As for the review, there was 1 thing I didn't read, and that was a complaint regarding lens flaring. So it was either minimal or nonexistent.Burn wrote:Rodimus Prime wrote:Did I not add the tags myself?

Watched it, not quite sure how I feel about it.
I enjoyed it yes, but I don't think it warranted the hype that surrounded it.
Wasn't overly impressed with how they followed the formula from A New Hope. Droid with secret data gets lost on desert planet, comes across hidden Force user who must help the droid get it's data to the underdogs.
Han dying? Yeah, no surprise there, I expected it.
Effects? Fantastic. I would say the best of all the movies. And as a bonus, Abrams kept the lens flare to a minimum.

Lost, but not destroyed
Film was awesome.
I felt following some of the existing formula was a good idea and it had enough differences for it not to feel like a retelling. I wasn't disappointed. The surprises were all welcome ones and I really loved the new characters.
Easily beats all the prequals and I'd put it nearly on par with the originals.

Damn, I might not even bother seeing it now. At least I hope his death was at the end in a climactic moment and served a crucial purpose like saving Luke or Leia's life. Also, was Lando Calrissian present at any time? At the end of RoTJ, he was piloting the Falcon, as Han was on Endor celebrating.
Seriously - watch the damn movie. You won't regret it.

So the Force Awakens, is it a good movie? Yes! Is it flawed, yes again! Were there parts i was disappointed in, most definitely. Note this is a spoiler, but **** it, Chewbacca had probably the highest kill count, and he just gatted mofos. It was great. He was the star, especially when he hit on the nurse.

Boy, I thought the tie-in commercials were obnoxiously self-derivative...
I dunno, it was alright, but after wannabe Vader, wannabe Tatooine, wannabe R2 (down to being a secret-carrying McGuffin), wannabe cantina, wannabe Yoda, wannabe weird Dagobah vision, wannabe Empire/Rebel conflict, wannabe Palpatine, wannabe Death Star, etc. etc. etc. I just found myself wanting something new. Fin and the spaceship wrecks were great because they were fresh.
Few other things bothered me:
- Was Starkiller Base located in the same star system as Maz's world and the five destroyed planets, or what? Also, "Starkiller" kills planets.
"But it's even bigger and badder than the Death Star!" Blech....
- "Don't stare at any part of it!" Maz turns out to be a super-conventional alien.
- how the heck did BB8 climb those stairs?
Qui-Gon's death absolutely destroyed my mother's interest in the prequel trilogy. I suspect Han Solo's death will do the same with this one...

I just saw it and I agree completely. It was a rehashing of A New Hope from beginning to end, with a few deviations.Noideaforaname wrote:I dunno, it was alright, but after wannabe Vader, wannabe Tatooine, wannabe R2 (down to being a secret-carrying McGuffin), wannabe cantina, wannabe Yoda, wannabe weird Dagobah vision, wannabe Empire/Rebel conflict, wannabe Palpatine, wannabe Death Star, etc. etc. etc.
I didn't like Fin at all. If he and Rey end up together, it'll be a major letdown of the franchise. The chases involving the Falcon, however, were the high point of the movie.I just found myself wanting something new. Fin and the spaceship wrecks were great because they were fresh.
It also kills stars by sucking out their energy to recharge. So yes, "Starkiller." Sounds better than "Planet Killer."Few other things bothered me:

Yes it will, for me. That, along with Luke's non-participation and Rey and Fin's possible relationship, will be a total turnoff. I will see Episode 8 most likely, just to see what Luke does. A showdown a la ESB between Luke and Kylo (who will presumably be much stronger) is a given, and if either Luke or Leia die, the franchise dies.Qui-Gon's death absolutely destroyed my mother's interest in the prequel trilogy. I suspect Han Solo's death will do the same with this one...

I found that whilst events in the movie mirrored some - they also weren't exact copies. They're even the opposite in a lot of cases.
In the original movies, Leia makes a comment about one day Han being wrong and she won't be around to see it - its been used a foreshadowing now as in the Force Awakens as Han has clearly run out of luck and he knows it. Theres a confrontation with his son, ala-Vader\Luke except Han is wrong about Kylo and dies. Kylo isn't a wanna-be Vader, because even Vader didn't stoop to killing his kin.
Infiltrating the Death Star is mirrored twice, in a fashion - with both Poe and Rey. I'd argue that Finn doesn't rescue Poe - more that Poe (the prisoner) rescues Finn. Rey frees herself so even there you can't say its the same as New Hope.
There was lots of 'new' stuff in there, threaded through the sometimes gratuitous homages. There were a lot and maybe it could have had less, but as a set-up for a whole new trilogy - I think its pretty ace. I didn't leave the cinema feeling like I'd been dumped on like after Phantom anyway.

Skipping past all these spoilers, I have a dilemma. See, it'll be at least a week or two before I have enough free time (i work in retail, so holiday season equals massive amounts of overtime, God I **** hate the holidays) to see this. Even then, that means taking time that would be better spent with my family.
However, I forgot that I pre-ordered the novelization months ago. Woke up yesterday with it on my tablet. So should I read it? Or attempt to avoid spoilers untill this bitch is released on bluray?

If you're not going to see it at the cinema - read the book. Personally - I'd go to the cinema
Avoiding spoilers for months is going to end up impossible.

