It is much easier to suspend disbelief and accept the impossible when watching a cartoon than when watching live action. For those who think the 86 movie would work in live action, I have to disagree. Also, the 2007 flick wasn't made just for fans, but to draw in as much of the general population as possible. The cartoon was made for kids who already knew all the characters and what was going on. A lot of people going into the 2007 movie have no clue about whats going on and have to rely on the movie to tell them everything. Like somebody else said, origin or introductory movies like this can drag a little because they have to set everything up. The next movie shouldn't have that problem.

hmm I see and understand your point Finbot. I think this new movie will re generate interest in the franchise. Kinda like the first sniff of coke. The cokehead will return for TF2 & TF3. So no to drugs kids.

Reading through this thread I keep seeing the argument that TF:TM is a classic and is still well remembered 20years after it was made. Now don't get me wrong I love it and as a transformers fan I think it is classic but who outside the fandom has any solid memories of TF:TM? I just think that if you are refering to the average joe then more of them will remember the live action movie over the 86 movie.

On the contrary, most of the non-fan people i've talked to knows the old tv series and the old movie. Even girls who were not fans.

There's really very very few people who doesn't know the original Transformers Movie 86. I could mention a couple of 7 year olds, a few in their 60's who doesn't even care.

The "average joe and jane" from early teenage to probably late 40s or early 50s knows about the old movie, and had fond memories talking about it. Although some of them can't remember the story very well.

Also, many of the new "fans" (of the new MOVIE 2007) or just plain movie-goers often comment they can't make out what the robots look like, and very hard to distinguish who is who. Hence, they don't get the plot at all. They're just there to see things get blown up.

I honestly think thats great that people you've spoken to outside the fandom can remember TF's so well. I am merely stating what I believe based on the people I've spoken to. Example: My brother in law Dave loved TF's as a kid but his family wasn't very well off so he never had many toys. He does remember the cartoon show but didn't even realise that they made a movie.

I wish more people remembered it.

TFM did not get a lot of promotion. TF1 got a lot of promotion. Promotion helps.

How do we grade which is better? by popularity/numbers or by quality/classical appeal??

Wow, great question with a hard answer. I'm 29 years old which mean I was what, all of but 8 years old or so when I saw the 1986 movie. Hard to compare seeing the old one then being 8 and the new one now being 29. Throw in all the leaps and bounds in technology and CGI, the fact that ones animated and ones live action, you've got yourself a very tough comparison- with the '86 flick fighting a steep uphill battle.
But, alas, I gotta go with the 1986 version-for several reasons, the same reasons it's been one of my favorite cartoons/sci-fi/action pics all around and still is. You have death, life, rebirth, great heroism, terrible villainy, and to say a larger than life villain would be an understatement. Now that's a lot of awesome nigh biblical themes to have in one movie, let alone a Transformers movie that has the largest Transformer any of us had ever seen or thought possible, the death of Optimus Prime (yeah, I cried, and you know what, it was awesome! That's what movies SHOULD do to you. Anyone cry when Jazz died? Probably not) the introduction of the Matrix, the reformatting of Megatron, the death of Starscream, the introduction of some really cool new characters, and love him or hate him, HotRod was who I related to the most and watching him become the new Prime, and hearing Optimus's voice christen him thusly... goosebumps dude, goosebumps. Ironhide getting blasted through the floor of the shuttle by Megatron? We'd never seen anything like that before! They could fire off a thousand shots and miss their targets everytime, that's how the show lasted so freaking long :) This was Transformers the silly cartoon with a breath of reality in it, and it rocked.
Transformers started as a cartoon (and toy of course). It's always been a cartoon. Next year, it's going to be a cartoon again. Can't knock the animated factor, it's really a big part of what Transformers is all about, and I see the live action movie, with all the do-dads and fancy CGI as great and cool as it is, as just a live action interpretation of Transformers.
Honestly, I don't hold it against anyone if they liked the new movie more. That many bells and whistles it's hard not to. But come on, it was all humans and very little of the namesake of the movie. The 1986 movie was all 'bots, just like it'd always been, and has been in it's various incarnations. I just think the old movie should be appreciated and respected as a giant signpost on the road of Transformers history, not just refered to as a peice of crap.

Excellent points Unicron's Head. The animation was just awesome in the '86 movie, an dthe story was leaps and bounds better. Plus the voices for the original movie were awesome. Orson Welles, no one can beat him. Scatman Crothers, Frank Welker's Megatron just awesome. From my experience many many people like the orignal movie over the new one. Even non-Transformers fans. I've lent my DVD out and I don't get it back until a year later once. The original is just classic.

What was bad about the original movie music? Aside from the fact it's out dated. 20 years from now this movie's music will be out of date. There aren't that many classic "stand the test of time" songs.

Movie 86's music are not outdated for me.

I'm using "You've Got The Touch" as my ringtone.

It always manages to catch the attention of people around when my phone rings.

And I'd get "Wow, that's a nice ringtone" or "Nice music. Where did you get that?" all the time.

