Unfortunately, you're looking for a dramatic film in an action film. With a cast of characters so large and a heavy focus on explosions et al something has to give. Unfortunately, you're probably in a minority when it comes to character development being high on the list. Let's be honest, no one is going to this looking for nominations for Best Screenplay. It's a summer blockbuster. Whether or not you're complaints are valid (and having not seen the film I cannot say, though I have an inkling) I think they are misdirected.

But do you see that if it had that drama AND the action, it would be altogether a better movie?

I saw it tonight and I enjoyed it but there were many moments that were rather pointless. If that time would have been used to further develop the Autobots', and especially Prime's, motivation it would have made more of an impact as a film.

I see it, which is why I'm not gonna see it (so to speak). But what should be rarely translates to what is. Unfortunately, the world is too full of people who think "explosions… cool! plot… boring…" Fortunately, for them, Michael Bay will continue to make movies, if not TF ones (fortunately, hopefully, for us).

I don't always watch movies, but when I do, I like Micheal Bay.

Not what I meant, I was moreso referring to the term real Megatron, what do you consider the real one?
Though yeah, he should have killed her being crazy as he is.

Real Megatron?

That's what I said.

Real Megatron.

Leader of the Decepticons, transforms into a MF'ng weapon of mass destruction, and is NOT Optimus Prime's "brother" in some bullshit series of movies that basically takes a quarter century of wide-ranging, yet relatively consistent, TF history and throws it out the window to make a few bucks. Congrats to all who were involved and made money. You should all be ashamed of yourselves. They might be good "action flicks" with giant robots and eye candy and explosions and who am I to deny the masses that, but they are not Transformers movies in my book.

Same way the real Batman doesn't wear a supposedly bullet-proof rubber suit.

But you know what they say about opinions…

They work for me. It's not like they're any less ridiculous than the original cartoon, the exposition filled Marvel comics, RiD's camp, AEC's pokeformers, or Animated's Chin-scape.

Pretty much all Transformers fiction is awful writing and/or storytelling when it comes down to it. We all just put on our own special brand of blinders and/or suspended disbelief because we like Transformers.

I love Armada. It's a terrible story. It's not as bad as some people say, but it's not great by any stretch of the imagination.

I'm not advocating for the film franchises. They're not great story telling devices. That's clear.

Like all other TF visual media, they are viewing experiences. That and nothing more. I just wish that some people (not you necessarily) would drop the pretension that somehow Transformers can be fine wine when no matter what glass you serve it in, it's beer.

Agreed, and no offense taken. BTW, I personally hate wine (as waste of perfectly good grape juice IMO). ;)

It's all subjective and if we all liked the same thing creativity would essentially be non-existent.

Tow that corporate line!

I think since 1984 fans have proved that Transformers is what they think it is. When it comes down to it Transformers is like religion (or its lack) in that at its core it is different for each individual.

SPOILERS
I saw it last night and the movie really has some mixed emotions for me. want to love it, but there's also something holding me back from liking it significantly more than ROTF. I do like it more than ROTF, but not as much as I had hoped. I loved ROTF too, it's just that...in short:

I liked the first half of ROTF more than DOTM. Honestly, just ask yourself: Was the college scene in ROTF really as bad as the job scenes in DOTM? I wasn't impressed in the slightest. The movie opens off awesome, with Cybertron and the moon crashing. And a recreation of the space race (The opening scene reminded me of Watchmen. I never actually saw that movie ((I want to)) but I have seen the intro). Then we cut to the Sam and Carly scene then the whole movie goes down hill faster than ROTF did to me. And it stays this way until halfway through, then everything gets big and explosioney.

When the highway scene started I said to myself, "This is it! The forrest battle of DOTM, the thing that gets everything going!" and it was. But when I saw Ironhide get shot in the back by Sentinel, I screamed in the theater. I liked Ironhide. Then he started to disintegrate, and it was hard for me to watch. Damn you Sentinel!!! And the acting in this movie was a lot better too. I honestly hadn't expected that. ROTF had some believable moments towards the end, but DOTM's whole second half seemed emotional.

