Scale to other FoC figures, good call. Love the scale with BB, and that extra head difference compared to Grimlock puts him at the same height as City Commander.

Now to see how much of the battle station remains once the armor is on the core figs.

You know, in all honesty, I was kind of hoping that it didn't work like that. My vision of Ultra Magnus has the trailer becoming the armor, not being a separate part. Optimus has the trailer become the battle station, Magnus has the trailer turn him into a giant. All the armor parts wouldn't even fit inside that trailer.

Battle Tanker works the same way, too, doesn't it?

I mean, I know I'm being picky, but I still have faith that it's possible to engineer something that fits the characters.

The price is screaming "waste". If it was a different character, maybe. But I dont need another Ultra Magnus because City Commander is awesome.

I think the company was trying its best to maximize sales by having a product for both figures available, since they share the same mold. You're spot on about how we traditionally view both characters and the uses of their trailers. The decision to release both versions (assuming they are functionally identical, just different paint/plastic colors) was probably the easiest for Transformazing Toys to take. There's still the option to add character-specific traitsssss like different helmets/weapons. But overall, this is the same product in different colors. If more/most of the trailer was used for the armor, it would be more plausible that your initial idea would work - leave trailer as a battle station for Prime, take trailer apart and armor Magnus up.

*edit add-on* And Battle Tanker has the add-on pieces to armor up the main figure but there is still most of the tanker available to either create a battle station or as some type of God Armor station.

I've got the Magnus trailer on preorder. I have both the Hasbro and Takara versions of both Prime and Magnus, so I'll likely pair up the armor sets with the Hasbro versions and leave the better looking Takara versions in the 'nude' .

Yeah, it looks like the same effect in the game. I also love the metallic paint. It really makes the figures 'pop' .

some nice white covers for those feet holes would be very welcome on this thing. Looking pretty good though.

These look very nice. The more I see them, the more I like them. Unfortunately, I just don't feel the need for an UM Pre-earth add on like this. I'm happy with FoC UM as-is, and use WfC Prime as my pre-G1 Prime.

[Edit] And I don't even know where to go with a pre-G1-pre-PM-Prime-PM-Prime...I think I'm confused...

thing is, Magnus, like a lot of the newly introduced characters from TFTM never bothered to update his alt mode to an Earth one, or if he did, it was from the Future Time Of 2005, so we've no idea if that's what trucks looked like on Earth or not. so a pre-Earth UM can also be a post-Earth one. G1/Classics-wise, he was always the same. Hell, it wasn't until Dreamwave that they even acknowledged the inner "white Prime" robot as being part of the character in fiction.

I'm not sure I quite agree with your interpretation, craggy. Magnus's semi tractor is definitely "earth" like. (What with being a repaint of G1 OP and all...) Sure, the car carrier might be perceived as somewhat futuristic. Given the the direction the pre-earth figures have gone in the video games (which I much prefer to the pilot episodes of the G1 cartoon) I would expect something different than what appeared in TFTM, at least for Magnus who has such an earth like semi tractor.

I just prefer the FoC look my pre-earth G1 Magnus. This trailer is cool. I'm not going to knock it except that the price is keeping me fom considering it. That's the cool thing about Transformers in general (the new "Aligned" continuity aside). We can each choose our own stories and how we want to view the characters.

If I could just get a larger version of FOC Magnus I'd be quite happy with that. Or a version of the IDW MTMTE design.

Ben's review was helpful, I'm glad we got better looks at the new head/face sculpts. Also, got a better feeling of how large the base mode really is when all the armor parts have been removed. I'm intrigued about the statement of supplying additional/replacement hips and knees for the Magnus/Prime figure, but really hope if the company is going through all that trouble that they still release something to cover up the gaping holes on the bottom of Magnus/Prime's feet.

That poor prototype has been through alot, hasn't it?

it seems an awful lot like an armour set that should cost maybe $40, and a trailer that should cost maybe $60, and the two are mostly unrelated but we're being asked to pay nearly double that? It makes a nice enough looking Magnus, but I'm not impressed.
