have the 2 "Big Ones" that were my favorites though. (Omega Supreme, and Fortress Maximus)
I saw almost 2 full waves of MOTU Origins between my closest walmart and target recently and was
very much tempted to get them. However... I'm kind of an "all or nothing" guy. Even some of the first few wave figures that are not He-Man or Skeletor can fetch a hefty price on the secondary market. Also there is the fear that, although wave 8 is coming out soon, how long will the Origins line last? With items going on clearance, I don't think they will get to every character from the original MOTU.
Then I started looking on eBay at original MOTU. Surprisingly, many of the 82-84 characters can be obtained loose and complete for pretty reasonable prices, but the 86-87 characters are insanely expensive, even loose.
I find it interesting... Genuinely, when you look at MOTU from 82-87, there were never really any Bad Toys IMHO. The characters coming out in 1987 were just as cool, to me at least, as the first waves. It was just mismanagement by Mattel, and perhaps kids like me that grew out of it, or shifted focus that caused it all to end (well, that and the Movie bombing)
Whereas with Transformers, most fans consider 84-86 to be the "Best" years, but I'd throw 1987 in there as well. It was basically in 1988 that there was a marked decline of quality of the toys, seeing as there was much less involvement with Takara. Piranacon was really the only toy from 1988 I thought was cool even as a kid. Ultimately by 1991 and with Action Masters , it was dead.