The score isn't nearly as memorable, neither are the scenes in DOTM compared to the first 2. I only remember one song from the score in the movie.

I also enjoyed seeing Sam's evolved character. In the first movie, he started off as an innocent kid trying to find money to buy a car. Then in ROTF he was kind of in the denial "want to be normal" state. Then finally in DOTM taking another human being's life for the sake of earth!

Also, was it just my theater or did the screen constantly cut to black? The scenes I remember doing this are when Laserbeak transformed into that small, pink Bumblebee to get that little girl (pedophile TF) to bring her in the house to assassinate her dad. (That scene was awesome BTW). I remember the scene kept cutting to black and I was trying to figure out WTF was going on. Also Simmon's intro scene. And another time when the Decepticon invasion began.

There were a few things i wanted to see from the novel but were not in the final film. Regardles i thouroughly enjoyed it.

- the dreads becoming stowawys on the xanthium
- mirage's death
- skids and mudflaps death scene

On a couple of side notes, a couple of scenes that i thought would be cut were in the movie and were some of my favorite scenes, like brains chewing on screws ( i really thought it was funny in the book) and the home invasion with laserbeak which was very very creepy. Also great to see barricade back in some fashion. I wish they showed More of the big cloverfield looking constructicon though (cant wait to see his concept drawings). Also the superfund truck was used to transport the pillars to chicago but i was unclear if it was a decepticon itself. Nearly all the old decepticon models were re used as cannon fodder In the end; brawl, sideways, scrapper, long haul as well. Long haul was also re used in the DC with some cosmetic changes as the garbage truck bot.

And i still feel the same. Megatron and sentinal both got what they deserved.

THEY FINALLY GOT IT RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay- after seeing some early negative reviews start coming in I was a bit skeptical. I feared my hopes were going to get squashed...again. That wasn't the case- in fact they were completely EXCEEDED beyond expectations. DOTM is in my opinion about as close as we're ever going to get to a "Transformers" movie. Yes, some of the scenes are goofy but let's think about some of the G1 episodes. I can think of quite a few goofy human characters in G1. Also in DOTM there was a Transformer on screen for about 75-80% of the time, if not more. They were full blown interactive characters rather than background pictures and lifeless robots. The CGI has gotten so that it really does blend the humans and bots so well that I believed. It really is a stunning feat of technology and movie-making to pull this off. This what we've waiting for Transformers fans. Don't believe the bad reviews- nothing shocked me like the crass humor in the first two- nothing nearly as vulgar as ROTF. This is an epic Transformers movie and finally, finally after three tries they got it right. Forget the first two- this one was wonderful. I nearly cried during a couple scenes okay, it was THAT good. I applaud everyone involved in making this film and making a Transformers fan's dreams finally come true. I am still stunned. Oh and do yourself a favor and spend the extra few bucks on the 3D- you won't regret it.

This was the best movie I've ever seen! It had so many G1 elements like Optimus Primes trailer and axe! I almost wet myself when i saw the matrix come out of his chest!!The battle between Sentinal and Optimus was long and amazing unlike the battle with the fallen in ROTF which only lasted a minute. Lastly, MEGATRON STOLE OPTIMUS'S JOB!!! HE STOLE SENTINALS FACE!!! WHEN MEGATRON SAVES OPTIMUS FROM SENTINAL, HE HITS HIM IN THE FACE, AND IT COMES FLYING AT YOUR FACE!!!

