Of what? That the academy is littered with out-of date dinosaurs past their prime?
I fail to see what's so glamorous about Polar bears over robots that can seemlessly turn into vehicles. Well, guess Bay's just gonna have to turn it up a knotch in TF2. Still I call 1 out of 3!
As a matter of fact, how can you guys consider yourselves fans if you're so bent on the movie not winning? Seem more your priorities are on groping your personal egos.
Well I agree and disagree, keep in mind I posted that right befor I found out they lost for best effects. However I'm with you on the idea of them winning at least 1 area, normaly when a film is given a side jab intro, it's a good sign that they are strong in the running for something.
But your right, the Acadamy is a bunch of outdated art house loosers as a whole. So yeah, they'd go for the more dramatic feature.
However just being recognized by what those outdated arthouse loosers represents does all the way around raise the credibility of a film. For example if not for them films like My Cousin Vinny would be a passing comedy as apose to a classic. Just being nominated by these people will raise Transformers from a popcorn summer action flick to something that a wider audience will keep an eye on and take more seriously.
What I don't agree with you on though is saying this is about ego, and denouncing people who are fans for being intrested in nothing more than an award...
Yes this movie could have been done better, but a win would be a win for Transformers as a whole, and although win or loose it wouldn't change anything for me, it would be nice to see something other than my cluttered shelves show the world just how great this franchise is, and that it's not just some run of the mill cartoony crap!
A year ago Transformers as a whole was either a memory or joke for most people. This here is just proving that this realy something great and worthy of merit, not just a flash in the pan.

You know what the worst part is, now Alex Kingdom doesn't have to eat his own collection!
Still, a year ago, nobody, including most of us here even thought we'd make the running. Looking at the odds, we still did pretty dam good.
Kinda like the end of Rocky or The Bad News Bears

It was nominated he should at least have to chew on them or something.

The Oscar for Best Visual Effects goes to...
Posted by ricardimusprime85 Sun Feb 24, 2008 10:05 pm
I have seen the Transformers Movie many times, and the people at ILM (Industrial Light and Magic) worked extremely hard to bring our favorite robots to life. Compare the extensive details and complex transformations to the robots with the crappy, old-style renderings to that weird .... (sorry I can not curse) of the Golden Compass. The Academy voted for the wrong film, and I am pissed!!!
Still I am glad that the Transformers Movie won the VES Awards.

Golden Compass my ass. Scott Farrar and his team deserved that award more than a bunch a guys who CG'd a big polar bear - whoopity-doo.

How in the hollow halls of hell could Transformers lose to Golden Compass?
It just blows my mind.

Still a year ago no one ever thought we'd get this far!
I take solace in knowing that unlike nearly every other sci-fi action movie ever, Transformers was recognised for how great it truely is as a whole!

Popcorn movies are movies that are created only for pure entertainment/commercial purposes and generally do not mentally challenge an audience. Non artsy films, if you will.
Action films or the majority of films played in theaters are generally an example of popcorn films. Transformers, Die Hard, American Pie, etc.
Non popcorn movies include films like Schindler's List, There Will Be Blood, or movies that are generally up for Best Picture at the Oscars.

Transformers.

Yeeeeeaaaahhhhh... Are they even comparable? One is done in a completely CGI environment for a good part of the movie, while the other is composited into real filmed shots in the other.
That award certainly didn't go to the movie which made the most technical advancements in CGI, that's for sure.

Lots of great films get missed at the Oscars, and lots of lousy films get awards.
The long and short of it is that Transformers got nominated for the few categories it might have actually achieved some level of respectability in:
-shiny effects
-changing camera angles
-and loud noises
But in the end, it still lost to Matt Damon and a Talking Polar Bear.
Nuff said.

Eradicator wrote:But aren't all movies for entertainment?
Depends on the type of entertainment that is presented, and there are various kinds. Popcorn movies are just another type. Case in point, Schindler's List and Transformers are clearly two different types of entertainment movies. There are also many types of creators that would argue that their movies are NOT to entertain an audience, but to educate or make a statement.
Guys, visual effects go beyond "stupid CGI polar bears". There are various elements that go into visual effect like backgrounds, integration with live actors, live action effects, digital effects, etc. Giant fighting robots do kick ass, but Golden Compass had to create an entirely whole new foreign world. Both films did a great job creating visual effects, but only one can win.
As a fan it sucks that Transformers lost, but I think a lot of you are blinded by your fandom and your crass comments show that.

Yeah, but at the end of the day it grossed close to a billion dollars. No matter what way you try to tear this film down (and let's face it, it's your only reason for posting here), you can NEVER deny it's financial success.
And to me, that's a better indicator than how many golden statues it collects. To me, movies are more about entertaining and I think it's fairly obvious from the box office takings, that it did a damn good job of that.

The Oscars is a good indicator of The Best/Outstanding in the fields of the movie artform. Movies can do more than just entertain and, quite frankly, the best movies SHOULD do more then just present mind-numbing entertainment.
Box Office tallies give the best indication of the winners in entertainment, or at least what the mass majority of people want to see And let's be honest, some of the #1 movies at the box office are horrible, at least in terms of a viewers view point.

After DVD sales and rentals, Transformers did almost 800 million dollars. I'm happy knowing that it blew most other blockbusters from 2007 out of the water. I'm also happy knowing that it was better than the ones it didn't beat out. Spider-Man 3 only got #1 because of the last two. I know I'm not the only one that felt screwed over after watching that one.

Won't disagree with that.
What I find odd though, I realise the Academy Awards are American based yet are pretty much used as a world gauge but a number of movies nominated each year barely get a mention in Australia.
The Bucket List was nominated wasn't it? Only opened here last week. I guess that's why I find it hard to follow the Oscars because a good chunk of the movies nominated are barely heard of over here.
