It's a great sales motivator for me, and I'm sure a lot of other fans.
Based on purely circumstantial evidence, they're making plenty of money without doing this.
I quite agree with you, just to be clear

It's really tough to get super hyped for the future when it looks like endless variations of G1. Transformers has always remained compelling by not overstaying its welcome in one state or another, but PotP is dangerously close to just being CW + TR without bringing anything actually new to the table.
I really want to see another line get the Generations treatment.
I wouldn't even mind if it was "lazy" repaints/redecos.
Give me 2001 RID as Generations -
Optimus Prime from the CW Hot Spot mold
Ultra Magnus from the CW Optimus Mold with a trailer that can split into a powered up mode via the CW ports (you can then use these pieces on Optimus for Omega Prime)
T-AI from a Prime Master mold
Prowl from the CW Sunstreaker mold
Side Burn from the CW Dead End mold
X-Brawn from the CW Offroad mold
Fortress Maximus, Emissary, Cerebros as a repaint of TR Fort Max
Hot Shot, R.E.V., Crosswise, W.A.R.S., Ironhide, Mirage can all use CW molds too.
Or make new molds.