Well, saw it last night. Pretty good, way better than the crap fest that was ROTF. Gonna keep it short and sweet:

What I liked:

Overall Story, expected to be annoyed by the tie in the space, but it was good.
Optimus Prime, yeah he's brutal so much so that it's outta character, but he's been pushed to the brink.
Megatron, He's really the sympathetic villain here, from what's told.
The Wreckers, loved these guys, needed more screen time.
Sentinel Prime, loved his portrayal, not so much a villain, but more of a do anything to save Cybertron type.
Seeing Cybertron, in the beginning of the movie the being pulled into Earths orbit. Very Ultimate Doom.
The Chicago scene/ Invasion, purely amazing.
Dylan, yeah I like a human character in these movies, who knew. He was such a bastard.
The bot on bot violence, it's a war, and now it looked like one.
The toned down involvement of the military, they weren't all over this movie like the first two.
Sam's boss, freakin' awesome, Malcovich is a genius

Disliked/Disappointments:

Shockwave, what a waste.
Carly, every scene she was in I cringed. Horrible actress, horrible character.
Not enough screen time for Megatron
Starcreams death at Sam's hands, LAME.
Simmons, I like John Tuturro, but wow was he annoying in this.
Sam's parents, f@#$ them, really. Such a waste of character and screen time.
Sam's job hunt, waste of time. Really boring and unfunny.
The guy at Sam's job who told him about the Cons, ugh stupid scenes, and the humor was typical Bay toilet humor.
Not enough character development for the TF's.
Way too long, coulda trimmed an hour of useless crap out of this movie(the Sam/Carly love relationship scenes to start with).
The wing suit scene. Really? It was so bad.

Not bad all in all.

***SPOILERS AHEAD***

I don't understand why everyone says the motivation for Prime's behavior at the end of the movie isn't adequately explained. Megatron is his mortal enemy and was responsible for the deaths of thousands of his fellow Cybertronians. Not to mention human lives. He even managed to KILL OPTIMUS PRIME in ROTF. Why should Prime have given him any quarter? Imagine if Osama Bin Laden had asked for a truce. Also, he just had his mentor turn heel on him, so to speak, and in the process, kill one of his best friends. I'd say that would drain the compassion level of anyone, even Optimus.

To be honest with you, Optimus exhibited virtue and honor by not leaving the damn planet to the Decepticons in the first place. I mean, Sentinel was right - the humans kind of treated the Autobots like **** in ROTF (decommissioning NEST and holding the Bots hostage on the way to Diego Garcia) and even somewhat in DOTM.

As far as I'm concerned, the movie had it's flaws (i.e. Megatron's reason for coming to Earth in TF1 was to obtain the Allspark, yet in DOTM it was to rendezvous with Sentinel to activate the Space Bridge...wtf?....Shockwave doing pretty much nothing but **** up Chernobyl some more and walking through Chicago shooting at ****...) but they were pretty minor. I thought the storyline was much better thought out this time, and the action was incredible. Patrick Dempsey's role was a pleasant surprise, as I had no idea he'd have the role that he did. Leonard Nimoy was perfect as the voice of Sentinel Prime...sadly, this might be the last time we see Nimoy in any on-screen role but if it was, this was the way to go out.

All in all, thumbs way up for this one. I'm definitely going to go see it again.

To much debate. Came to see a summer block buster with lots of explosions, Car chases, a bit of humor, pretty girl and a lot of robots kicking ass and taking names. Mission accomplished. As far as Prime's take no prisoners attitude and resolve, loved it. Considering the circumstances including his long lost leader becoming a turncoat, I feel it was very fitting. It's when a leader like Prime has been the Cybertronian equivalent of Martin Luther King Jr for the last 25 years +, we see that got him martyrdom in the '86 animated movie but every now and then we need a leader during a time of war to open a good 'ol can of Malcolm X whoop ass. Bravo Bay. Two thumbs way up!

