true true, and yet that doesn't bother me as much as seeing young girls cosplaying from shows they technically aren't old enough to be watching yet. [cough]bibleblack[/cough]

Agreed, as far as design goes, It is a great uniform, and more interesting and stylish than most shows out there. As a garment, is is visual stunning, as opposed to it's source material which is visual shocking.

BB is one of many shows that friends have liked, which is fine, but I rather they weren't watching when I was in the room.

That's just wrong. I mean, I understand completely if you were watching that with a partner, but watching porn casually among friends is just creepy and wrong. o_O

It's all thanks to my SNES, and after school cartoons. I was started off in the early 90s with the basic kids stuff like Samuri Pizza Cats, you know the stuff we all grew up with. I moved on to things like Teknoman, and eventually made my break into actual anime with Tenchi Muyo, Guyver, A-ko. All the the stuff that Manga entertainment started off with in the UK.

When I got to see Tenchi and El Hazard that was probably when I started really getting into it.

Cool so you grew up with it. I had a passing interest in anime from watching cartoons and playing computer games in a similar fashion to you. Tho I admit i wasn't too interested by it origins. Then by some chance i caught a glimpse of a late night show on cartoon network that simple stood out from everything I'd seen before. I didn't know too much about the show but it grabbed me, i ended up watching it every night until it finished. The show was Cowboy Bebop. Even tho i'd missed over half of Bebop the show still left an emotional and ultimately lasting impression on me.

A few years would pass but i'd eventually rediscover Bebop on Youtube in late 2005, I still loved it and decided to make a new years resolution to watch more anime for 2006. My interest anime snowballed ever since. Probably the only resolution i've ever kept.

So how did the rest of you get in anime and/or manga? and how long have you been otaku?

Sorry, I omitted to mention that I made the leap from Saban dubs to actual Anime because of research I did on the shows that I liked. Teknoman in particular, I spent a lot of time finding out more about it because it was the best cartoon I had ever seen, and in the process I discovered its origin as Tekkaman Blade. From then on I went straight into the city center and and took the Guyver Vol.1 off the VHS shelf in Forbidden Planet.

And the rest is history...

Image

Now I have over 200 of these clunky VHS things and with the advent of DVD I have no idea what the heck I'm going to do with them all.

Man... They don't make 'em like this anymore. Gall Force, Ellcia, Moldiver, Metal Angel Marie... Airbats!!!!!!!!! I love it.

You have no idea.
line 10 start rant

Basicly in this area there use to be a shop called Anime Jyanai. (yes named after the song in Gundam ZZ)
Number one, It was run by a guy named William Chow, great guy and was even my landlord for a few years.
Number two, it was the functional headquarters of both the Vancouver Japanese Animation Society/Club (depending on when you joined) and Arctic Animation. (older fans may remember AA as the early group that fansubbed Orange Road, and a few others http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Teahouse/8513/fan1.html)

Because of it's duel roles it ment that the posted hours of operation were more guidelines than anything else, and a few of us had access to the keys for a number of reasons. So it was quite uncommon to be there hanging out til the wee hours and depending on what was going on guys would be watching whatever on one of the available tv's. A few of these guys would watch more questionable materials without thinking of the ramifactions. (hey when others are subtitling the same kind of stuff in the editing room, moral stances don't really come into play.

Also many nights if the shop was closed that ment that it was likely that the club was just over at Will's house, and seeing he was a confirmed single male otaku for the entire 80/90's he had a place that could put a Japanese otaku to shame for content/collection and other stuff. (if you have haven't previously seen anime purity tests then question 138/139)

The moral of the story is, Yes, I have seen many questionable shows, not always of my choice but it was the nature of the hobby and fandom at the time.

For the record.
Anime Jyanai was closed a number of years ago in order that Will could work for a legit company and make enough money to support bringing his wife over from China.
Will and said wife have recently had a baby, which I'll be attending a shower for next week-end.
VJAS is currently in suspended operation as we met our goal of being in a more anime/manga accessable world, and the active members are working on Anime Evolution.
Arctic Animation is also in suspended operation as none of s have the time/energy to subtitle in the higher paced immediate/online operations of today's internet.

