well part of it is dehydration, another is the metabolism of alcohol, and the cogeners that give it flavour, your liver deals with alcohol by turning it into a the rather toxic acetaldehyde, and the cogeners into a variety of toxic things. vodka's the best as it's fairly safe cogener wise since it's pretty much just alcohol and water, whereas something like Brandy is preetty bad being very flavourful and thus full of stuff your liver will turn into poisons by the morning. that's wht mixing drinks is bad, becuase you increase the number of cogeners you have to deal with.