Likes:

Optimus with the jet pack. Very awesome.
Humans worked with the Decepticons. A very cool idea.
That it was a thousand times better than the garbage that was ROTF. It was better than the first one too.
The special effects. I don't even need to put an unnecessary adjective here.
Cybertron's honeycomb-like design. Awesome!
Malkovitch's character throwing that lady's coffe cup away (even though I didn't like his character). That was funny!
Rosie Huntington-Whitley. :x

Dislikes:

Ironhide dies at the hands of Sentinel Prime. :BOOM: That secene disturbed me emotionally.
Shockwave did nothing at all.
Sam killing Starscream. Stupid.
John Malkovitch's character. He was just plain retarded.

All in all, 4.5 stars out of five.

I thought it improved on ROTF, but still not as good as the first. Shockwave was absolutely useless. He did nothing but just stand there and tell Driller what to do. Total waste of the character. I thought Rosie Huntington Whitely did good, but she needed more character development. Sentinel was awesome, but I was really sad when I realized he was a traitor. Wish Bay wouldn't have done that. The final battle with Optimus, Sentinel, and Megatron was AWESOME but I wish they would've atleast shown us if Optimus ever got his arm back. Overall, it was good. Better than ROTF, but still not quite what the 1st was.

So I just got back from seeing DOTM. I first have to say WOW! That was awesome. Honestly you could cut out ROTF and just make this the true sequel to the first movie, that would be fine with me. I didn't hate ROTF, but DOTM did everything I expected ROTF to do and better. SPOILERS TO FOLLOW.. Though if you haven't been spoiled after 26 pages then you are just awesome.

Story- Overall a cool story. Lots of twists. I loved the Decepticons forcing humans to work for them thing. That seems like something they should have been doing since movie 1. Sam's story seemed fine to me. I know alot of fans don't like the human moments as they are "filler" of sorts, But I feel they help add a human face to the movie. Not everyone is gonna relate to a 50 foot cybertronian. Of course it is possible to make us relate to them better, but Bay isn't that good of a story teller honestly. Good story, I enjoyed it.

Humans- Overall I didn't find any of the humans bad or annoying. Sam was way more relatable than he was in ROTF. Seems like we got the first movie Sam back. Also I like that he was actually able to fight back for once instead of running away. He's got his power glove ("Its so bad!")now, which was cool, even if he did "kill" Starscream. Carly seemed to fit in with everyone fine. I honestly don't think she is a bad actress at all. But maybe I'm blinded by her sexiness. She seemed to have a better chemistry with Sam than Mikaela ever did. Though I'll agree with others that they kinda tossed Mikaela aside like yesterday's trash. Epps, Simmons and all the other returning cast were fine. Again there are alot of side characters, but this is a Bay film and thats kinda his "thing" besides explosions of course. I didn't find it hard to keep track of any of them. I also didn't worry that any of them were gonna die. Honestly unless you are a Decepticon, some random civilian,a red shirt military dude or a side character Autobot you are safe in this film for the most part anyway. Patrick Dempsy's character I didn't understand really. Sure I understand that when he is initially serving the Decepticons he wants to help so he can be in their good graces, But why once the Autobots start kicking ass and the beacon is turned off does he try and reactivate it? Is he that much of a Jerk that he wants to doom mankind? It just seemed a little fishy to me, its like Bay wanted there to be a human enemy to show that humans are just as evil and corruptible as deceptions. Whatever, he gets whats coming to him in the end so it works. Also "Mr.Chao" from the Hangover surprised me. I didn't expect him. Crazy as ever. Francis McDormind was a much better replacement for Galloway from ROTF, so Kudos. Really nothing wrong with the human cast in this movie. Also no Leo is a good thing.