Oh well I saw it - I didn't like it - I found it both silly & Dull clique and uninspired. The Music was 99% recycled - the resolution was kinda Meh.
My whole reaction was - well that was pretty boring.
In fact my reaction at the end of it was to laugh and how earnest it was trying to be - but for me it was unfortunately far to much like Aftermath - namely dull.
A few character beats had some small merit - and I suppose overall it's better than StarTrek 2009 more or less - it didn't out and out piss me off - I just found it pretty unengaging.
I also didn't like the way they handled the force AT ALL.
The world Building failed. Unfortunately it looks like the tone of Star wars Rebels proved to be far far to prophetic - the odd good character beat rapped in a sea of bordom is what Rebels is and that is what Force Awakens is banal with the odd decent character moment.
I hate to say this but I'd rather watch Revenge of the Sith before Force Awakens it is better than Attack of the Clones though.

It's a great movie, it just doesn't feel as life-changing as the originals, or even the prequels. But, I saw the movie two days ago, and it just gets better the more I think about it. The way the movie handles its lore and world building reminded me of how Age of Extinction handled its. You hear and see a bunch of things that are only ever hinted to, or simply not explained at all, leaving room for the sequel to come in and answer most of the questions. I like that. I like when any piece of media leaves the audience in the dark until just the right moment.
That said, there are 2 problems I had with the movie. First off, Disney (who I'm sure was behind it) pretty much bitchified it and turned just about every character into a joke, just like they did with the Marvel movies. I missed the dark and brooding tone of Episode 3.
Captain Phasma was pretty much the DOTM Shockwave of TFA. They spent a year hyping up the character only to turn it into a damn joke. Not only that, but they never showed what happened. Han said something about a trash compactor, but that's it.
Therein lies my second problem: there was no real grounded character. While everyone else was running around cracking jokes and ****, there was no character to reel the movie back in when things got out of control. In the previous movies, there were characters like Yoda and Obi-Wan, who were more ridged and in control. Here, everyone's all over the damn place.
I need to see the movie again, though. And like I said, the more I think about it, the more I like it. It's just those 2 things that keep me from liking it as much as I think I should have.

Well I saw it on Thursday night and I absolutely loved it. As I'm on my phone I can't read spoiler tags that easy nor use them that great, so I'll try to do this as spoiler free as possible.
First off the old guard, I felt they were used just right, from their entrances to how they interacted with the new cast.
As for the new characters themselves I actually quite liked Finn and his character development and his chemistry with Rey. Speaking of her, she's quickly becoming one of my favourite female characters and it will be interesting to see where the actress goes from here.
Kylo Ren, I love how much of a feel we were given of his character from all the times he kept his mask on and there was a lot of times I saw another character in his performance which was undoubtedly intentional.
BB-8... I want one, that is all.
Actual plot, simple (in places) enough to help the pacing which sped the film up, in the only part that really dragged was the end scene. Now of course there was a bit of negatives that played up more I thought on them since watching it, like more background information on certain persons and organisations and their relationships.
However as it was pointed out elsewhere in the Web we're probably going to get a lot of flashbacks in the next two episodes and the answers to a lot of questions people are having (or calling plot holes)
Regarding Pharma rumours suggest she's going to be bigger in ep8 and more crazy rumours that she's reys mother! And lukes daughter of course
So in the end I would give it four stars out of five.
There's already rumours circulating of cut scenes with Maz.
Oh and about the changes to the force...which comes after lucas gave them a retweak in the prequels, I just rolled with it but obviously that's just me.

I don't believe the latter, especially since they gave Cap'n Phasma the joke non-death of throwing her in the starkiller bases's trash compactor. and if she were someone that im portant more time would've been devoted to her. Something I will be willing to speculate about her, is that maaaaaybe she's a space Nazi.In the clone wars cartoon The mandalorians are depicted as tall, blonde haired, blue eyed, Übermenschs, with a super racist super fascist splinter group known as the death watch. Gwendoline Christie kinda fits that description, physically, she seems a bit like a dork in real life. So maybe she's tangentially related, maybe i'm thinking to deep about it.
Also something I want to say. You're a creep Kylo Ren, go away! we were all having a good time until you showed up. ughhhhhhhhh. Like seriously if he wasn't force sensitive, this guy would've been a rapist, or a serial killer. Or both.

This may not be very P.C. and so I apologise in advance but Kylo Ren is a bit to much like one of those angst teenagers who dresses up like Neo and then goes on a killing spree.

That;s why he's great. I don't remember any villain in Star Wars being like that, besides maybe Palpatine, if you read his backstory.
I saw it again last night and I noticed something:
In the scene where Kylo kills Han, in every shot, there's a blue light where Han is standing and a red light where Kylo Ren is, signifying the light side and the dark side. It indicates that Kylo is still conflicted on where he stands. Especially since, in an earlier scene, when he's talking to Darth Vader's helmet, he says he felt the light side trying to pull him back in, and he was asking for Vader to remind him of the dark side so he didn't slide back.
But in the death scene, the blue light is coming from a sun being drained of all of its energy, and as the scene goes on, the blue light begins to fade away, signifying that Kylo is slowly making up his mind, until the room is completely red. Which is when he ignites his lightsaber and kills Han. And after he stabs him, Kylo says "thank you."
Now, it's made to look like he's thanking Han, but I think he was talking to Darth Vader. He was thanking him for reminding him the power of the dark side. What I think happened is when he looked up and saw that sun being obliterated by the machinations of the dark side, he saw that as Vader reminding him of the dark side's might.
Also, both times I saw the movie, I thought I heard a mouse droid beeping the Duel of the Fates song from Episode 1 towards the very beginning. I don't know if that's just me, or what.

I heard a Mouse droid at the start! I didn't recognise it as singing Dual of the Fates, I thought it was the same beeping as it made in the original trilogy. I couldn't spot it on screen though. And nice observations. I'm going again tomorrow, I'll keep an eye out for that scene.

Yeah, it was the original sound. But the funny thing is, is that when you play the original sound back to back, it actually sounds like Duel of the Fates. To me, at least.
