I posted a little bit in the main thread, I should probably elaborate at some point. Short version: it's very very cool, it's going to sell like mad, I'm planning to get as soon as I can. It seems to have a fair amount in common with the Voltron set, conceptually, and I have and love that too. (Currently Voltron is packed up in a tote, but Optimus will become a permanent collection centerpiece on par with Unicron.)

I think I'd get it, but that price-- although fair imo-- is a bit steep for what I'm looking to spend on any toy... That's my one hesitation right now. Well, and OP isn't one of my favorite characters.
But I'm still kicking myself for not getting that Voltron set... So who knows.

Back to SS86, are you getting Spike?

I'm getting that Lego Optimus Prime.

I wish my Spike would show up, but it's not slated to arrive until Sunday. EDIT: Actually says it's coming today. Huh. Go figure.

Yeah, Spike is great for what he is, but the alt-mode is super weak. It looked dumb in the movie though too, so what can you do? I bought two of the Core class Bumblebee and I still haven't decided whether this or those will be my default versions, I'll have to see what they look like as a group. I'm not rigid on scale, but I generally feel like the humans need to be quite small. I bought Diaclone pilot packs for that reason, though also to use with Unicron.

Question for those who have spike in hand, can the helmet be remove fairly easy so that a person could swap the head out?

I may end up getting that Lego set as well... At least as of right now I'm leaning towards it.

Congrats on getting your Spike today!
Could you do me a favor and post a photo or two showing Spike next to Hot Rod, Kup, Acree, and/or Springer?
While I have a few Core class Decepticons, I'm wanting to see Spike next to a couple of those '86 movie characters.

Definitely since neither of the reviews I've seen bothered to put him against other figures in the line.

I hear ya with all of that...
And especially that humans should be really small in comparison to the robots.
But I'm not overly strict about scale either (although I appreciate when it works out accurately!).
Just hoping this Spike is small enough compared to Hot Rod, Arcee, etc.

Of course Amazon changed the date back to the 15th, and the tracking seems to bear it out.

Spike arrived!

From a scale standpoint he's right and he's wrong. In tTF:TM everybody was smaller than they were on the show, but he's also in an exo suit.

IMG_8665.jpg

The funny thing is "Daniel's" suit is bigger, but his head is smaller than Spike's. They both look good, but Spike's exo suit seems more accurate.

IMG_8666.jpg

And, of course, I had to get him in a shot with his best bud. Scale seems right for the movie.

Hey thanks a lot for taking and sharing those.
The scaling is pretty good, although imo Spike is a little tall/large.
I wanted this guy to stand in as my "Daniel", and I think it works well enough.

Thanks again, Sol.

I never got that drone set...

Does anyone think that Core class Rumble will be a small enough figure that they'll include his pile drivers?
Or will his normal little blasters be the only accessories?

I'm very anxious to see what they did for this guy... If his alt mode can't fit into Siege/NF Soundwave, then at least I hope they've made the most of his bot mode with giving us the pile drivers.
But seems like that may be too much for a Core figure's budget.

I think it all depends on whether they make him fit in Soundwave or not. If yes, then he'll be similar to Rewind and not enough on his own to fill in a core slot. My guess is yes to making him fit, yes to the pile drivers, but maybe ditching his guns.

I could see this as well... However, it's not what I want...
Of course it's ideal if a cassette figure can fit into it's leader/owner(?)...
But I personally would never buy any cassetticon just to have it folded up and inside of another figure.
So I'd prefer a Core figure that looks incredible, has good articulation, and in the case of Rumble, at least has the guns that can be plugged into this back.
No pile drivers would be a shame, but I don't want pile drivers for a figure the size of Eject.
Mainly because I don't think those stubby little figures look good at all.
At this point I expect way more from this subline.

Razorbeast88 wrote:Unless they go the route of making a figure that wouldn't fit and drop a ss86 Soundwave in the future at a leader class price point

This would be awesome. Although I don't think it will happen; I'm betting a Soundwave large enough to house a Core class cassette would be way out of scale with what's already been established--
making the torso bigger also means everything else has to be bigger to keep some decent proportions of the Soundwave figure itself.
I'd still buy it though!! Pack-in a Core class Ravage or Buzzsaw, and plenty of others would too.
Also consider--
-He's one of the most popular characters
-This would justify more Core class cassettes
-The NF version was a hard-to-get exclusive
-The Siege version had a turd of an alt mode
-A new Soundwave should be an improvement; being able to house core class-sized figures would be a step up/forward
-This could become the standard for the height of future leader class figures; again, a new leader Megatron or Prime (or any character) should be better than a previous release. I get, larger doesn't automatically mean better. But if we're going to keep paying more, more plastic isn't necessarily a downgrade.

Again, probably not realistic, but definitely a possibility.

Also,
@Sol Magnus,

I'd try having the wheels at Spike's shoulders turned towards the back so they're not up by his head and see if you like that look better.

Which is exactly what happened with Titans Return Leader class Soundwave. He was big enough to house Legends class figures (which is what Core class is now) and he was huge.

While I have mixed feelings on this I kind of agree with you, I mean as kid it was fun "playing" with them and being able to put the cassettes into their player but is anyone really doing that anymore as a "collector"? Still it's a neat feature to stay accurate to the show and toys but it does limit possibilities for those characters in toy form in terms of included required accessories. And you're right the tape version are often stubby looking. Thing is are they enough to warrant the core class price even with accessories? Plus if you remove the transforming aspect since they wouldn't actually need to be inserted into Blaster/SW what's the point/appeal for it being a Transformer then? And if there made to be any bigger than those stubby cassettes they would no longer be in scale, if they ever were in the first place. lol

I think putting these type of bots in core class would make them almost the same size as the smaller Deluxe bots, and when you consider Core Optimus isn't that much shorter than DLX Cliff jumper it kind of poses an issue scale wise if you use that category for the smaller bots like Rumble. Having said that it always appeared that Rumble wasn't that much smaller than Bee and CJ etc. and the current tape version from Legends as well as the recent Eject is definitely on the tiny side next to those two. Honestly I was a bit underwhelmed with Eject as he doesn't have any definable fists, though maybe it's due to translucent plastic. IDK

So that's why I kind of agree but am also torn on the issue. Do I want accurately detailed scaled bots with accessories or ones that fit inside their player.

This would be awesome. Although I don't think it will happen; I'm betting a Soundwave large enough to house a Core class cassette would be way out of scale with what's already been established
Which is exactly what happened with Titans Return Leader class Soundwave. He was big enough to house Legends class figures (which is what Core class is now) and he was huge.

It is really a damned if you do, damned if you do situation with voyager and leader for Soundwave and legends/core and micromaster for the cassettes. The Siege voyager with micromaster scale makes Rumble, Ravage and Frenzy too small and dinky while Soundwave and Laserbeak (Where the hell is Buzzsaw Hasbro?) are great. Go with leader and legends/core, and Soundwave and the birds are just too big.