Transformers-
I loved the fact that we can actually see the Bots and Cons having conversations with each other. Also I liked that for the most part you can see the fights. That irked me to no end in the first two movies where you'd have a awesome fight scene and they'd keep showing you Sam or some other random human underfoot instead of the fight. I know its to show their point of view or whatever, but I want to see the fight. Optimus seemed to still be Badass which is always cool. He still seems a bit colder than his G1 self, but I guess that was to be expected. Over the course of three movies he was driven to desperation. By the end of this conflict He just wanted to finish it. Although I would have preferred that Sentinel Prime fake surrendering and Optimus naively accept and then when Sentinel attacks instead of surrendering, Optimus kills him. Seemed kinda barbaric for Optimus to just blast him in the head, the guy was his teacher and father figure after all. I know he nearly enslaved a race and wiped out a planet, but still its not that easy to just kill someone like that especially when they mean that much to you. The way they did it works yes, I'd just have done it differently is all.
Sentinel Prime was awesome. I loved Nimoy doing the voice. I kinda figured he'd betray them all (got spoiled by this site on that fact sadly, My fault for looking at spoilers), although I never thought he'd kill Ironhide. Such a shame. I half expected Megatron to kill Ironhide honestly from what happened in the video game (Ironhide wounds Megs and as Megs flees he says "He'll pay for that"). Overall I think he was a cool character. He was driven to madness in the vein effort to save his planet.
Bumblebee, Sideswipe, Ratchet, Ironhide and Mirage (not calling him Dino) where all really awesome. Nice to see Ratchet and Sideswipe get some screen time. I liked the Wreckers, they were cool (made me want to shop at Target). Brains and Wheelie were fine, didn't bother me at all. They kinda reminded me of Shaggy and Scooby, with their screw ups somehow saving the day. Q or Wheeljack (film credits him as both) was kinda odd. He seemed like the Jolt of the group, Speaking of which.. what happened to Jolt?
I loved Soundwave in this. His posing as Carly's car was awesome. I nearly fangasmed when he transformed, even though I knew it was him the whole time. He just seemed downright evil which suits him very well. I also don't mind the Dr. Claw voice, it makes him sound intimidating, cold and calculating all at the same time.
Laserbeak was cool, though kinda brutal. Posing as a kids playmate then killing her family and probably her too? Creepy. Also when he spoke I though of Iago from Aladdin.
Awesome to see Barricade. I cheered to myself when I saw him. Shame he dies shortly after. I like how he seems to still be cheesed off at Bumblebee.
I also noticed Scrapper and Long Haul (I think) in the background. Also there was a Con who looked an awful lot like the Cloverfeild monster, or I though it did.
The Wreckers had a cool scene. Interesting to see that those Ravage like panthers with Dreads are part of the Dreads. I just thought the game made them up.
Starscream was kinda iffy in this. He seemed very much like a coward. Even though Sam Power gloved him to death, I doubt he is dead. I'm sure the Screamer Fangirls are upset to see him "die", especially to a puny fleshling. Also Air Commander Starscream needs to stop spitting when he talks. I love him, he is one of my favorite characters in all universes, but that's just rude.
Megatron seemed to again take a step back and let some other guy do the bad things while he watched. I like his new mode, hopefully we get a leader of that. Also I'm surprised they didn't squeeze a battle between him and Optimus in there. Didn't have to be long. Makes Optimus seem like a jerk when he tomahawk'd Megatron in the head when the guy is trying to surrender. Knowing Megatron though' he'd have stabbed Optimus in the back again and killed him. I guess you can't blame Optimus for chopping his head off.
Shockwave seemed to be a waste. Don't get me wrong, he did look awesome. I just wanted him to do a little bit more than walk around Chicago and shoot at things. At least he put up one hell of a fight. Maybe he'll survive for movie 4? Hopefully.

Overall it was a awesome summer blockbuster and ties with the first movie as my favorite of the franchise. I need to see it again.

Also if they do make a fourth film with a different director (and probably cast, by the looks of things) I hope they don't reboot the series. I actually like the designs of the characters and would hate to start over again. Though I'd hope that Shia and Rosie would stay on. Maybe if the pay check is big enough. Also I loved hearing LP and then Paramore at the end. Hopefully those bands stay on if there's a fourth movie too.

EDIT- Fixed up some grammar and made it sound less like a 12 year old wrote it. Was in a rush before. I did really like the movie. It ties with Super 8 and X-men First Class as my favorite film this summer.

