I... I uh...

...wow.

Anyway, I go with the 1986.
It went where I wanted the cartoon to go, and the music is one of my favorite soundtracks, 80'sness aside.

This new movie makes my nads curl up into my body, on so many levels.

I liked the original. The animation was a level above the tv series. I remember watching the movie at a young age and being totally swept away with the animation of it. Not putting down the Bay movie or anything. It was action packed and all, but I hated to here Soundwave's voice change into a gremlin type creature. C'mon, don't mess with Soundwave's voice!!! They could've kept it too with all the effects they have. Imagine him saying..."Downloading all tactical military files from database...all hail...Megatron!!!" Also, the fact of Orson Welle's and Leonard Nimoy's voices. Pure legends.

Are you kidding me? Is it really a contest? The one that has the Transformers we know and love, the one TRUE Transformers movie that got the franchise right...

Is the 2007 movie.

'86 was a wreck. They killed off 95% of the characters we knew and loved just to sell the next batch of toys. Other than Cybertron and the robots, it was barely a TF movie.

2007's is the clear winner.

I bought the 1986 version (anniversary set) for the special features, plus I wanted to see what the "corrected" version would look like.

All it did was put a shinecoat on a bucket of sh*t.

I'll keep it for the special features, not to mention that it looks like it might become rare. (Best Buy apparently pulled it from their shelves and won't sell it due to a recall or something.) But I can't watch it.

I watched it once, all the way through on the new DVD and it was just jaw droppingly awful. (I enjoyed the 25 minute DVD that came with the Classics Megatron/Optimus 2-pack. I kid you not.)

I tried showing the movie to my girlfriend and she got sleepy halfway through and when it was over...she apologized for falling asleep on me and said "It was good, just didn't keep my attention. Well...alright. I'll be honest. It was stupid and really, really boring. Can we put in season one?"

She went to see the 2007 version and it kept her attention from beginning to end. She adores (and I mean *ADORES*) Bumblebee. Oh she went on and on and on about him.

When I asked her about all of it (the G1 series, the movie, this movie, etc) and got her reply, I was surprised. This is what she said: "Well, the cartoon's fun. It's dumb, but it's bright and colorful, plus it's cheesy fun. The first movie is bad, wrapped in crap, covered in more bad. This movie? Oh...I almost pissed myself. It was so cool!"

And she still doesn't get TFs all that much. She gets the basic gist of it, likes some of the toys, but she's by no means a fan or collector. The 2007 movie has changed that. She wants a Bumblebee like...yesterday.

Yeah, my wife watched the 1986 movie with me and she fell asleep halfway through because she thought it was so absurdly aweful. She saw the 2007 movie with me opening night and loved it. I think the 1986 movie really only appeals to people who watched it when it came out because of the nostalgia factor, I know a lot of younger TransFans who have tried watching the old movie recently and thought it was just a bucket of crap. I don't know anyone who watched the 1986 movie for the first time recently and actually thought it was good.

I could understand kids enjoying the '86 movie because it's a cartoon. I mean, what kid doesn't like cartoons? Hell, I'm 27 and I still like cartoons. lol (Which goes to show you how much I can't stand the '86 movie then...)

I could also see the kids being excited over the '07 movie because of "Mom! Look! He's real! He's real!" (and that right there is the best part. Watching them just burst with joy is the best part. It reminds you of what got you hooked on the whole thing in the first place.)

Either way, it all comes down to personal opinion. We just have to deal with the fact that not every person agrees with our side of it and move on. (After the initial grieving phase.)

I first watched the movie when I was 13(that's 5 years ago), and I loved it. Still do(despite it's flaws).

Same with the new one.

Honestly, I can't rank them; Bay's was absolutely Jaw-Dropping in terms of effects, and had me for a good two-thirds of the movie..... however, till the Bots arrived it was complete and utter crap(just as bad as dancing junkions, if not worse). However, the movie is an undeniable benchmark point for the TF Universe, despite it's camp-factor(namely the dancing scene and the music[well, for most people; I actual like "The Touch"])

I first saw the tf movie when i was 8 which was 8.5 years ago and i loved the movie then, but now after looking at the 86 movie, it is a mess, # of things bad about it. i love the new movie and i would probably rate 2007 movie better on my list

I like the 86 version simply because we get a wider shot of the TF universe, even though they kill everyone off.
But I hate Michael Bay, but his movie rocked.

I've just finished watching TF 2007 for the 6th time.

It's sort of became quite boring now to see these S7 guys making a joke out of themselves. And they seem to take about half of the movie away.

This new movie has really a big impressive impact on the first 5 times i watched it. I still like the realistic design of the robots. But there's way too much drag about these S7 guys, too much unrelated conversations and interactions among the military guys (spanish thing, baby on webcam), very bad portrayal of sam's folks... everybody keeps on talking except for the real stars in the movie, the Transformers.

