So I just got back from seeing DOTM. I first have to say WOW! That was awesome. Honestly you could cut out ROTF and just make this the true sequel to the first movie, that would be fine with me. I didn't hate ROTF, but DOTM did everything I expected ROTF to do and better. SPOILERS TO FOLLOW.. Though if you haven't been spoiled after 26 pages then you are just awesome.
Story- Overall a cool story. Lots of twists. I loved the Decepticons forcing humans to work for them thing. That seems like something they should have been doing since movie 1. Sam's story seemed fine to me. I know alot of fans don't like the human moments as they are "filler" of sorts, But I feel they help add a human face to the movie. Not everyone is gonna relate to a 50 foot cybertronian. Of course it is possible to make us relate to them better, but Bay isn't that good of a story teller honestly. Good story, I enjoyed it.
Humans- Overall I didn't find any of the humans bad or annoying. Sam was way more relatable than he was in ROTF. Seems like we got the first movie Sam back. Also I like that he was actually able to fight back for once instead of running away. He's got his power glove ("Its so bad!")now, which was cool, even if he did "kill" Starscream. Carly seemed to fit in with everyone fine. I honestly don't think she is a bad actress at all. But maybe I'm blinded by her sexiness. She seemed to have a better chemistry with Sam than Mikaela ever did. Though I'll agree with others that they kinda tossed Mikaela aside like yesterday's trash. Epps, Simmons and all the other returning cast were fine. Again there are alot of side characters, but this is a Bay film and thats kinda his "thing" besides explosions of course. I didn't find it hard to keep track of any of them. I also didn't worry that any of them were gonna die. Honestly unless you are a Decepticon, some random civilian,a red shirt military dude or a side character Autobot you are safe in this film for the most part anyway. Patrick Dempsy's character I didn't understand really. Sure I understand that when he is initially serving the Decepticons he wants to help so he can be in their good graces, But why once the Autobots start kicking ass and the beacon is turned off does he try and reactivate it? Is he that much of a Jerk that he wants to doom mankind? It just seemed a little fishy to me, its like Bay wanted there to be a human enemy to show that humans are just as evil and corruptible as deceptions. Whatever, he gets whats coming to him in the end so it works. Also "Mr.Chao" from the Hangover surprised me. I didn't expect him. Crazy as ever. Francis McDormind was a much better replacement for Galloway from ROTF, so Kudos. Really nothing wrong with the human cast in this movie. Also no Leo is a good thing.
Transformers-
I loved the fact that we can actually see the Bots and Cons having conversations with each other. Also I liked that for the most part you can see the fights. That irked me to no end in the first two movies where you'd have a awesome fight scene and they'd keep showing you Sam or some other random human underfoot instead of the fight. I know its to show their point of view or whatever, but I want to see the fight. Optimus seemed to still be Badass which is always cool. He still seems a bit colder than his G1 self, but I guess that was to be expected. Over the course of three movies he was driven to desperation. By the end of this conflict He just wanted to finish it. Although I would have preferred that Sentinel Prime fake surrendering and Optimus naively accept and then when Sentinel attacks instead of surrendering, Optimus kills him. Seemed kinda barbaric for Optimus to just blast him in the head, the guy was his teacher and father figure after all. I know he nearly enslaved a race and wiped out a planet, but still its not that easy to just kill someone like that especially when they mean that much to you. The way they did it works yes, I'd just have done it differently is all.
Sentinel Prime was awesome. I loved Nimoy doing the voice. I kinda figured he'd betray them all (got spoiled by this site on that fact sadly, My fault for looking at spoilers), although I never thought he'd kill Ironhide. Such a shame. I half expected Megatron to kill Ironhide honestly from what happened in the video game (Ironhide wounds Megs and as Megs flees he says "He'll pay for that"). Overall I think he was a cool character. He was driven to madness in the vein effort to save his planet.
Bumblebee, Sideswipe, Ratchet, Ironhide and Mirage (not calling him Dino) where all really awesome. Nice to see Ratchet and Sideswipe get some screen time. I liked the Wreckers, they were cool (made me want to shop at Target). Brains and Wheelie were fine, didn't bother me at all. They kinda reminded me of Shaggy and Scooby, with their screw ups somehow saving the day. Q or Wheeljack (film credits him as both) was kinda odd. He seemed like the Jolt of the group, Speaking of which.. what happened to Jolt?
I loved Soundwave in this. His posing as Carly's car was awesome. I nearly fangasmed when he transformed, even though I knew it was him the whole time. He just seemed downright evil which suits him very well. I also don't mind the Dr. Claw voice, it makes him sound intimidating, cold and calculating all at the same time.
Laserbeak was cool, though kinda brutal. Posing as a kids playmate then killing her family and probably her too? Creepy. Also when he spoke I though of Iago from Aladdin.
Awesome to see Barricade. I cheered to myself when I saw him. Shame he dies shortly after. I like how he seems to still be cheesed off at Bumblebee.
I also noticed Scrapper and Long Haul (I think) in the background. Also there was a Con who looked an awful lot like the Cloverfeild monster, or I though it did.
The Wreckers had a cool scene. Interesting to see that those Ravage like panthers with Dreads are part of the Dreads. I just thought the game made them up.
Starscream was kinda iffy in this. He seemed very much like a coward. Even though Sam Power gloved him to death, I doubt he is dead. I'm sure the Screamer Fangirls are upset to see him "die", especially to a puny fleshling. Also Air Commander Starscream needs to stop spitting when he talks. I love him, he is one of my favorite characters in all universes, but that's just rude.
Megatron seemed to again take a step back and let some other guy do the bad things while he watched. I like his new mode, hopefully we get a leader of that. Also I'm surprised they didn't squeeze a battle between him and Optimus in there. Didn't have to be long. Makes Optimus seem like a jerk when he tomahawk'd Megatron in the head when the guy is trying to surrender. Knowing Megatron though' he'd have stabbed Optimus in the back again and killed him. I guess you can't blame Optimus for chopping his head off.
Shockwave seemed to be a waste. Don't get me wrong, he did look awesome. I just wanted him to do a little bit more than walk around Chicago and shoot at things. At least he put up one hell of a fight. Maybe he'll survive for movie 4? Hopefully.
Overall it was a awesome summer blockbuster and ties with the first movie as my favorite of the franchise. I need to see it again.
Also if they do make a fourth film with a different director (and probably cast, by the looks of things) I hope they don't reboot the series. I actually like the designs of the characters and would hate to start over again. Though I'd hope that Shia and Rosie would stay on. Maybe if the pay check is big enough. Also I loved hearing LP and then Paramore at the end. Hopefully those bands stay on if there's a fourth movie too.
EDIT- Fixed up some grammar and made it sound less like a 12 year old wrote it. Was in a rush before. I did really like the movie. It ties with Super 8 and X-men First Class as my favorite film this summer.