Motto: "Sine Metu"
Weapon: Fusion Cannon
Still haven't got to see it yet; unfortunately I have to wait until Friday because of school... I can't wait though and couldn't resist looking at the spoilers! Even after reading everyone's opinions on the last few minutes, I'm still a little disappointed about Megatron's fate. I really like the novel ending with him leaving for Cybertron, but having him die in battle would have been ok too. I just think there should have been a final fight between him and Optimus and everyone else or something, and not a surprise attack. And now I do see why Optimus would have been so brutal, he's been through a ton of war and violence, been betrayed by a brother and by a mentor, has lost many friends, and is badly injured. He's basically like a cornered animal at this point, I think.

I'd like to see Spielburg or someone else direct a fourth movie and bring in Unicron. Unicron could resurrect Megatron to Galvatron (or he could stay Megs that's fine too) and the other Decepticons to Cyclonus, Scourge, etc and a new army. It would be cool to set it on Cybertron or in space and only have a very few humans to tag along. Maybe intoduce Ultra Magnus (not Hot Rod) and other favorites we haven't seen. And go from there!

The special effects and action were over the top. Other posters here adequately covered that too.

But as for plotlines, character development and appeasing our Transformer souls, this one was an almost total failure.

Bay, you really managed to ignore the fans and critics... AGAIN. Shockwave is a deeply rich character. Bay gave him one, one word line: "Optimus!" Megatron was a minor, almost unimportant character in the film. Starscream was killed way too easily. Numerous other characters were introduced and then simply disappeared from the story.

TFDOTM was more like a preteen boys Transformers' toy battle in the bedroom brought to life on the screen. But I think I even had a lot more plot and character development when I played Transformers as a kid.

The first two moved me a lot more. This one topped the other two with action and special effects. I am glad Bay is finished with this franchise because I join in with a multitude of TF fans and resoundingly shout "Hands of em now Bay!" Please, can some one with more respect for the TF characters and lore pick up the gauntlet and reboot the Transformers a much better way than Bay failed at?
Unicron was born down the street from me. No joke.

I'm going to see it again before I make a final judgement it was so much to see in a short time. I think it was all the deaths in the film that make it hard to make a clear decison.I dont have to many fan boy moments but Ironhide going out at all let alone like a punk kinda ruined the movie for me a bit.I think this is my biggest issue.
I have defended Bay in the past and enjoyed the other movies alot even ROTF.I'll agree the story needed some work and I would have been willing to cut some of the scenes for more Bot scene time development.A good example maybe I would of cared when Que died if there was more to him before they off'd him.I just think 10-15 minutes of the human scenes being cut and replaced with bot dialog would of made this a amazing movie.I also don't care for the fact that Autobots in past movies are gone without a trace.Even a backaround cameo would of been fine. The naming of Dino and Que is just the fan boy in me complaining I guess it doesnt really matter.Just be cooler to identify characters we know and like.
I know it was a long movie but 5 more minutes at the end would of been nice just to smooth things out a bit since this could be the end of this story arc. Also I like Sam's parents they make me laugh but they felt forced in this movie and should of been in it more just spread out a little.
Finally I have been reading about Optimus attitude and his violet killing and such.Remeber G1 was a cartoon to teach kids values I think lol but it was akids show. This a PG-13 movie you don't win wars being a candy ass.Its kill or be killed.I dont belive in good and evil just two different opinions.Optimus did what he had to do to keep his beliefs intact.Megatron will never stop killing him is really only the option.
I love the past two movies I was really entertained. This is the first time I have any complaints. It could mostly stem from the few deaths in the movie I didn't agree with.It was actioned packed and I felt very over whelmed on everything happening on the screeen.I'll probably see it again this weekend now all the surprise is gone to make a final judgement.Over all it is worth seeing.I really hope they make another instead of a reboot I hate reboots so soon I rather wait a decade for a reboot.