Dude, please don't kill yourself if he's not a stereo :)
And all these people knocking the soundtrack: yes, it's very VERY dated and it's very VERY 80's hair metal. But again, going back to that time when it first came out, 80's hair metal bands like LA Guns and Motley Crue and later still Guns N' Roses, were considered hardcore or cool or in style or however you want to put it. At the time, the original movie had what I considered to be a serious soundtrack, not just digitally orchestrated fluff (Vince DiCola rules by the way). It was the kinda stuff my long haired drummer in a band brother listened to. Some of the new bands on the new movie soundtrack? Uhhh...well, I don't know if I'd necessarily consider them rough and tumble or extreme or very cool or anything like that. They're alright but, I mean, there's probably an emo band in the lot somewhere. And we all know how we all feel about emo. :)

Soundwave entered Earth in 1984. He scanned for a cassette recorder, and took that as his alt mode.

Sometime during the fall of Berlin Wall, he was riding on the hip belt of one of the demonstrators... and, was knocked unconscious by the falling debris, and entered into stasis mode.

In TF 2, 2009 sequel, Soundwave was found in one of those abondoned trash bin. He was revived. But his scanner chip was fried. So he has to stay with his 1984 cassette recorder alt mode. (Could be a Sony Walkman. Advertising points for Sony)

How's that for a way to bring back original G1 Soundwave into the Movie Sequel???

It's the king of all things funkadelic here with a question for y'all. Even though I think this is going to be a landslide, I gotta know... Now that everyone and they grandma saw the new Transformers movie, which one was better?

P.S. This is the first time I've done this Im' kinda new...
So chill on my mystakes, ya dig?

Here is how I would rank the 3 as of now.

1. Transformers 2009

2. Transformers 2007

3. Transformers 1986

Even though the 2009 version is not even released yet, I think they made enough money to make the 2009 film better than the 2007 film. The one in 1986 is the one where they killed off Prime and Ironhide, so that one is the worst one. If my baby girl Arcee dies in this new movie, it will go to the bottom of my list like a nose dive!! The 1986 film actually had a better story and soundtrack than the 2007 film, but it didn't have the action and visuals that 2007 had.

So I am calling my shot on this one.

"Transformers Revenge of the Fallen" the best of the 3 Transformer films to date.

What!!!!??? OMG!!

Anyone who ranks TF2 higher than TFM is off their rocker!! Are you kidding me? TF2 > TFM? No Way!

TF2 is not even better than TF1 so it just is not possible for TF2 to be better than TFM. Did people see the same movie that I saw? Thank goodness for DVDs people.

I mean TF2 is total rubbish!!! Ice Cream truck bots? The Ugly Fallen guy, Jar Jar bixobots (Jolt, FlappyMcMud & Skidmarks). Saying TF2 is better than TFM is like saying the Backstreet Boys are better than the Beatles or the Jonas Brothers are better than KISS. Its just not happening people. This is too comical that people thing this TF2 movie is so great when it is rubbish. Wasn't the writers even asking for everyones favorite quotes from TFM to use for TF2?? If I recall that was in fact going on.

What was everyone favorite line in YF1??

Was it

A. "were you masterbating Sam?"

B. "What cracking lil bitches?"

or

C. "Shes a criminal, Criminals are HOTT!"

heres a bonus answer

D. "That ain't Freddy thats Wolverine"

lame,lamer and lamest!

How many times will Prime say "mybad" in TF2??

Maybe I am just too old school but saying that TF2 is better than TFM is crazy now that dust has settled. See when a movie first comes out everyone runs and says its the best ever!!! Like people did when Phantom Menace came out, everyone said it was the best, THEN the dust settled and people saw it was one of the worst of the saga. The same thing applies here with the Transformer movie, just cause it is the newest and the latest does not make it the best. Bottom line TF2 will never be better than TFM. Not with Ice Cream trucks.

Ok Shadowman...I am waiting.

First, I think 'll go with the obvious one, how have you seen RotF so soon before it's release to make a judgment like this? Second, no, we did not see the same movie you saw because the movie is not out yet.

And now for my opinion:

The '86 movie has the better base plot, that is, giant world devouring robot threatens Cybertron. The animation was good, except for the many many animation errors. But what really killed it, was how, in the first 20 minutes, they had killed almost the entire cast of seasons 1 and 2, and replaced them with sub-par remakes.

In terms of action, story telling, acting, writing, etc. I give it to the '07 movie.

Cooly, you sound just like my older brother, he is one of those G1 fan boys lol, I will admit you did make some good points about some of the stupid dialog in the 2007 film. I am going to come back to this topic after I see Revenge of the Fallen and re rank the movies, I have a feeling that my list will not change, I am very confident that this new movie is better than the one from 2 years ago. The old cartoon movie was very dark. To me it was not bad, just very dark. There are some stupid parts in the animated movie also, like Wheelie, Junkbots dancing in a circle & those corny dinosaur transformers. Who is a fan of those stupid things? In the long run the 1986 film may actually be the best, but right now all the hype and energy is on 'Revenge of the Fallen' Ill be back with an official fair rank after I see the movie. Stay Tuned.
