They were certainly needed after the absolute disaster of The Last Knight, that movie and the sub-par sales of their toy line damaged the whole franchise and we needed a major reboot to the franchise.
Why do you think the Aligned continuity is finished? Or why the IDW comics are getting rebooted besides the comics own problems? Or why this film is looking like it's going to be a reboot with a whole new look and direction?
I am a major Bayformers guy and will always think the films get a little too much flak (But do deserve most of the criticisms they get) but they should have stopped with DOTM and AOE and TLK should have never existed, AOE Crosshairs is in my top 5 Autobots and Nitro Zeus is my favorite Decepticon in the whole franchise and there is plenty about the later sequels I liked but I still think we would have been better off without the sequels.
And you know what? Besides it not bringing that much new things to the franchise as for lore and such the Bumblebee film is a much better produced film then the Bay films ever could be with the possibly exception of the first film and maybe a big chunk of DOTM depending on what your looking for and even then I think 95 percent of the film is well crafted as opposed to the 70-60 percent that 1 and 3 were.
I find it funny people keep on whining about all the "G1 reboots" despite the fact that there hasn't even been a proper "reboot" since the original G1 era, the closest things that come close to that is Cyberverse, Animated and the IDW comics and the only things they really share with G1 is the designs of the robots.
We have had about 10 non stop years of the Bay films and their aesthetic across other parts of the franchise which is much longer and much more then G1 had back in the day.
It's time for the franchise to move on and get the audience back but it can't do that unless they start with things familiar and beloved which so happens to be G1 inspired things.
Also wow how very selfish and more importantly disrespectful of you, what makes you the judge for what should or what should not be part of the movies or what should be made into toys, what about the people who do want those things?

I'll say that while Bay is a great guy and he does have passion for the first 3 or so movies (Don't convince me there was any passion or major effort for AOE or TLK) Travis has this love for the franchise and the original source material that Bay never quite had, and this film had a lot of love and effort put into it and it shows.
That's the reason it's doing so good with critics, that's the reason most people praise this film unlike the Bay films, so dissing Knight like that is a major insult.
Look it's fine to not like the toy or the movie or the G1 direction the franchise is going but insulting these things straight up and saying "They shouldn't exist" is just wrong.
