No, not G1. Look at Armada, Energon, Cybertron... All those have designs in their character every bit as identifiable to the Transformers brand as G1 ever did.

..and guess what they all had in common?

THEY WERE CARTOONS.

No matter what you say, you still come off like a GeeWunner.

Bay said it himself, this isn't your dad's Transformers.

Either enjoy the movie like the rest of us or get over it

Wow, I sound like a conformist

All the more reason why people would have loved seeing a accurate LIVE ACTION interprentation as it has never been done nor seen before.

Cartoon characters in live action series are done all the time. Just rent who framed roger rabbit...

they just don't come off looking real.

I wasn't trying to be offensive to you, its just the way you have come off.

I just don't see the blocky designs really working in a live action setting.

Wouldn't their movement be really constricted by those designs?

Even after seeing what I'm dubbing a **** masterpiece, people are still complaining about the designs? And not them in general, the lack of 24 seven "face plates", and flames (red and blue ones, mind you).

How come every other fan base can grow, adapt, and enjoy all the new iterations of their favorite, 30 year old series (Gundam, Tokusatsu, Sentai), but American Transformers fans have to have everything a replica of G1? Even the slightest deviation from G1 causes mass histaria. Seriously, even G1 looks bad now, and this is coming from someone who grew up on that ****.

These designs were awesome, and still had a **** load of personality. Can't wait till whatever eventual Directors Cut/Special Edition comes out.

EDIT: Seriously, let at least one damn facet of the Transformers line evolve. You still have most of the comics, and the damn cartoons to slob over non-removable face plates.

This is almost as bad as "TRUCK NOT MONKEY". Seriously, wtf.

In short: No. These designs sucked so much metal ass. Simply horrible.
Of course they could have made designs that actually resembled some sort of transformer and make it look real and kickass. But then this movie wouldn't be utterly garbage.

I don't think the designs were all that bad. Could've been better without so much shaky cam. It blurred their designs together at times.

My personal preference though would've been to have each one of them designed with the originals in mind, like it was done with Optimus and Bumblebee.. You could tell it was them by their designs. Everyone else were generic bots. All they really needed to do was tweak a couple of things here and there (like coloration, facial structure, and possibly weaponry) and they could've been the same aesthetic and still be familiar.

Now as far as the "No Mass Shifting" mantra for their explanation of Megatron and lack of Soundwave, please explain what happened to the AllSpark? I guess we're supposed to believe it was a hollow cube?

They made decent and interesting toys, so they served their purpose. If people have a hankering for G1 there's alot of G1 stuff already out there, so its nice to have something so different yet still very much 'Transformers'.

The designs were necessary in my opinion, anything that made a Live-Action TF had.

I think they did an excellent job ;)^

can anybody really tell me that the transformation sequences made any sense?
I remember when you used to be able to tell how a transformer turned into it's alt mode just by looking at it's robot mode.

also, transformers don't eat, thus should not need teeth.
Why did megatron and starscream have organic looking teeth?
not very realistic Mr. Bay...........

if u say that the only thing transformers need is eyes, its not like they have vocal cords and there for need a mouth the comunicate, why not just a speaker, the heads would look like a box with eyes. if megs was running at me i think i would be scared of the ones with the fangs, its purely for effect, just like why they used to where scary masks into battle, to promote fear, and big sharp teeth do that pretty well

as for the design i reckon they did pretty good, its how i would picture a highly advance sentient alien race, adapting the form of human vehicles, i mean this isnt the 80's, todays robots look blocky if not better than the g1 transformers, so a robotic race, millions of years in adavanc of us would look pretty advance. and the g1 design just dont account for mass shifting and all that. if bay had listend to the fans in terms of the designs the movie would have looked ****. leave it to the artists, if u think you could do better, go ahead, personally i think they look f***ing awsome

I would've preferred it if the designs were like the newer G1 transformers, like Kup and Cyclonus. They were more organic than the originals but didn't look like junk art.

to put it simply: G1 designs worked in 1984, but would NOT work in 2007

That Michael Smith animation is pure cartoon unfortuantely. I mean it's still quite the animation, looks good, but..

A) Looks like a cartoon, especially to those of us who know the cartoon

B) THe General public (who they are targetting) won't consider those types of animations realistic looking.

Problem is, there just isn't much area on those types of bots to look realistic. THough IDW has done an amazing job making htem look better, but still, I guess this argument is really unncessary until someone makes an equivilent version of the movie with cartoon styled bots, then we would be able to tell for real I suppose

Oh, right. P.s.

"After all, I have seen many people say that Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime MADE the movie and this concept seems to be right along those same lines."

He did not make the movie. Yes, all us nerds love him being there, but I'm pretty sure most of the people going to this movie are not going to it because Cullen is voicing it.. lol (assuming thats what those "many people" mean)

So, in your opinion, does that mean a good chunk of the Beast Wars cast did not look like Transformers? (The spider-bots, Transmetal 1 Cheetor with those hands, Dinobot, etc)

I believe I have seen teeth in a lot of Transformers series. Perhaps not so much in G1, as well, that would just be extra drawing to have to do to already very basic animation, but Ravage had teeth!

Off the top of my head, RID, Beast Wars, had teeth.

My only problem with the designs was how they made it more difficult to figure out what was going on. When one of them say, tackled another. It became almost impossible to distinguish what happend from there. Because the transformed robots have so much silver in their designs.

When Hot Rod Transforms, it is pretty clear that you are looking at Hot Rod, his bright orange is everywhere.

Silver? Who's silver besides Megatron, Jazz, and Frenzy? Blackout's gray, Barricade is white and black, Ironhide is black, Ratchet and Bumblebee are yellow, Prime is red and blue, Brawl is green-gray, so is Bonecrusher.

I like the way that they made it, so that these designs could transform while still moving in alt. mode and I do agree that it would have not looked so good with the exact original designs from G1 doing it, but they didn't have to go so freaking out there with Megs and SS and so forth. All of Megs' spikes and edges and SS's looking like a monkey could have been gotten rid of and I think everyone (on both sides of the design debate) would be happy and content.
