That's a little harsh, don't you think? I mean, if he had said 'I think Sly would make a great president' I would echo your sentiment, but for liking black licorice? Because technically, black licorice is older than...the other ethnicities of licorice. And it has a flavor that doesn't chisen plastic.

Anyone tried this yet? Sea urchin roe. Looks like phlegm and taste almost like it but when mixed raw on vinegared rice, rolled seaweeds and horseradish......truly an experience to remember.

This one is a Chinese dish. Kind of like an appetizer Jellyfish but technically it's called seaweeds.

Used to look like this



But when cured, seasoned and prepared



Mixed with soysauce, chilli, sesame seed and or black vinegar

Disgusting. Tried it once, and it was f**king sweet--not umame sweet, but sugary sweet. I can deal with the texture, but the taste was just weird, like someone was playing a practical joke on you and doused the thing with syrup.

Now this was actually somewhat enjoyable. Pleasant sweet-sour flavors (somewhat like Thai mango salad) and a crunchy texture.

Fenrir, you like the nasty stuff.

I have had most of those because it's the polite thing to do when at a Chinese wedding, but there has been many a fancy over-priced dinner I've left and needed to hit fast food afterward to eat something I'll actually wanted to finish. But give me a decent Dim Sum restaurant and I know the items I want brought around.

Abalone.... Give me Poutine anyday over that.

Truth be told, dishes like abalone and shark's fin are basically "good because you can afford it, and expensive because they're hard to get." In and of themselves, they don't taste like anything--it's the braising and the rich sauces that give them any flavor, which is like putting the cart before the horse.

The sauce is just as enjoyable when poured over white rice--the abalone's just there to jack up the price.

One thing I couldn't stand is a dish my Philippine EMT mates made me try....."balot". Soup taste good but for the rest

This duck egg, well I could stomach. Another appetizer......called "Century Egg". Boiled duck egg, the shell wrapped in mud and buried until it gets this black tarry color



And soyed pig ears (yummy)



This one is another Chinese dished composed of a cow/bull's butt, balls and male organ. Boiled to softness and mixed with a lot of herbs (ginseng etc) which is said to get a rise out of you (or bust an artey in your brain)



Btw, another weird thing I came across but can't post the pics for very vulgar reasons (I'd get banned for it) but I saw on kotaku a officially franchised pastry dish by Crypton Future Media (Miku Hatsune's owners). Just google the word pastry that looks like the female pudenda........... check the pics and be prepared to get knocked out silly. (That thing I haven't tasted yet........the pastry guys........the real thing on the other hand )

Believe me SKYWARPED. I completely understand, which is why if I've been invited and I'm not picking up the tab I just smile and eat what I need to to keep up appearances.

It's sad IMHO because the same cultures these dishes come from have some awesome eats which are great, which is why I love going to Dim Sum with friends, and walking the food stalls at the night markets we have here in Vancouver (well Richmond) during the summer months.

Quite true--it's often the simpler street foods that are the best.

Except balut or hot vit lon, as it's called in Vietnam. I'm having a hard time not throwing up just looking at that pic.