Not to mention a lot of bad script for the robots themselves.
Such as...
*Jazz just parking around when Bumblebee was badly hit and had to crawl.
*Prime saying "Autobots, roll out!", then every bots started to jump and hop around from the top of the white building. He could have just said "Autobots, move out!".
*Bumblebee, finally able to speak, seeks permission to stay behind with the boy. A minute later, all of the Autobots stayed behind with the boy anyway. What's the point of the permission? Just for empty dramatic effect.
*Bumblebee, badly hit, refused to use the power of Allspark, (which by the way, was sitting sparkling in his hand), to heal his own leg. Again, just for empty dramatic effect.
*Sam and Mikaela falling down from Prime's shoulder (under the bridge), and Prime swinging his feet down, purportedly to catch them, should have already delivered a death blow to the couple! If not, at least, massive injuries and broken ribs. What is Prime thinking? Imagine those large METAL feet, could easily kill fleshings on even moderate speed impact. Prime is a car/truck, and he doesn't know that? Miraculously, both human fell thru unharmed.
*S7 reinforcements coming, all Autobots must make a quick get away. And Prime chose to stay in bot mode, put Sam and Mikaela on his shoulders, then run and swing around like Tarzan? This scene makes no sense at all. Here's a chance to make good use of his DISGUISE, and he chose not to.
*Jazz uttering "you want a piece of me?" while in the clutches of Megatron. Every Autobot, except Prime, trembles at the sight of Megatron, and the SMALLEST of them all taunts him while being held in his claws? Who the hell wrote these scripts?
*Sam make a dash for the tall white building. Ironhide runs close behind to protect him. Why didn't Ironhide just transformed and gave Sam a quick ride? They'll arrive in seconds, and be much safer for Sam. Plus no chance of accidentally dropping the Allspark, or Ironhide stepping on Sam nor the crying lady. What's the use of being a kick-ass pickup truck, when you don't use it anyway at the most crucial moment?

Plus more and more... i could rumble on endlessly. Anyway, i guess you get the point.

Overall, TF 2007 has about only 30% of the movie really worth watching. This 30% is very good stuff. Unfortunately, dragged down by the rest of the 70% crap.

I hope Bay and the rest of the TF movie big shots will consider avoiding all these same pitfalls on Movie #2. Otherwise, hope of Movie #3 may just simple die, just like Cybertron.

Initially, i gave equal scores to both old and new movies.
Old being big on story and character development, new being winner of best ever graphics and effects.
But reevaluating the facts...
TF 1986 - 80% good stuff, 20% boring stuff
TF 2007 - 30% good stuff, 70% boring stuff

I'd say, TF 1986 seems to still have the edge.

86 MOVIE

Movie was actually centered around the bots.
There was actually more action.
Decepticons were not just cannon fodder.
Movie knew who its audience was (kids who watched the show) and played up to them, not everyone and their mom.
Was ahead of its time in terms of using main stream actors for voice acting.
Was pretty violence/dark considering it was an animated "kids" movie.
Introduction of the new characters was actually decent, they actually spoke more than a couple lines.
Unicron was cool.
Megatron Prime fight was actually decent.
Megatron actually offed prime...I never really liked prime as I always liked the Decepticons more.
Soundtrack is actually pretty good and memorable.
Starscream got his moment of leadership...albeit temporarily.
New Decepticon characters/designs were cool (Scourge,Cyclonus,Galvatron).

Sure it didnt have big budget CGI bots and pretty explosions, scantly clad female eye candy, or nostalgia to fall back on. But it was what it was, a Transformers movie that didnt insult its audience and delivered on giving us (as kids) a much more darker, action packed, and grittier version of the show that we all were watching back then.

you have to remember, most of this is origin story and usually those have a slow buildup & are annoying. Any of the newer Marvel movie origin stories suffer from this too. But don't write off TF just yet -it's still the best summer movie besides DH4. Hands down the best. Show some pride in the bots!

Exactly. Movie 2007 is really deficient in story, with a very bad script.

Bay is really good in depicting action scenes, except for the too shaky camera and too much unnecessary close ups missing out on the big picture.

I wonder who were writing the scripts. They should be the one responsible for making this, otherwise perfect movie, go bad.

the 1986 version is the by far the best!...well maybe not by far...basically what people are going to watch are the CGI effects...because there is no story in this movie...its just a mishmash of scenes to me... i felt like i was watching Armageddon again with a different cast and giant robots in it! Michael Bay has no depth in terms of story/character development even though he's not the writer, but since he's the director and ultimately decides everything he should really not make it like the real live cartoons he makes..His movies are more like cartoons as was TF2007 than the 1986 version!...

Put it this way...would you rather watch his movie or would you rather watch the 1986 version with CGI effects?...and if u have any sense ur watching the 1986 story with the CGI effects!

Can you imagine the flack Hasbro and what not would be getting, if the Internet was as big as it is now, in 86?

We'd have threads full of..

"LOL STAN BUSH IS DOING A TRANSFORMERS SONG?!?!! ROFL!"

and

"OMG they killed off Optimus Prime, he IS transformers, how could they do that?"

and

"THEY KILLED MY CHILD HOOD (killing a whack of main characters)

and..

"That daniel kid is annoying"

aaaaaaaaand.. "Why only 4 dinobots?"

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand

"Look at all these new characters, why do they look like stupid vehicles, why does Hot Rod have flames, are flames cool on cybertron?"
