All right, Here it comes from a g1 loyalist. I loved soundwaves voice, I even Like it better. It wasnt the ridiculous reverse-monotone sure, but it was welker and not far from g1 megs. less reverb and sure more dr.claw but good. very good. a saving point to the movie

The movie characters are not the G1 characters. The Soundwave we saw in this film has NEVER been a tape deck. This is his very first trip to Earth EVER.

The movies all take place in a completely different universe from G1 and all other TF series. In fact, not just a different universe, but a different universe cluster: The Tyran cluster.

G1 and the Beast Era are in the Primax cluster, the Unicron Trilogy is in the Aurex cluster, and Animated is in the Malgus cluster. The rest are currently unnamed.

They all take place in the hasbro cluster.

Yeah, I guess it's starting to show a bit just how much this debate is starting to wear on me.
It's not even about winning or losing but this is how so many folks are taking it.
If there were an argument or point that were actually Logic Based that could be presented that might
sway me that would be one thing but everything so far is emotionally fueled.
Logic is shooting those responses down and I am starting to get frustrated for the other side
because I feel like SOMETHING is being lost here. I'm sick of the whole situation right now
and more than dissapointed in alot of the folks on here.

Again, it's not about him being a boom box. It's Bay giving the deserved nod to Soundwave from G1 by using the vocoder for his voice. We had Prime's voice didn't we? Soundwave is nearly as iconic to Transformers as he is. He's been represented in pop culture with that voice and it deserved to be used.

I'm talking about soundwave in general. the 2 bad bots in command had the mose asenine disguises possible. A gun that had to be held by someone else, and a tape deck that could just be picked up and walked off with.

I'm willing to bet that just like welker and megs voice from the first movie that they tested it with the vocoder and it didnt work. so they went with the next best thing.

That was aimed at Ravage XK and anyone else who would think that the movie charatcers are the same as the G1 characters.

I want to know all about this "Deserved nod to Soundwave" that Bay "owes" because the last time I checked

That is the single most arrogant, self serving load of crap yet. This movie, this franchise, none of this BELONGS to any of us.
This was Bay's Movie from the start and we all knew that. Getting Cullen wasn't something he HAD to do for us. Just because there was a lot of us making noise doesn't mean he HAD to cave and to be honest, I'm surprised he did. Would I have boycotted the movie if he hadn't? NO! I understood from the beginning that this was not a 25 year old animated show.
Getting Welker this time around was not something he had to do either. He didn't owe Welker, he damn sure didn't owe us and he didn't owe it to Hasbro. In fact, I wish he hadn't done it because all it's done is bring out the absolute WORST in the whole damn fandom! Who do you folks think you are thinking you are OWED anything because the hardcore fans aren't the ones responsible for the bulk of the box office sales and we certainly aren't the ones who are supporting Hasbro. The only thing the Hardcore fans did for this movie occured on the opening night showings. Everything after that was majority general public, i.e. parents and children. The fans just happened to be the mouthiest ones during all the after-opening-day interviews so that's who the press zeroed in on. All hype and no substance just like this thread.

Bay's thrown the fans many bones and homages to the different aspects of the fandom but all alot of ppl want to do is whine about how they didnt appeal to you personally and bay is an egomaniac for it.

So the voice wasn't vodceded (sp) or whatever the method used to the voice in the 80's, Im happy that Frank Welker was in ROTF as Soundwave. Be happy for the recognition in any form people. It was one of the producers that nayed for the echo to the voice so complain to them.

I don't know if this has been pointed out earlier in this thread, but you DO get to listen to Soundwave with a vocoder effect. When he calls Sam's mother to her cell phone while in Paris, you can clearly listen to Soundwave's voice being patched through a vocoder. It just hit me in the face as a G1 nod. I can't believe you guys didn't get this. Granted, it was not an extremely wet vocoder as in the G1 cartoons (but this is so you still get that it was Soundwave calling) but you get it there.

EDIT: By the way, I forgot to point out that in this scene I mention, Soundwave even sounds kinda mechanical and somehow choppy, like his G1 version, due to some sort of noise in the line.

Something to ponder: if Welker was not used for Soundwave, but a vocoder was used with somebody else's voice, would people still find this reason enough to complain of a lack of G1 authenticity?

Uh, can't people just be happy that Soundwave was actually voiced by Welker? That alone is a huge fan-kudo, whether people want to accept it or not... I liked it.

I haven't read the rest of the posts, so I don't know if this has been mentioned already. Optimus Prime's voice doesn't sound exactly the same. You have to remember that Frank Welker is 25 years older than he was in 1984. He's 63 years old. Do you really expect him to sound the way he did when he was a young 38 years old?
