I would have loved to have seen the end portrayed in novel. Megatron would have had some actual character development (thus making him markedly better than every other Transformer in the movie franchise), and Prime would finally have actually displayed some of the kindness/mercy/dislike of violence/goodness that he used to be known for. In the novel, he says "I'm not like you, Megatron" and lets him live to return to Cybertron and rebuild. In the movie, he pretty much shows that he is actually kinda worse than Megatron by murdering him in cold blood when his guard's down.
I had a few problems, namely the ending. The book had a much better ending. Then again, in the book Megatron was built up as a hero a bit more. Also, Shockwave wasn't given anything to do except be another casualty.

THIS.
I just found out about this in another thread, HORRIBLE choice.
Gah, I was really looking forward to the rumors of Megatron...NOT DYING...
This was just horrible and kinda ruins Prime's character.
Megatron's far higher on my list now...Prime sunk a bit.

Good, I thought I was the only one a bit perturbed over this. How's Spielberg gonna pull the 4th one off? No one say Galvatron....
Hero wrote:I can only laugh at the people that say Optimus should've spared Megatron. Sorry, this isn't the G1 cartoon where nobody ever dies. Everything Megatron did throughout the three Bayformer movies had real consequences and had humans and Autobots dying and one could make the argument that the only reason Sentinel betrayed was because Megatron gave him a devil deal. Both of those characters deserved what they got.

It wasn't really a case of sparing Megatron. Megatron could've killed Optimus had he wanted to, but didn't and offered the truce.

Unfortunately, you're looking for a dramatic film in an action film. With a cast of characters so large and a heavy focus on explosions et al something has to give. Unfortunately, you're probably in a minority when it comes to character development being high on the list. Let's be honest, no one is going to this looking for nominations for Best Screenplay. It's a summer blockbuster. Whether or not you're complaints are valid (and having not seen the film I cannot say, though I have an inkling) I think they are misdirected.