Sounds like I would have loved to have lived near you. Enthusiasts were so rare around here, I often felt like I was on my own in everything. Things have taken off here in Britain now but it's hard to get out of the habit of keeping the hobby to myself. The fact they're all so much younger than me doesn't help... So depressing.

On that note I understand completely. The biggest problem I have with the "generation gap" in anime fans currently is that when I started going to (and later staffing) cons, I would enjoy the dances. It was great to see people having fun and dancing to what then was a mix of about 60% anime themes, 20% other j-pop, and 20% popular dance tracks.

Dances nowdays are just raves at animecons, where the mix is about 60% what you would hear at any dance club, with 10% anime themes, and 20% eurobeat pulled off of DDR soundtracks.

The truely sad bit is when some of the eurobeat is played, I recognize the j-pop song it was ripped from.

The test said I'm only 10.5% corrupted. :P

I actually got out of anime for a while due to otakus at my school. There were a couple of animes that I knew inside and out, but they insisted that they were right about everything. I got to the point where anime lost it's fun factor for me so I just stopped watching. It's one of the reasons why emos and otakus piss me off. There are some other reasons, but those are listed in the party forum.

I only really got back into anime a few months ago, but I'm very picky about what I watch. I mostly like the action stuff like Outlaw Star, Trigun, Gundam, Hellsing. There are others, but that gives you an idea of what I gravitate towards. They also have to feel farily original to me.

I can also appreciate a good love story as long as it's done right. Ah My Goddess is a personal favorite for me because it never really gets explicit and it's hard to find a decent romantic anime story that doesn't get trashy. Tenchi was also a fairly well done series, but I hated GXP. Love Hina, was funny just because Keitaro was the ultimate victim of circumstance.

I found Vandread to be unique as it combined action with a love story. Sure it was a really weird story, but it was interesting to see how the characters developed over both seasons. It's one of the few animes I've seen that has a lot of character development.

As all of you know, I'm a sucker for good model kits so if I make a model of a figure, chances are really good that I like that anime. I don't build anything unless I know who the character is. Also, when it comes to models, I'm VERY picky. My criteria for anime figures are, they can't be sleezy in any way. I don't want to build anything that I'd be ashamed of if little kids were to see my display.

Tekka: I didn't add the glasses because the glasses Vash came with were junk and I was too lazy to make my own. IMO, it makes Vash a little more striking in appearance without them.

I am only 38%, 30% unique, which is shocking to me, I thought I would have scored higher.

That is a nice view, you have a good location there. Now I can get a better look at what's on the shelves too.

Robofreak, if you want something romantic and tasteful there are so many series out there you could try. So many I don't even know where I should start...

I have always been fond of I''s, even though it has its ecchi moments they're nothing severe. Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou, Suzuka (though I would go the Manga route on this one because the ending is the most heart warming part of the story for me), Ichigo 100% if you're desperate, or even Cross Game which is airing right now... You could watch it week to week.

To follow up on Tekka's last post to Robofreak, Kari Kano is a great watch but the series has a couple flaws.
1) as the manga wasn't far enough they had to fill episodes with extra content.
2) Too much recapfor the length of the series.
3) it only covers about a third of the manga run. (the last episode is about half way thru volume 8 of a 21 volume series.

Beyond that, I wholely recommend both the anime and manga, but watch it first. If you start reading the manga first you are more likely to be disappointed that the show doesn't go as far.

It had a story that felt (for lack of better terminology) more real than most 'high school romance' stories. They have their share of over-the-top moments (re: Yukino chasing down Tsubasa) but over all of the ones I have read (saddly more than i likely should have thanks to one of my ex room-mates) it has an overall feel that seemed more realistic and features a cast that you could believe could exist.

As far as the anime goes, it made me realize two main things:
1) I wish I had been in a relationship at the time as I would have perfered to watch it with someone.
2) Holy crap, Gainax can make a series without Anno pulling a Tomino Jr. routine. After Eva they needed to do something lighter. Now as far as some of the wierder bits they pull in the later episodes, that seem a bit stranger, they make a lot more sence when you concider that on the other side of the office they were working on the Eva films, Things start falling into place.

Wait, you like a show but you don't know what it's about?

In short, it's set in Japan in the 2030s, focusing on a group of people who deal with cyber crime cases. In the context of the show, that means a lot more than file sharing and viruses.

The internet, or any place near you that sells anime DVDs.
